Fuji 18-55 - OIS on or off for panning

Can you leave the OIS mode on for panning shots?

OIS should be off for panning. OIS will be confused by the panning action.

Agreed.  Off for panning.  And with that having been said the only time I "remember" to turn off my OIS is when I put the camera on a tripod.  So far, no ill effects.

I would love to have a definitive answer to this question from Fuji. Some other makes have a panning setting for their image stabilisation. Unfortunately, because it is in the nature of panning to get some blurred shots, it is very difficult to test. I would think that it should be easy to discriminate between low frequency panning motion and the higher frequencies of camera shake and build that into the system. But is it and do they?

Also when using high-ish shutter speeds, the OIS may even add blurring, I encountered. Which seems counter-intuitive.

 

I know Canon have a threeway switch on their IS lenses, where one click is dedicated to panning. Fuji do not do this on their lenses though.

Hi all.

I can answer my own question now because I tried it at the weekend for some motorsport action and the answer for me was OIS on.

Worked perfectly when panning the cars and gave me good images down to quite slow shutter speeds.
