  1. I remember repairing the keypunch machines, also adjusting the heads on hard disks with an Allen key and an oscilloscope. The hard disks were the size of a washing machine. I remember slugging those bags full of cards to the computer centre in the middle of the night because that was when I could grab a free time slot. Could be used to write and run your Fortran program but nowadays I would prefer something nicer to run a program, even if the output would be a series of digits printed out of a line printer and therefore effectively the same. The thirst for new and more interesting stuff is legitimate I suppose, isn't it.
  2. Rosie, The bw one is beautiful, like film. Let us see some more.
  3. Enzio, Thanks for sharing. You are the King of Butterflies.
  4. Larry, neither have I to be honest but when I found some of my shots to be soft and they were made with me having forgot to switch OIS off, that is what I attributed it to as I always use the self-timer on tripod. Good idea to test it, I will do it sometime. Of course, we don't know what lens the OP is using, if he has OIS on them or not. Another thing comes to my mind, if he is shooting lights like street lamps or even stars, I think it could be a good idea to take off a filter if there is one. Cheers and all the best for this new year.
  5. I have an X-T10 myself. Sorry to hear that. I hope they'll fix it for you quickly. Let us know.
  6. Mike, Lou probably meant the eye (cheek) proximity sensor near the viewfinder, not the image sensor. Nice hat, Lou. What camera ? Try a reset, sorry there is nothing else I can think of. Good luck with this, Lou. All the best for the coming year to both of you.
  7. Sebastien, In the put-them-on-the-dining-table-right-under-peoples-noses-when-travelling scenario I just put on the plastic box thing that is delivered with the flashes, I point them upwards, stand some glasses around them or throw a paper napkin over them. Most of the time people don't pay any attention to these small things. At home I sometimes use a softbox, any cheap old type that is attached to the flash by velcro. That is about as far as I am willing to go, this is not for professional photography, just you know, family pictures, kids etc. brgds George
  8. Sebas(tian?) I use the two Meike 320s that I have mostly off camera, so I don't miss the180 degrees head turn. For example I leave them standing on the table pointing upwards with the diffusers on, between the glasses, or with a napkin thrown over them, and me walking around the table taking pictures of family and friends. Great on a holiday having an evening meal, everybody relaxed and chatting. I have them at a low power setting, people don't seem to be bothered, after a while they forget about me and I have nice sharp pictures, albeit with the background filtered away, which often is no bad thing. Most of the time I don't even take the FlashQ tx off the camera. I have a third rx that I use with my old Canon 420EX alongside the two Ms when at home. I think the Ms are great little things. Good price but they have a premium feel about them. They work well with rechargeable batteries, which I see as a big plus (esp. environmentally). Cheers George
  9. Wi and Quincy, This was the briefest and most hilarious scientific discussion between two experts that I have seen so far. Do you have any more of that stuff ? And what happened to that brownie ? I want to see that (I have no idea what that is, I must google it). btw beautiful subjects for photography on your Bali Charm site. Cheers guys
  10. Hermelin, Enjoy while you can, when our kids got bigger they didn't want to be photographed as often as I wanted to photograph them. They put on spoiling faces. I sometimes bump up colour +1 on Classic Chrome and Pro Neg too, especially if it is overcast or in the shadow. Hendrik, Beautiful, esp. the one with the snow falling from the branches. Hang it on a wall ! btw what on Earth is "peenhäälestus" ??!? Escapes my wildest imagination
  11. Of course you don't. I don't have anything in the 35 equiv. focal length, except my 18-55. I keep reading so many comments that people like 35mm a lot, you said the same, I swear I am going to set my 18-55 to 23 for a month and never move the zoom (tape it !) and see what is it all about, where is the magic. I have the 35f2 and I am looking at the 23f2 but I read some not-so-favorable comments on it. Anyway, I am too busy building the house now so no time for photography. Good luck. Share some photos ! Cheers.
  12. May I ask, maybe you know, does the pixel-shift mechanism in Olympus rotate the sensor ? I thought it would be shifting the sensor. I am asking just out of curiosity, I know nothing about it. Another question that comes to my mind is if we are theoretically considering moving the camera to the order of the size of a pixel, if distortion plays a role at normal focal lengths. But you must have reason for mentioning that and you know the subject, as opposed to me, so I don't argue, I am just wondering. To come back (just for fun) to my idiotic idea, to rotate the camera would possibly be easier than to move it along two axis and it could be built to make very small increments in the angle of rotation. But I say this just for amusement or maybe for some special purpose that is totally remote from normal photography, don't take this seriously. On the other hand, your effort to use a set of random hand-held images to calculate an increase in resolution could be very practical, it is a stroke of genius if you ask me and I find it very interesting. Not because I think I need more pixels or because I think it would improve my photographic or artistic skills, but because as a technical idea and for people who do need more resolution for their work, I think it is a fascinating idea and effort on your part. Compliments & Cheers. Edit: For macro, rotate the subject ?
  13. Rahul, I would suggest Flickr, camera finder and take a look at photos taken with the X70 to see what that focal length looks like (distortion... ). You don't expect to shoot tight headshots with it and have them look as if they were taken with the 90, do you. The X70 is more suited for groups, environmental portraits - including some of the surroundings, as in travel photography, or street photography, I would say.
  14. The entertainment factor would be much bigger and who knows what kind of ground-breaking discovery might be made along the way And one can teach one's kids a trick or two while at it. Btw, the cost of components for this sort of thing is next to nothing. But you are right, of course. It was just an idea.
  15. Interesting... a while ago I read about the automated focus rail slides that some people build to take stacked photos (to achieve greater depth of field in macrophotography). They advance the camera by the means of an Arduino-controlled stepper motor turning a wormdrive. Would it be an idea to use something like this to move the camera along the x and y axis (as opposed to the z axis used in macrophotography, assuming z is the movement towards/from the subject) to achieve manageable pixel shifts ?
  16. No moons ? (after it was in all the news yesterday ?) Surely you guys have better ones, but in the meantime here's mine. The old fella was too high up by the time I got home. X-T10/50-230/handheld/Silkypix
  17. The baby seems to be rather indifferent to the type of film sim chosen but yes the second one is better.
  18. I beat you, Gordon, but your post was longer so I suppose it does not count.
  19. Hermelin, I have all the lens in the first combo (18-55, 35f2, 90) and that is what I would get. The 18-55 is great when you don't have time to change lenses and to zoom with your legs, like in a city with your kids. You can do some architecture shots and some portraits, for instance. The 35f2 is fast to focus, small and light, great for indoors, I like it very much, it turns my X-T10 into a small and very portable camera. The 90 is a killer portrait lens. For me tele is not important, for that I bought the 50-230 for 179 € (!) new and for me it is good enough for tele. To come back to your question, about 50-50. Depends what you like to do. Cheers and congrats to your new-to-be X-T2.
  20. Begi, I am back but I have too much work to do. I will post every now and then. This one is of the "Kriváň" mountain, 2495 m. taken this August over the High Tatras, from "Lomnický štít", 2364 m. above sea level. Full Size All the best, George
  21. First thing I have to do is change my avatar. This one was taken on a cycling trip by my brother with a phone. The only pic of myself I could find when I registered spontaneously on this blog. A fine example of blown highlights, isn't it.
