That's quite a wide pick, it's like deciding if you prefer apples or watermelons more... Both lenses don't serve the same purpose, the XF 90mm is clearly the sharpest of both, but you really need enough space to use it fully, the shots are really coming out tight. The 35mm is a more all generalist lens, you can do a bit of everything with it. It doesn't really matter if you prefer the F1.4 or the F2.0 version, the differences are an f-stop and WR. Between the both, you just need to check if you prefer something usable in low light or rather have a lens on a X-T1 that can take some wet weather conditions. If you have an X-T10 then, then it's just low light consideration. I haven't had the chance to test the 35mm F2 yet, but from the tests seen, the F2.0 is a tad bit sharper but you really need to go into pixel peeping to see the differences. The WR could be an argument for me since I do travel to tropical countries and having a trusty 35mm WR could be handy at times instead of always using the 18-135.

Just make sure you always go upward in version numbers.

Hmm... Still think it's a bit late, usually by this time of camera manufacturing the development is already done and they are preparing the factories for production and getting all the materials. It would be rather costly to suddenly change to another component since all the contracts have been signed and agreements are already in place. Maybe X-T2 ? Or another following model but we are a bit too close of X-Pro2 announcement to have changes applied to it.

I am sorry but I feel very "Meh" about this lens, the only I really like about it is the 18cm close focus. And way too many moving parts and those mods looks super easy to misplace and/or get broken.

Change the shooting mode from S to M on the front dial maybe ? Then again I am not certain I understand your wishes correctly. There shouldn't be any EV compensation, just maybe the White Balance if you left one on Auto instead of having it set at a certain Kelving degree. As soon you set out your ISO out, the aperture and speed, the auto EV shouldn't be doing anything yet as far as I know.

Keep it and put a tag on like with "I survived hell" or something akin to that

To get back to the "gap" in the Fuji lenses releases. I would like to remind that Fuji XF series came into existence only 3 years ago, almost 4, granted, but the mount is still considered by many as in its infancy when compared to Canikon who have been making lenses for the Nikon F mount over 50 years and a bit above 30 years for Canon's EF mount. So of course those two will have a lot more choices, m43 has 2 manufacturer behind the mount and Sony E mount... Well let's not talk about Sony lenses, it's a bit miserable over there... Let's just say that I feel sorry for them. That being said, there are indeed gaps in the current Fuji line up, we are still missing a wide angle zoom at F2.8 to complete the "Pro" line triumvirate and the long range over 200mm is depressingly empty. True, most of us that like long range shooting already have the gear from other manufacturers but yeah. Here is the hope toward that 100-400mm. As for lenses themselves, the 18mm is only soft at the edges, which by itself wouldn't be that bad but because of that silly good 18-55 being sharper at 18mm F2.8 than the prime at the edges held some buyers off and are waiting for the next iteration of it. So if that "kit" lens of 18-55 wasn't that damn good to begin with, we would all be super happy about the prime and it would already be sitting in my daily bag closely nested against my X-T1 along the 27mm. As for the 23mm being big, well yeah it's almost as big as the 10-24mm F4 but let's put things into perspective for a moment shall we ? XF 23 F1.4: 63mm long and 296g (without hood) XF 14 F2.8: 58mm long and 234g (without hood) XF 18-55 : 70mm - 98mm long and 308g (without hood) XF 10-24 : 87mm long and 404g (without hood) It doesn't really look that big nor that heavy to me. Does it look big on a X-T1 ? Of course it does, that thing is almost the size of the zoom kit ! Does it annoy anyone who wants that focal length ? Not that much. I have seen colleagues doing portraits shots with that a Nikkor 105mm Macro on a D800, was it practical ? Not one bit ! But was it good ? Heck yeah it was, one of his best portrait I would say. As for the rest of the line up, focal length wise, we are pretty good from 10 to 135-200ish, bit of quirky here and there but in overall, we have a good line up and a lot of them are downright very good if not excellent and some are purely superbe (looking at you 90mm F2).

Like the others posters, the 23mm f1.4 is among the best lens of the XF series, if you find it mediocre I am afraid not much else within the XF mount would please you. While the bulk is real and can be cumbersome the quality that comes out of it does counter balance it. As for the 27mm, it is a lens of compromise, we are exchanging a bit of the IQ for size. That being said I certainly do not find it that weak, it still a good lens and the size works in its favor.
-
The two cameras are doing different things, the X100 series is clearly for an easy to carry around, the X-Pro1 offer the flexibility of XF lenses while keeping it smallish. Now, if we could get an XF pankake 23mm F2.8 lens, I am certain there would be many buyers from the forum already.

I know that Patona has a traveler friendly charger, which can used with power outlet, an external powerbank and that thingy in cars for smokers (can't seems to find the word back in English, sorry). I keep it with me almost every time I have my X-T1 with me. There might be other brands who can do the same thing but I do not know them that well enough.

I made a website! ...and now I have no idea what I'm doing
darknj replied to jobush95's topic in General Discussion
I rather like it, the website look pretty and the picture are definitely nice, some of them are a tad off for my taste but I still globally like what you have done so far. As what/how things are done, just do whatever you want. It's your own place after all. I rarely share my pictures because I don't feel like it while a colleague of mine put them up pretty much everywhere he can, at the end of day, it doesn't matter as we both enjoy taking pictures and what we do has to please us personally first. Also going to rejoin Tom's on the small note but leave out the technicalities, when I look at a picture, I don't like seeing how it was taken, I just want to soak in the image and the moment, building up my own feeling of what is happening. I still remember an advice back from when I started this whole photography thing "Tell more by showing less", I rather like this advice and try to abide to it whenever possible. -
Newbie...Question about the XT1...accidentally submerged!!!!
darknj replied to creole53's topic in Fuji X-T1 / Fuji X-T10
I will repeat again what Quincy said and also add that since it was salt water, there is a very good chances that the camera has died. You could let it dry for a least a week off, I have known camera that kept working after a good bottle of coke was spilled onto them but the body wasn't the same anymore. I guess "Sorry for your loss" is due :x -
Is the DMC-GX8 the X-Pro2 I've been waiting for?
darknj replied to Tom's topic in General Discussion
I am really not certain that the EvF of the GX8 would be that much better, on paper they are pretty much the same, the real differences comes when taking video where Panasonic truely outshine Fuji but for stills ? I highly doubt it would be that much better. -
X-Pro1 Dead after 3.50 Firmware upgrade
darknj replied to TBC's topic in Fuji X-Pro 1 / Fuji X-Pro 2 / Fuji X-Pro 3
First thing, are you still able to load the camera in the firmware upgrade mode ? If not, yeah, your camera might be dead because of something that went wrong during the update, could have been anything and only a shipping back for repair might solve it. On the other hand, if the upgrade mode is still active there might be a chance to salvage it either by trying the upgrade again or try to downgrade to the previous one. -
The 18-55 is already a very good lens by itself, for future update on lenses it highly depends on your preferences, if you shot Nikon for years, chances are you already know what you like.
-
I has no idea they updated the protection days,so thank you for the info! And yes I got charged VAT and handling but even like that it was still cheaper than buying it in Europe. It was 620€ for everything.

Weirdest special offer for a X Pro 1
darknj replied to milandro's topic in Fuji X-Pro 1 / Fuji X-Pro 2 / Fuji X-Pro 3
I rather like the 27, it's small enough to always have it in any bag I have with me and I have grown into the FoV of that lens -
Building out a versatile but useful kit for a trip
darknj replied to andrewv8's topic in Fuji X Lenses
The most versatile lens in the X system is still the 18-135mm F3.5-5.6. Hard to beat its coverage and the 5 stops OIS is quite impressive and can get you super spoiled. Now if you prefer primes, you really can't go wrong with the 90mm F2. Quite decent reach and competing among the sharpest lenses that we currently have, if not the sharpest. I would advise against the 56 1.2, the 35mm F1.4 would serve you quite well in low light situation already and the X-T10 holds ISO 6400 quite nicely, only exception is if you really plan to do portraits that where it really shine. The 60mm is rather a small package all rounder, you can do a bit of everything and I personally like the closer focus distance, while it's not a 1:1 macro lens but it is good enough to be used as one and does an "okay" job as portrait, just don't expect it to be fast. It will be a bit faster than the 35mm F1.4 but not by much. -
Got my 10-24 F4 from evilBay, the seller was from Australia and I am in Belgium, the shipping went quite fast but it came in the week where our postal service was on strike for a week, which delayed a lot before I actually got my lens. It was exactly the condition the seller described and there was no optical fault and works like a charm and was delivered with large bubble wrapping and a generic non descriptive brown box. One thing to not forget is as you pay with Paypal, you have a 60 days worth of coverage is something goes wrong with your purchase. I used to get second hand lenses from the gray market too on semi regular basis mostly because there are online retailer that are located in different places in Europe where the VAT are much lower and offer free shipping, so they are some advantages to that part. Just stick to well known payment method and avoid direct cash transfer or if possible, drive there and test the gear out.

Like posters above I am also going to reiterate, finding the perfect bag is nigh impossible task. There will be always something that annoys you here and there. I currently use 3 bags, considering getting 2 more for different reasons. One of them is the Thinktank Shape Shifter, which can hold a really impressive amount of gear bit is really tall and wide but can be zipped down to be less than 8 inches thick. The other one is the new Peak Design bag because it got me curious and I wanted a larger bag that can serve as my daily usage bag with just a single camera and lens. In essence, we get our bags for use case, so far I got: Billingham 305, a really spacious bag. Currently serving as the bag where all my active gear is put. Love this bag, I have it for years and still serves me well, it was clearly made to last for years of usage, had 3 generation of DSLR in there and still performing like the first day. Vanguard Up-Rise 33, a medium range bag, helps me for half day event coverage, roomy enough to carry several Fuji lenses along the X-T1 plus laptop and Fuji SP-1 printer. Can be a bit cumbersome to move around with it as it is messenger style and if you load it full you will get a sore shoulder. Also cabin friendly bag, works all fine for traveling around and GREAT after sales support, I lost the shoulder strap after a flight from Singapore, contacted their support line and they sent me a brand new one for free, definitely earned my respect on that one. Fossil Wagner Mens City Bag, super simple bag, had to steal some padding from my Vanguard for extra protection but I can carry my X-T1 with a couple of lenses along pretty much all I need on a daily basis. Also perfect example that you do not need dedicated camera bags to carry around and still have your gear with you every day. The Thinktank will be for when I need to travel with almost all my gear, but it won't be good whole day bag, your back is going to hate you for doing that. The Peak Design is intended to be my new daily bag, we will see how it holds but worst case, it could be either be a replacement of the Vanguard or a backup when I want to change style a bit. If you go bag shopping in a local retailer, take your gear with you to have an idea of how much space it will take in the bag and how the rest of your gear will work out inside.

I have a personal preference for the 10-24, mostly because I am building my version of "walk around" bag when traveling and that ultrawide zoom fits nicely with the 18-135 that I already have. For your case, it would highly depends on what are your priorities in size/weight vs IQ. The Rokinon 12mm F2 is also an excellent choice, smaller and cheaper than the 16mm.
-
I am building myself the 10-24 and 18-135 combo, those lenses are rather bulky and not very good when you hit low light situations, hence I got the 35 F1.4 and added the 27mm F2.8 when I want a small carry around version of my camera. The 16-55 is stellar in performances but it's huge, head to Fuji vs Fuji for a comparison. As I have never tried nor touched the 55-200 I really can not say anything about it. Aside from the test shots I have seen, it's an XF lens. Meaning, it's good at what it does and IQ is there, just don't go and compare it to sharpness monsters like the 55-140 F2.8 or the 90mm F2. The setup I would use for landscape is clearly 10-24 and 18-135 for when you are outside in day with your family. The X100s can be kept for either indoors shooting or just simple walk around camera. Also, if you like the ultra wide angle, Rokinon 12mm is very well loved in this forum and for good reasons, we have a thread dedicated to it about here.

He specialize in Metal genra which needs around 1/200 for the drum guy, he shoots with a D800 with either the 14-24 F2.8 or the 24-70 F2.8 depending on how far he is. I have to say it's not something I am very knowledgeable at since I take most of picture in decent to good natural light conditions.

While I do agree to your sentiment, I would like to point out Fuji has been making XF lenses only for a few years, September 2012 to be precise. In about 3 years worth of time they released 16 lenses that all gets the job done. While Nikon has been making lenses for the same F mount for the past 50 years and around 30 years for the Canon EF mount, the XF series mount is quite young, barely out of its infancy. In comparison, the m34 mount released 23 lenses between September 2012 and last month, but there are 2 manufacturer behind that mount system. The overlapping lenses are mostly because they can sell more of them than those super long zooms, not that many of us needs ranger further than 200mm FF equivalent. And those with the need for it, most likely have the gear from other manufacturers to get the job done. Fuji is also testing the waters a bit here and there to see what its public wants. So far, it seems that the consumers wants more Instax camera. So yeah, go figure that one out when you try to convince the higher management that you need that much amount of fund to start R&D for a XF 100-400mm lens.

Thank you for the correction, yes I meant the F2.8. Also fully agreeing with you on that point. In full bright light or even half decent conditions, those differences hardly matter. But I have learned from a colleague that cover concerts even musical events that even half a stop of light could mean getting a shot or not getting anything at all. Hence adding the precision for the OP because we have no idea what the subject will be.
