My brand new X-T4 freeze now and then - anyone else same problem?

Hi,

I have a brand new X-T4. I have only used if for 2 days. Photo quality is OK in my opinion (at least some photos, some is very bad quality). But now and then my X-T4 has just freeze and it do not respond to any user input. Only way I have found to get out of it is to take out the battery and then turn on the camera again. Then all works fine again.
When I got the camera and lens (Fujinon XF16-80 mm F4 R OIS WR) I upgraded the camera to latest firmware (ver. 1.02) and the lens as well (ver. 1.05) before I started to use it.
I use two SD memory cards in the camera, Sony SF-G64T (UHS-II, V90) 64 GB (one such card in each memory slot).
I have a battery grip VG-XT4 with two NP-235W batteries but I have not mounted it on the camera and used it yet.

Anyone experience same problem that I have with my brand new camera?
I suspect the firmware but that is just a guess.

regards,
Bo (Sweden)

You and I know that this is a similar comment/question to the one I asked and to which you replied.  I hope that adding another question will help someone with information find the questions and respond.  My issue is that my X-T4 "freezes" when turned on ever since I updated to v1.02 firmware.  The LCD is live but everything else is frozen and unresponsive.  After about 10 seconds the EVF and the buttons resume normal function.  I have used X-T1, X-T2, X-T3 and never had a problem updating firmware on any of them.  I always use an SD card for the updates.

I would really like someone at Fuji to acknowledge that the update has problems and let us know if there is a remedy in the making.  If I can't get some information soon I will be returning the camera and falling back to my trusted X-T3.

I was out some hours today Sunday July 12, 2020, the third day using my brand new X-T4. It frooze again after maybe an hour usage. I took out the battery and inserted it again and then it worked fine for the rest of the day. Out of 3 days usage it has froozen at least one time each day (some day several times) when using my X-T4. That is rather easily repetable in my humble opinion.

Hi,

I have now e-mailed "Fujifilm Nordic" support with basically same info I have written here.
It was not possible to phone them that I tried first, only e-mail is accepted.
So now I will have a support "case" with Fujifilm in Sweden.
If I get any answer and how the problem with my X-T-4 is solved I will post again here so You know.

I have today got an answer from Fujifilm Nordic support (Swedish).
They tell me to send back the camera and request a new on warranty from the reseller Scandinavian Photo.
I asked them if I should try downgrade the X-T4 firmware from 1.02 to 1.01 but they adviced not to do that because it could damage the camera. So I will not do that.
I have replied and asked if they have checked with Fujufilm centrally (in Japan) if they have any reports of similar freeze problem I have with my X-T4 camera.
I have also asked if I should ask the reseller to install the latest firmware 1.02 in the camera before they send a new to me (if I claim a new on warranty), just to avoiid any discussion me as user has screwed up the camera with the 1.02 firmware upgrade. I'm waiting for answer on that question now. I also said to them, maybe it is a problem with firmware 1.02 and then even a new camera will behave similar with freeze maybe if it has 1.02 installed. I'm waiting for answer on that though question also from Fujifilm support.

July 14th I got my new X-T4, I did also install firmware 1.02 (after unboxing) AND yes it also freezes from time to time. So far i just need to switch off then on for normal recovery. I have used my camera very little, i hope is only due to Firmware. Apologies I can’t add further insights. Will be following this forum. Cheers

Franky, can You check under the hatch for the SD card(s) if Your X-T4 is made in China or made in Japan? See photo below. Mine is made in China, and my X-T4 is just 6 days old (since I bought it brand new from the largest photo online shop here in my country). Sorry to hear that it is a freeze problem with your brand new X-T4 also.
I do not know how common it is for users to upgrade firmware in a camera like this, but it is sure easy and when one look at the new features (and fixes,  but Fujifilm do not tell what is fixed) I see no reason not to install firmware 1.02 in the X-T4 camera. It is so easy to make a firmware upgrade also and it was no problem at all to make the upgrade.
I have asked Fujifilm in my country if they think it is a firmware problem and I have also asked them to read this forum about X-T4 to see that it is more people that has freeze problem with X-T4 after upgrade to firmware 1.02. The answer I got  was:
"This is certainly nothing that should happen with this camera and I recommend You to contact the reseller to get it exchanged to another that works better."

I replied to them and asked if I should downgrade to firmware 1.01 but they said not to do that since it can damage the camera.
I also asked if they had checked with Fujifilm centrally (I was thinking Japan then) if  they had reports others had freeze problem with X-T4 with firmware 1.02 but they have not answered that and I do not expect answer on that. They have told me to get a new camera on warranty so I think that tells me what I need to know. But I asked them also if I should ask the reseller to install the 1.02 firmware for me but that has Fujifil support so far not answered. I also asked if I get a new camera and have the firmware 1.02 installed and same problem with freeze happen - what then? (one really suspect the 1.02 firmware in this case).

Is it any people out there with firmware 1.02 installed in a Fujifilm X-T4 camera that all is working fine with (no frreze or any other similar problem)?

I also want to add that when I yesterday was out to take some photos with my X-T4 the LCD suddenly was not working at all when I turned on the camera, only through the view finder I was able to see what I took photos of. The buttons worked fine but LCD dead. Later when I came home I put the camera on a table and let it sit for maybe an hour and then I turned the camera On, and then the LCD lit up as it should.
Another funny "Murphys law" happened when I was out in the woods with my X-T4 camera yesterday, when I was walking back to my car and walked on a small forest road I see a Badger on the road and I turned On the X-T4 camera to take a photo but nothing happed, the buttons had frooze...

I have now contacted the reseller Scandinavian Photo and I selected to use my consumer right to just return the camera and lens, and then get a another brand new X-T4 and lens (as a package, as I originally bought it first time) from them. That way I avoid any discussion on a warranty situation. The person at Scandinavian Photo was very friendly and said that will be fine do so so.
I want to give Fujifilm a second chance, but if same problem with the new X-T4 camera I will get next week I will have to switch to another brand since then my patience will be gone with a Fujifilm camera. I asked Scandinavis Photo if I could return everything then (also the accessories I bought like two chargers, two batteries, one hand grip, etc) and buy another brand of similar camera and they said that I could do that.
I hope my X-T 4 was just a "lemon" and a very rare defect camera that left the Fujifilm factory in China.

I also want to tell you this, that I received from Fujifilm Nordic support today July 16 2020:
"Of course it should not be any freeze and I have talked to one of our product specialists regarding this. It has nothing to do with the firmware, it seems to be a problem with the camera."

Hi. Mine was also manufactured in China... do they also manufactur from Japan? Should I get concerned??

Franky,
If production procedure and quality control is same in China as in  Japan I suppose it should not matter that it say Made in China on Your X-T4. But personally I would have prefered an X-T4 made in Japan for varios reasons. I have a new X-T4 including new lens incoming from the reseller next week since Fujifilm Nordic support told me to send my X-T 4 back (so many problem with my brand new camera during the 6 days I used it every day, took hunders of photos with it during that time). I had firmware 1.02 in my X-T4 camera and firmware 1.05 in my lens (Fujinon XF16-80 mm F4 R OIS WR). It is easy to see what firmware is installed in camera and lens. Just check on Fujifilm homepage.
Remember if you update firmware You must know this:

"FUJI EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMS ANY WARRANTY FOR SOFTWARE. SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED..."

It is written so on X-T4 firmware download page on Fujifilm homepage.

To check the current firmware version:
Turn off the camera.
Turn the camera on while pressing “DISP/BACK” button to check the current firmware version.

I sent my X-T4 camera and lens XF 16-80 mm F4 R OIS WR back yesterday, as advised by Fujifilm Nordic support, and I will get a brand new X-T4 and new same lens next week from the reseller (I have talked with them on the phone), I hope it will work better this time.

I have got a brand new X-T4 camera and lens XF 16-80 mm F4 R OIS WR now. I have upgraded camera to latest firmware (it had 1.01) so it has version 1.03 now in camera, and lens had firmware 1.04 so I upgraded that to version 1.05 that is the latest firmware version for this lens I have.
So far the camera behave fine (no freeze). I will take some photos later today of weahter permit (rain is hanging in the air now).
Hat off to Scandinavian Photo (largest photo reseller in Sweden and one of the largest in the Nordic countries) that handled this problem with my X-T4 so great. I hope my new X-T4 behave normal now. Two "lemon" X-T4 in a row is very unlikely.

Hi there,

I have the same (or similar) issue here, camera freezing every now and then and the only solution seems to be to remove the battery.

To me it looks like an AF issue and it even seems that it was introduced with one of the FW upgrades 1.02 or 1.03. The error occurs extremely often when I use a remote trigger instead of the shutter button. When taking a picture the camera starts focussing (which by the way takes incredibly long now with the XF 16-55). Then suddenly it stops and the camera behaves like doing a long-time exposure (LED screen turning black, orange status LED on). There are two alternatives to solve this: either remove the batteries (power switch won't turn off the camera) or wait. After a minute or so the lense makes some focussing noises and the camera "comes back". Hate to say this but it seems that Fujifilm's production standards seem to have reached an all-time low...

junOlive,
So did Your X-T4 behave normal before the camera firmware 1.02 or 1.03 was installed?
Do You have latest firmware installed for the Fujifilm lens You use?
I suggest You e-mail Fujifilm support with a detailed description so if it is a firmware problem they can perhaps fix it in a newer firmware version sometime in the future?

I purchased an X-T4 about two months ago.  After I configured it to my liking it froze a couple of times.  By freezing I mean that no controls/buttons would function and the EVF and LCD were also frozen.   I could only get it to work by removing the battery and then turning it back on.  That would solve the matter.  I started changing one setting at a time to see if I could determine if any settings were causing the problem.  I have no idea if it is a coincidence or it has solved the problem, but once I set all my film simulations’ “Clarity” settings back to zero, I’ve not had another incidence of the camera freezing.  That was three weeks ago and I’ve used the camera several times.  Clarity may have nothing to do with the freezing, but as of this writing, it has functioned properly every time.  By the way, I do have the latest firmware loaded.

Hi bem,

Yes all firmwares are up to date. I strongly suspect firmware 1.03 as the culprid because I haven't had such problems in studio shootings with the X-T4 before. When I tried last time it were about 3-5 shots before the camera froze - repeatedly. Maybe its also worth having a look at temperatures...

I'll contact Fuji FPS and will report here when they tell me anything substantial.

When I asked Fijifilm support in my country about the possibility to downgrade to an earlier firmware version for the X-T4 they adviced me against it, they claimed the camera could be damaged. So it seems You are stuck with firmware 1.03 for now, if you want follow the answer Fujfilm support gave me.  I suppose it is bugs here and there in all camera firmware, at least one can read sometimes in the release notes for Fujifilm camera like X-T4 "Fix of minor bugs". Personally I would like to know what the minor (and probably some times major) bugs are before I install a new firmware.

hi guys, i'm emi from italy. I'm searching for a solution to the same problem i've read here.

My brand new xt4 sometimes freeze. I shoot video, and as you know, if this happen during an event, it's the death.

Even if i'm in still or movie, i have this problem random

3 days ago, i had 3 times in 1 hour.

I use last firmware, 1.03, sandisk 170mb 64 gb. Fringer adaptor with latest firmware and sigma lens for canon 18.35.

I hope it's only a firmware problem, i don't wanna think i have to ship the camera for an rma.

I upload a video to this problem. I hope we can find a solution very soon.

Same situation with my new X-T4.

The camera freezes occasionally - sometimes when switching something on it (e.g. from Movie to Photo Mode or back), sometimes after taking a photo and sometimes it won't wake up again after going into Sleep Mode...
The one and only solution to get my X-T4 working again is to take out the battery and put it in again.

I tried several SD cards - from old ones to brand new UHS-II U3 with V90 standards...nothing changed.
And when I switch between the XF 16-80mm 4.0 lens and the 23mm 2.0 - nothing changes at all.
And yes - I got the latest firmware installed on the X-T4 and on the lenses.

Sadly it is not possible to reproduce the error - it occurs randomly.

Never had such issues with any other cam I owned...not matter if Nikon, Canon, Panasonic or Olympus.
I am really disappointed 😞

The response I received from Fuji support was that it very much looks like problems caused by a defective SD card (which I'd personally rather rule out given these Lexar 2000x cards work fantastically in an X-T3).

However, I found an interesting post on Facebook where someone reported exactly the same behavior I had observed with my X-T4. In the reported case Fuji support narrowed the cause down to the Godox X2T-F wireless flash transmitter that was mounted to the X-T4.

Though not really having tested other scenarios yet, interestingly enough I've been using the same trigger when having the described problems. So maybe its a hot shoe thing. The trigger itself seems to work fine on other Fuji cameras. Has anyone of you guys had mounted something on the hot shoe while experiencing these freezes?

All X-T4 cameras we buy in Europe are made in China. Fuji only delivers 'made in Japan' X-T4s to the USA to bypass the high trade tariffs imposed on Chinese products. In fact, I've been told (but I'm not certain about it) that these cameras are also mostly made in China, but then shipped to Japan for some final assembly and packaging. Just enough to qualify for the 'made in Japan' stamp. Today, only the X-Pro, X-H1 (until a few months ago) and the GFX are actually build in Japan.

As for the SD card issues, that is a recurrent issue with Fuji cameras. The X-H1 had real issues (incl. lost images) and we've seen multiple reports of X-T2s, X-T3s and X-Pro3s having issues. Most of them are solved in firmware updates (the notorious 'various other bugs') but for the X-H1 I've experienced continuous problems up to date (albeit less than when the camera was first released).

Best advise is to stick to the brand and type of SD cards that Fuji recommends and hope for firmware updates. In case the camera frequently freezes, I would always ask for a replacement.

    • Will Fujifilm Ever Fix the Tethering Lockout Issue on the GFX 100S? I've been a commercial photographer for 15 years and an early GFX system adopter, starting with the GFX 50S and now using the GFX 100S as my main camera. I work on-site with clients, and they stand behind my laptop with live view open, making adjustments to the scene. At the same time, I need to be adjusting exposure and testing flash levels from behind the camera. The current system forces me to choose between live view or controlling my camera. Once live view is open, the camera is completely locked out. My clients take priority, but that means I can't change exposure settings or test flash levels while live view is running. The only option is to pull out the cable, which cuts off live view for my clients. I also can't trigger the shutter with live view open, so I have to completely stop live view just to set my flash exposures. I've been waiting for YEARS for this to be fixed, and I’m starting to lose hope. Capture One 16 now has dual control for other Fujifilm models (like the X-H2, X-T5, and GFX-100II), allowing control from both the software and the camera. But why is this only available for the GFX-100II? It's frustrating to see this implemented for a new $7500 camera while this long-standing issue on older models remains ignored. I am heavily invested in GFX, and the 100S with a 50S backup is perfect for me. I absolutely do not need to spend $7500 on the GFX 100II—especially not just to get this fundamental feature I've been waiting for so long. Nikon, Canon, and Sony don’t have this problem—this is a Fujifilm-specific issue, and it feels like something that could be resolved with a firmware update. Is anyone else having this issue? Does Fujifilm ever plan to address this in a future update? Honestly, I’m insulted that Fujifilm would introduce such an essential feature only for their new system instead of fixing what should have been addressed long ago. It feels like they're trying to push me to buy a new camera to get something that should have been available through a simple update.  This should be a firmware update, and it is long overdue. I feel like I'm the only user out there that has this need. It feels like Fujifilm will just move on and never implement it for cameras like the 100S. It drives me crazy on every shoot. I need this firmware update! Has anyone heard anything about this, or is there any hope of it being fixed? Will Fuji ever fix the camera lockout issue with live view on the GFX 100S and other GFX cameras?
