  3. Great stuff, I really enjoyed watching the video and looking at the 500px. A few questions if you don't mind? 1) what lenses did you use? 2) did you do much editing to the video beyond combining segments? 3) how did you execute the panning? Any special gear beyond a tripod? 4) did you shoot in 4K, 1080p etc? 5) do you notice any stuttering or distortion when viewed locally? I was streaming on to an Apple TV (looks great on the big screen!) and noticed a few flickers etc but thought it was probably wifi vs camera? Sorry to ask so many questions but the idea of shooting a bit of video really fascinates me and would be one of the main reasons to upgrade my XT1.
  4. Ha ha my colleague was about to make the same mistake (buying a 50mm) and just so happened to be sitting there and stopped him. I was surprised though how hard it is to find decent, own brand Nikon lenses at a sensible price with sensible equivalent on DX. He was understandably so confused! All made doubly hard to explain whilst I pretended to not know much about cameras, as I'd prefer not to share my photography interests with the entire office!
  5. Impressive stuff. Images have a raw honesty about them which is perfect for what you've captured.
  6. A couple of weeks back, I was lucky enough to spend 10 days in Morocco on holiday with my wife. Whilst we covered three destinations (Marakesh, the Atlas Mountains and Essaouria) it was mainly in Essaouira where I had some free time to wonder and take some shots. Having spent some time before hand debating kit selection with forum members I decided to take just an XT1 with either 14mm, 35mm (F1.4) or 56mm. It wasn't a photography holiday so I didn't go crazy but I had a couple of afternoon's to shoot so grabbed what I could! Essaouria's famous fishing boats (taken with 56mm): DSCF0600.jpg by naddan28, on Flickr Boats by naddan28, on Flickr Essaouira has famous small blue fishing boats which are in the habour. Apparently they are painted blue as the fisherman believed it wouldn't scare away the fish. Thanks for reading such a long post. I really would recommend Morroco (and Essaouira in particular) as a destination to go, its a wonderful place. As for the photos, feel free to share your thoughts and critique!
  7. It's interesting the lack of DX lenses is something I was trying to explain to a work colleague who'd just brought D5500 used and was trying to buy lenses for his holiday and first ever "proper" camera.
  8. I'm lucky enough to own two lens kits a prime setup (14, 35 & 56) and zoom setup (16-55 & 50-140). My personal experiences when travelling are essentially as follows... When travelling with my wife and being touristy the 16-55mm is perfect. Yes it's a bit heavy, but the IQ is great and the range means I don't need to take any other lenses or worry about changing lenses. It's WR sealed too which is a bonus. I used this virtually exclusively (little bit of 50-140mm but we'll get to that) on a trip to San Fran and Yosemite and another trip to Amsterdam. The 50-140mm, whilst it's a great lens i find it a bit heavy and normally lives in a hotel safe and is used for specific locations, often for shooting Panos. When I've got more time and have time to shoot on my own, the light prime set up in a Billingham bag works great. I used this set up in Rome and recently in Morocco and didn't miss the zooms to much, apart from when taking a tour in Marrakesh which meant I was limited on lens change opportunities and therefore lost some shots. The one lens I'm tempted to get, which would really add to a travel kit i think is the 90mm f2. I've used it a bit and really enjoyed it and as a stand in for the 50-140mm would be great for travel. I think a 16-55mm & 90mm would be a super versatile travel kit for everything apart from treks. For treks, you'd want to throw in the 50-140mm instead in my opinion, and maybe the 100-400mm if it's wildlife images you're after.
  9. I don't think so, marketed as a high end (dare I say "pro") camera with weather sealing I don't think a bit of a splash is acceptable in terms of WR.
  10. Nice set. I particularly like the painter and last image.
  11. Wow. What exactly do you do as a "forensic photographer"? I thought it was maybe CSC style shots of crime scenes etc but then saw you were carrying mics and didn't have a macro lens, plus carried bins so I was intrigued!
  12. It's eye catching, and great light but something isn't doing it for me. I think it's the excessive frame being given to the sky with the line going at 1/2 way. I'd like to have seen a bit more landscape, a little less sky. Great stuff though, made me want to go out and shoot some landscapes!
  13. Long time mac user here too (iMac & iPad), I understand some people's frustration at this but I wonder if it's being blown out of proportion a little. Removing the SD card is frustrating but otherwise what else are people using that in say 2yrs time (i.e. When you're making the upgrade) won't either be USB C or wireless? NB I completely sympathise that TODAY the adapters are going to be a necessary evil. Personally I'm hoping a large iMac and iPad will continue to meet my editing needs and adobe will step up their game. A decent MacBook plus screen is pretty expensive vs an iMac.
  14. Welcome to the forum. I'm a fellow U.K. Shooter (Surrey), where abouts are you?
  15. Glad I'm not the only one! If you think the 56mm is slow try the original 35mm in CAF! In some ways I don't get why the 56mm and 23mm were not made with WR to start with...
  16. Hi All, I've spent the past week or so on holiday in Morocco and decided to take a lightweight prime setup (56mm, 35mm f1.4 & 14mm) and over the course of today in particular, the AF in these lenses is really showing its age, when compared to my 16-55mm. Don't get me wrong, I love the lenses and they're great but with the leap forward we've seen in AF from the latest bodies plus the into of WR in the cheaper f2 lenses, it got me thinking these lenses need a reboot or new premium lenses launched aside them. It seems illogical that the more expensive, exotic glass should be less versatile than the cheaper, slower lenses. What do others think?
  17. Great documentary shots.
  18. Thanks both. Shooting primes wide open and trying to be descrete in Morocco made the e-shutter helpful. I decided to shoot in burst to help counteract the issue (normally not a "sprayer"!) so I'm confident I'll have captured a few frames distortion feee of each subject. XT1 froze a bit too and the 35mm f1.4 really cannot do CAF tracking!
  19. Hi All, I wondered any XT2 users had noticed an improvement in rolling shutter in the XT2? I've just been out shooting some street and tried ES on my XT1 and had a fair amount of shots ruined by rolling shutter. I don't think it was helped by camera movement being caused by strong seaside breezes and motion in the scene but even so, I was disappointed in the number of distorted shots from my XT1. Thanks in advance.
  20. If you're happy with the 18-55mm and only want the 16-55mm for this trip then I'd say either rent it or skip it. If you're worried about WR then why not consider the new 23mm f2? Much cheaper, faster and an intro to primes, assuming the 18-55mm is your only lens?
  21. If you own both I'd take the 16-55mm, more flexibility can't hurt.
  22. Biggest thing for me is to ensure it takes filters. I.e. No huge bulbous front element that stops the usage of CPLs and other filters. I wasn't sure I'd be in the market for this but I could see it replacing my 14mm and potentially 16-55mm too.
  23. Welcome to the forums and congrats on your new hobby. I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say none. If you've only just picked up your kit and completely new to photography then I'd say hold off buying a lens for at least three months. My reasoning is: - you'll be so new and excited, you don't/won't know what you want to shoot yet (travel, portraits, landscapes etc) working this out will help pick the "right" focal length. When I started out I shot sport and nature loads, can't think of the last time I shot anything sporty! - you might hate photography or the Fuji system (unlikely but we're all biased here!) so why sink more cash in so early and when your still learning? - you might find the funds better spent elsewhere e.g. Tripod, filters, bags, lessons, software the list goes on. Photography is not cheap, but the good news is xmas is around the corner! Not trying to be difficult, just suggesting some alternatives.
  24. I've not had a bad Fuji lens experience apart from finding the x100s lens a bit to soft for my taste when wide open.
  25. Thanks for the advice, I'm leaning more and more to a prime kit. I'm really looking forward to it!
