To me I like to "spread the wealth". Having large 128GB cards, even 64G is too many eggs in one basket. In my gear I have a split of 32G and 16G SD cards. I can take a total of 8,943 images shooting JPEG + Raw. If I lose a card, or it's somehow damaged, or the camera is stolen, I only lose either 891, or 480 (approx) images on the card depending if they were 32 or 16G. Also, Once the card is full and back in my card wallet the card wallet is NO LONGER KEPT with the cameras. The card wallet is on my person wherever I go, at anytime. If the camera gear is stolen, I still have my images. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I have looked at the 10-24 and I love the "wideness" of it, but I am in LOVE with my 16 1.4, It's sharp, clean, and I can use it as a mini-macro lens. It's my second "don't leave home without it" right behind my 18-55 lens. Even though the 10-24 is fabulous, I don't want to carry the bulk or the weight; this is the reason I've also decided to stick with the 55-200 vs the 50-140 2.8

Fujifilm XF 55-200mm F/3.5-F/4.8 or XC 55-230mm F/4.5-F/6.7?
jlmphotos replied to Velvia's topic in General Discussion
Disagree. The advantages in my view are many. Light weight. Much less expensive. Easy to carry. So what if the aperture is a bit on the slow side? That has never, ever hindered me. The lens is ultra sharp -- never had a problem. The only drawback that bothers me is the "are you happy to see me" extension when racked out to 200. If you get what I mean. LOL. After shooting with Nikon gear for years, including the famous 70-200 2.8 VR, I would not, EVER, go back to carrying the loads i carried back in the day. -
CONGRATULATIONS! You'll have to post an unbiased review for us! I'm primarily concerned with image quality compared to the X-T1. That's it.

Fujifilm XF 55-200mm F/3.5-F/4.8 or XC 55-230mm F/4.5-F/6.7?
jlmphotos replied to Velvia's topic in General Discussion
I've never used the XC series, but I can definitely attest to the GREATNESS of the 55-200 lens. It's my go-to for long(er) shots. I prefer the 55-200 over the 50-140 due to it's size, weight, and a somewhat longer reach. If you can afford it, go for the 55-200 -
Use our Fujis as workhorse tools or keep them pristine?

Use our Fujis as workhorse tools or keep them pristine?
jlmphotos replied to LeFey's topic in General Discussion
OH MY GOODNESS I love this topic. My two cents: Don't throw it around, but use the darn thing. If it gets dinged up, so what? As I've mentioned in other posts throughout when I'm done with cameras they become paperweights. I still own my 1978 Minolta X-E7. If you saw it, you would swear it doesn't work; but it does! It has traveled from the northern slopes of Alaska, to the Florida tropics and everywhere in between! I don't abuse gear, but I'll be damned if I'm going to baby it. All this bullshit of WR and non-WR lenses to me is just that. BS. If a lens can't get wet, screw it -- move on. As I've said before: Back in the day, there were no WR lenses. We used what we got. Period. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! -
I kept losing the little round sync cover on my X-T1. I finally got fed up with replacing the darn thing and took a little bit of Sugaru (I think it's called) and filled the darn thing in. No more problems. As far as keeping a cover on the flash hotshoe I bough literally a bag of like 15 small, rubber, tight fitting levels and slip these into my hotshoe on the X-T1. I think the bag of levels cost me under $9.00US. They are cheap, and fit very snugly so I know zero moisture will get in there. But oh that darn sync cover... Sealed that puppy right up as it's something I will never use. I'm sure some of you are wondering: What about when you go to sell the camera? Um. I pretty much use up cameras to the point they become paperweights. So once I'm finished with the bodies, they go into a glass display case I have at one of my homes and they stay locked up in there. No one will want to buy my used crap -- even though I do keep my gear in excellent mechanical working order the outside looks like sh*t.

I keep one or two bags. Yes, it could be somewhat cumbersome depending on the size of bag. For example the largest of the ziplock holds my D800e, with the Powergrip, and my 50mm lens and barely zips up. But it does. The smaller sandwich size holds my Fuji lenses -- no problems.. I only use the ziplocks when I know I'll be entering and exiting hot/humid to cold and vice-versa. I am not patient enough to do this all the time. I am also not afraid to swap lenses in ANY weather short of a monsoon, or a raging sandstorm. I've changed lenses pretty much everywhere and other than some dirt or dust on a sensor here and there it has not been much of an issue including dropping my D700 and 24-70 on a sandy beach in Puerto Rico while shooting a wedding there. This coming from the guy that dropped a Minolta SR-T101 in a shallow lake while photographing beavers in Alaska. Lens was destroyed but the camera: I pre-heated my oven to 200-250 degrees and placed the camera in for 20-30 seconds then out for a few minutes Did this for a while and the camera still worked when I sold it to my sister in 2004. Albeit dirty viewfinder and all.

I have to say once again that we make too much of the weather sealing on these and other brands. back in the day, I shot Minolta glass from up in the Alaska Pipeline camps north of Fairbanks, Alaska to the humid, tropical weather in the Dry Tortugas. ZERO problems with camera or lenses. Same with my X-E1 and X-T1. I've had no issues in and around saltwater, sand, cold, heat, rain, drizzle, ice. I will say if my lens(es) gave me any difficulties in hot or humid places the manufacturer of said lens(es) would have to deal with one irate consumer.

Oh sorry to hear about your dad! Hope he recovers soon.

I wouldn't worry about it. Most likely you'll move on to another body long before you need a new shutter mechanism

That 35mm f1.4 magic in other Fujinon lenses?
jlmphotos replied to petergabriel's topic in Fuji X Lenses
My 35 1.4 goes back to my initial purchase of my X-E1 bundled with the 18-55 in February 2013. I still love my 35mm! You are correct that it just renders images just so. I still prefer to use it when I can instead of my other lenses. -
I used my old(er) Minolta glass on my Fuji X-E1, and X-T1 for a while for fun. I had the Minolta-Rokkor 58mm 1.4, a 16mm 2.8 Fisheye, and some others. They worked very well in manual focus, were sharp and clear. I bought the adapter for less than $20.00 US on Amazon. The sales guy was out of line. I wouldn't go back there and if I did I'd make sure the owner knew. There are too few camera stores less that don't need a black eye from disgruntled and angry customers that have to deal with individuals such as this. And some wonder why many of us shop online...

The 18-55 is an excellent choice! That is my "don't leave home without it lens". My next would be not he 12 2.8 which I also own, but the 16 1.4 That's my second "don't leave home..." lens. Those two travel with me wherever the X-T1 goes. The lens is wide, and also as a make-do macro lens. Check out my links in the signature as I have some 16mm images linked there. Also, the macro image of the hermit crab was at F5 for a bit more depth. Someone commented the bokeh was a bit too busy for them. I'm ok with it. Hope that helps!

Short answer is NO difference. I've printed 30 x 20 with a 6mp camera. Also, keep in mind the sensor size from 16mp to 24mp is incremental at best. the dimensions are measured not across the entire surface of a sensor, but only on the long side. I've done up to 30 x 20 from my Fuji X-T1 as well and the amazing 16 1.4 and it is amazing. I'm by no means self-promoting myself here but on my blog ( in my signature) has a post on the print size thing. Hope that helps.

I don't think NR is your problem. Are you using the rear LCD constantly? How long before camera goes to sleep mode? Do you leave it on all the time? If you are wearing the camera on a strap, and the camera is ON, and you have the eyepiece set to show on the rear LCD when the camera is not to your eye, then the LCD is basically on ALL the time. I've caught myself doing that a few times, and that will definitely wear the battery down quickly. You may want to check all your options. I honestly don't believe it's NR causing this. I have NR on all the time, and I get 250-300 images per battery easy. But I don't use the rear LCD, nor do I chimp each image either.

PU leather or genuine leather?
jlmphotos replied to johant's topic in Bags, Half Cases & Straps for Fuji X
I don't know I must have a bug up my a$$ about bags and cases. I don't understand why you would want to add more bulk, and weight to a "tool". I just don't get it... But it must be just me. -
Pro1 a bit of buyers remorse...

Hear! Hear! Some examples. And you may want to double-check your settings (?) -
Simple solution which I use ALL THE TIME: I keep large Zip-lock bags on every trip i make. When I'm going in to a cool car, or room, or exiting an A/C'd car or hotel room, I place the camera and lens(es) in zip lock bags. Presto: zero condensation/fogging I've used the non-WR lenses in freezing rain, snow, and literally had them covered in wet sand and salt water (from my wet and sandy hands) and to this day, no problems. Maybe many of you guys are new to photography, but back in the day, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I used Minolta cameras and glass and shot, a lot, in Alaska (where I lived) I never, ever had a lens or body damaged by snow, ice, sleet, fog, or cold. Ever. As a matter of fact, less than a year ago I sold all my Minolta glass on fleabay and it was still all perfect and I'm not a person to baby equipment. To me, they are just tools, like a car mechanic uses his/her wrenches. Nothing else.

I think there is way too much emphasis placed on the WR of lenses. I have used "regular" non WR lenses for 40+years of photography from the Alaskan north, to the tropics, and have never, ever had any issues with ANY lens. Last september I spent 10 days shooting in, literally in tropical, humid, 90+ degree weather, including in the water with my X-T1, and the 18-55, Zeiss 12, 16 1.4 (yes, WR) and I had no issues with any of the equipment other than some minor sand-related stuff getting underneath the X-T1 on/off switch that made turning the camera on and off a two finger operation. I have no rubber peeling, no distorted doors, nothing to this point and I'm well over 100,000 images (I would guess) with my X-T1. The WR means absolutely nothing to me. I have found ALL lenses to be extremely resilient when it comes to weather resistance as long as some common sense is exercised.

As I'm planning a trip to Cuba for a couple of weeks I'll tell you what I'm taking: X-T1, Zeiss 12mm, Fuji 16 1.4, 18-55 (tack sharp, and light) and "maybe" my 23 1.4 Enough SD cards for about 9000 Raw+Jpegs Seven (7) batteries my 77mm filters and appropriate step-up rings for each lens. And in checked baggage: chargers, etc. No laptop, maybe, just maybe my iPad to send images home and post where wi-fi exists. That's it. I'm leaving my 55-200, and my 35 1.4 at home. I think with the above combo, I've got it all covered rather nicely. Heck, I might even leave the 12mm as the 16 1.4 is such an amazing lens....

A lot of complaining going on here...
jlmphotos replied to PhotoDan's topic in Fuji X-Pro 1 / Fuji X-Pro 2 / Fuji X-Pro 3
I'm very glad it's your last post. I was going to suggest to admin they ban your butt from here. We, all of us, accept that not every camera is perfect, that Fuji, like any other company will have it's issues. But, ultimately, it was YOUR DECISION to purchase and use the Fuji camera system; not ours. So, please, do us all a favor and go back whence you came from. Seriously: Go buy a Sony and please visit THEIR forums. ADMIN: Please consider banning this guy.
