frod got a reaction from Matt Sweadner in Velvet 56 vs 56mm 1.2 (vs 35mm 1.4)
It seems like the natural evolution from the current trends for the overuse of bokeh, smear more and more of the image until I start to think I have cataracts.

Just one more thing to note with the humble 18mm, it's currently the only X system lens at gets to 1:1 with the macro tubes:

I know some people think this is important. Pretty insane working distance but nevertheless...

Edit: just noticed the xc 16-50... Not that 2mm is useable.

That's an intriguing response, please elucidate.

I realize that 'no rectilinear distortion' is probably a simplistic, subjective overstatement on my part. However, after shooting with the lens for four or five months now - and with an eye for architecture (even though I don't spend my time taking square-on pictures of brick walls) I don't think it's an exaggeration.

I didn't make my judgment from the EVF or the little screen on the back, so much as the results I see on my computer screens. And while I'll grant that at the 55 mm end of the zoom range, there's a suggestion on pincushioning, nowhere in the zoom range - particularly at the 16 mm end, where I find myself using it most often - have I been able to identify any barrel distortion.

And (perhaps because I'm an old fart who doesn't grasp modern technology) I fail to understand how the image that the lens transmits - be it in-camera or in-jpeg (new terminology, OK?) can be evidentially 'different' in terms of what's being passed through the glass to the 'film' plane. Either it's bent, or it ain't, surely?

Jaco, what on earth do you think you're talking about, here? Why are you participating in this thread, you silly person?

You are off topic completely (we're discussing a particular lens, here) you can't spell 'waste' and the general attitude you convey is one of arrogance and condescension, despite your obvious ignorance.

Please get over yourself, before next 'contributing' to this discussion. Sheesh!

If you're photographing fast moving subjects you'll get better results from learning to do zone focusing regardless of lens on fuji.

I prefer to have 1 or 2 batteries charging while I'm out shooting with another pair, personally. I can't take the downtime of having to tether the camera to a charger.

frod reacted to gordonrussell76 in That 35mm f1.4 magic in other Fujinon lenses?
The 35mm F1.4 is the lens is my yardstick, its just magical and on the X-T2 with Acros the love affair has just been getting deeper for me.

In terms of other lens in the system that have a similar rendering, for me the only one that comes close is the 90mm, the 56mm is more in the same camp as the 23mm a bit more clinical, its a lovely lens, but the 90 and 35 are nicer. I have not used the APD, my suspicion is that the APD might get closer to the 35mm magic.

At the wide end the 18mm is probably the closest match rendering wize, possibly the 16mm as well I have not had hands on experience of that lens.

Fuji seems to have camps of lenses

18/35/90 - Have that look, kind of creamy dreamy but with nice contrast and they do wonderful things with light and fall off, I think of this lot as the vintage crew.

14/23/56 - All very sharp, contrasty, bit more clinical, a more modern look.

10-24/18-55/16/55/55-200/50-140/100-400mm - The Zoom crew, all very similar in rendering, also quite clinical, bokeh can be a bit more harsh, although interestingly the 55-200 at around the 90mm -135mm mark is just delicious bokeh wize, harder to get but when you do nicer and more attractive than the 50-140.

    The odds and sods

16mm (sort of between the vintage and modern primes, not enough hands on experience to decide which camp its in.
60mm this has its very own rendering in my opinion, can be very crunchy contrast wize. Nice lens
27mm again has its own rendering, probably closer to the 60mm than anythings else.

frod got a reaction from anywhereian in red outlines appearing during focus in Viewfinder?
Sounds like it was set to manual focus with focus peaking enabled, the red outlines show what's in focus. You can easily turn this off and it shouldn't show when auto focus is enabled. However, it is incredibly helpful when using manual or adapted lenses.

My only other suggestion would be to contact the guys at lenstag - even though you won't be able to register the lenses normally as they require photographic evidence, they may be able to add it to their database to help you and the police anyway.

As usual, the best advice is to choose the lenses you require first and foremost. The system naturally follows from that choice.

Given you have most focal lengths covered multiple times it's hardly surprising you're not sure what to take - you've probably never spent enough time with one lens to learn its strengths.

For me, I'd take the 23 and 56, because that's all I ever take anywhere. If I owned the 18-135 I'd take that because I can't see another reason to own it otherwise (I don't).

I think a lot of people think landscape = wide and end up disappointed by the results. I remember doing this myself with a Sigma zoom in my Nikon days.

Wide lenses emphasise the foreground and send the middle distance even further away and vanish the far distance into almost nothing. Not to mention the distortion is incredibly unflattering for people not in the centre of the frame. They are not really everyday lenses unless you make that your style, and the Fuji options are quite expensive for what could end up being sparingly used lenses.
