Hello! I just bought this lens, it is new but I think there's something wrong with it

When I shoot close to the subject at MDF wide open f2... this lens does a halo glow duplicating the edges of white things on the closest "bokeh area" to the focused area. No filters or dirty lens. Anyone with similar experience in this lens or should I return it? Here some examples of this effect. Sorry for my english, and thank you in advance.

There is one example on this link => http://fujistas.com/foro/attachments/captura-de-pantalla-2016-07-25-a-las-19-00-48-png.7124/

And this full resolution in flickr

You mean to say that the un-sharp white parts have an “ halo” around them?

Your picture doesn’t look “ strange” to me for a lens used at close distance other than it is also possibly slightly motion-blurred or in any case not particularly sharp.

You appear to have focussed on the F of the first line of the main text despite the 1/80 of the shutter speed it looks like you might have not held this very steadily , however, other than that I don’t see anything particularly strange or wrong.

Thanks milandro! What I mean is easily seen in the other picture at this link http://fujistas.com/foro/attachments/captura-de-pantalla-2016-07-25-a-las-19-00-48-png.7124/

I don't know how to post it directly, but that one was shoot at f2, 1/250 and 200 ISO. The ghost - glowing edges are more noticeable here, specially in the two little stones with a few separattion between them at the center-top of the picture. I've seen this effect in very old lens, but never in a new one :S XF35mm f2 users in my country fuji forum don't think it's normal, but wanted to know more opinions.

Thank you Milandro! I've already order a return. Sorry jlmphotos! I can't get closer or magnify the picture to show the effect in a better size.

I'll do the same tests with the new 35mm to check if it gets better once it arrives. Also I'll update the post so it can help other users in the future.

Regards.

The new copy arrived, does the same thing. I've done a research and found this blue glow effect at close up pictures taken since 2015, so I guess it's normal for this lens.

Once you are at 45-50cm distance from the subject... the rendering is normal and very sharp even at f2 so it's ok for me

I've taken the same picture with an old 50mm with lens turbo and the bokeh is smooth without this glow ghost effect, so I guess the sensor is clean and the problem is on the XF35mm f2. For what I've seen it's a normal thing in the lens, but people won't notice unless really close up pictures with high contrast white and black patterns in the bokeh.

I really hope Fuji to fix this on the upcoming XF23mm f2, because that's going to be my general propouse lens, and I'll use MDF a lot, specially if it is as short as on the X100 series.

Thanks for the answers, i think the problem is related to lose of sharpness at minimum distance, i dont have the 35f2 anymore but same happends to the 23f2 which is soft until you step back. Maybe is because of this or because the new lens coating, but not the camera.

Anyway its not a big deal for most of the shoots. Regards and thank you again.

Halos and softness are normal for the 35mm F2 at close focus distances. It sharpens up if you stop down (which, honestly, you're going to want to do for macro-ish shots anyway to increase the depth of field).

IIRC it has something to do with how the elements are arranged for autofocus. I could be wrong, but I thought I read that with the larger primes, the autofocus is more complicated (something along the lines of different groups moving different amounts). Whereas with the newer f/2 WR primes, a larger group of elements is moved as a single unit, which allows for faster autofocus, but affects the image quality around the minimum focus distance.

Many non-macro lenses are soft close up wide open. The difference is that most lenses with optical designs that would be soft close up are also designed with their minimum focus distance outside the area of poor performance. For some reason Fuji decided to allow these lenses to focus closer than they perhaps should have. Although, as I said, anyone who knows what they're doing shooting macro isn't going to be doing it wide open or anywhere near it (and probably not with this lens either).

The 35mm F2 was designed to be small and light above all... And I like it for that. I do wish it had more (read any!) optical distortion correction, though.

Still, it's small, light and fantastically sharp, even wide open, when focused at a distance.

    • Hey everyone, I am new to the fujifilm system, and I just received my X100vi about 15 days ago, and yesterday I noticed that ISO and exposure dials are acting up. I spent hours watching YouTube videos and reading forms without finding any solutions. Using ChatGPT or Gemini also didn’t help. My issues are the following: If I want to set my ISO at a specific value then the camera LCD/EVF shows a totally different value. For example, I have shutter manual, aperture manual and ISO dial at 6400, the camera shows ISO at 4000, when I take pictures it will show ISO at 4000 and not 6400. When I try to choose another ISO value it will skip some of the available values that are shown on the dial. Another issue I am having is when my exposure dial is not set at specific value, then I cannot set ISO to Auto no matter what value I select on the dial. If I do select the different exposure compensation values, then I choose A for ISO, the camera will activate the front commend dial to manually change ISO values. To get in Auto ISO, the shutter speed cannot be set in auto and the ISO dial should be set at 125, when I turn the ISO wheel, it seems like the numbers are misaligned by one value, If I put the dial on A with shutter speed manual, then it will trigger the front commend dial. The other issue that I am having is when I have Aperture, shutter speed and ISO on manual, If I change the exposure dial compensation + or - , it actually changes the exposure of the picture as well as the ISO value, which as I understand, if Camera is in full manual, the exposure dial should do nothing. The last issue that I am having, if I do have ISO in manual at a set value, and adjust exposure compensation dial, it alters my ISO instead of my shutter speed or my aperture, even though ISO is in Manual and the other two dials are in Automatic. I am not really sure if all of this is by design and I am just not understanding how everything works together, but it seems really odd how everything changes. Resetting the camera settings didn’t help.
    • I also have the eaxct problem with my X-T5. The remote used to work, but not anymore. I also get the light coming on on the camera back, and autofocus will happen, but no shutter release. Since I use the 2 or 10 seconds timer more I don't know if a firmware update is the cause of this negative change. I actualley only use the wired jack-remote for action release on a tripod.  Did anybody find a cause, and even more assisting, a solution?
    • I have the same issue. Have you found the the solution?

    • On my XPro 2 the rear command dial, when pressed, can cycle through 3 different magnification levels in the OVF.
