Petzval 58mm Bokeh Control( adapted to Fuji?)
milandro replied to milandro's topic in Adapting lenses to Fuji X
Thanks, Unfortunately it is not clear whether this was taken with just an adapter (Canon or Nikon) or with a Focal reducer. I’ve asked the photographer, we shall see what she answers. I doubt that such an amount of swirl could be obtained without. In that case the price of lens + another lens turbo adapter would be such that we wouldn’t be far off a Lomo/Petzval. I have been in touch with Lensbaby and they confirmed that the swirl is much reduced when used without a focal reducer on an APS-C that and a pit of a “ wide” look of these pictures makes me think this was made using a focal reducer such as the Lens Turbo. -
Why does X-Pro2 cost more than X-T2?
milandro replied to Therapeuo63's topic in Fuji X-Pro 1 / Fuji X-Pro 2 / Fuji X-Pro 3
it is true that the X-Pro 2 is not more expensive than the X-T2 , in same areas of the world at least or for the time being that appears to be the case and, in fact BH and other USA shops give you now an instant rebate making this first camera just a little bit CHEAPER than the second. -
Electronic shutter any better than XT1?
milandro replied to Naddan28's topic in Fuji X-T2 / Fuji X-T20
Any electronic shutter will always have issues because of the way it works, it is not an issue liked to a model or other, is the nature of the beast. I don’t know why use the electronic shutter unless one really has to as for example during a theater production or, as I once did, during the recording of a CD. -
the only reason why they updated these things is (as they previously did with the new lenses ) is that otherwise owners of the older camera cannot buy their NEW products, so, in order not to shut-off that potential market (which would have bought other products otherwise) they are giving lens and flash functionalities away, but are providing nothing new when it comes to upgrading the functions of the camera that we already had or add new ones. I am not unhappy with what I’ve got but what they gave us is what in Dutch is defined “ A cigar from your own box"
-
unless I am mistaken that’s what Fuji says they’ve updated, which, as I read, it is only Flash fuctions, if there is more please elaborate because a lot of people have commented in the same direction that I did. 1.Compatibility with the Shoe Mount Flash EF-X500. Additional functions like the multi-flash lighting, high-speed flash sync and so on can be used with the EF-X500. Accordingly, the FLASH SETTING and the Shooting Menu is dramatically changed. 2.The items that can be assigned to the Quick Menu have changed. FLASH FUNCTION SETTINGS and FLASH COMPENSATION have been added due to the compatibility with the Shoe Mount Flash EF-X500. 3.The roles that can be assigned to the Function buttons have changed. FLASH FUNCTION SETTINGS, TTL-LOCK and MODELING FLASH have been added due to the compatibility with the Shoe Mount Flash EF-X500.

Well, as predicted this only appears to involve extended Flash functionality. I don’t use any of these flashes. If that is indeed the case, time will tell, I won’t upgrade the software in that case. I am rather disappointed that they didn’t even bother to add some minor goodie ( even just involving the looks of the screen or something silly like that). It is not yet clear whether the fact that the X-T1 is still for sale ( and that is also true of the X-T10 and the X-E2S) and hasn’t been yet and officially discontinued means that this model is going to stay to provide an alternative at a cheaper price for those who can’t afford the X-T2 and won’t go the extra mile to have 8million pixels more or a joystick or a camera to do sport when all they do is to shoot, portraits, still life, flowers, meadows and churches. If all they are doing is to keep them on board until stocks in shops and at the factory (where I suppose there are still sensors left untouched) are gone, they better show their hand. I have spoken to my local shop and they say that practically sales of these older model are halted completely. Also, the X pro 2 saw a rush when it was introduced but when the X-T2 hit the shelves the sales of the X pro 2 dropped significantly and are now dragging their feet. The camera that really sells is the X-T2 , for whatever reasons the market stays where the money is. Nobody bets their money on yesteryear horse.

Petzval 58mm Bokeh Control( adapted to Fuji?)
milandro replied to milandro's topic in Adapting lenses to Fuji X
then it is even cheaper here in the NL! Anyway I have to give it some thought and do more research. Still it would be nice to see if some Fuji users of this board would share their Petzval ( 58, 85) or Twist 60 experiences. -

Here €180 buys you only the optical element, if you want the whole Twist 60 it costs around 280 (+ the adapter to Fuji). Do you mean that the shop in Belgium sells the WHOLE Twist 60, optics AND Helicoid with aperture for €180? If that is the case I’ll buy it! -

I have a focal reducer too, a zhongyi lens turbo II but is a M42, I would have to swap the M42 for one for Nikon or Canon. I’ll think about that. -
Petzval 58mm Bokeh Control( adapted to Fuji?)
milandro replied to milandro's topic in Adapting lenses to Fuji X
well, for the amount of money that the sole lens costs it would be worth it because it is really cheap. I already have the Kipon tilt lens adapter ( M42 to FX) , which, to some extent, is a very similar gizmo to the lensbaby composer II, of course I don’t have an helicoid which would allow me to fit the Twist optics on it and mount it on the Kipon Tilt adapter, because then, I too, would have a lens which twists and tilts the image. I will have to give it some thought, maybe it is possible to buy a Canon to M42 adapter and fit the lens on the tilt adapter but I am not sure that it would keep the focus at infinity, although probably I won’t use this that way. Also, the maximum swirl effect of these lenses is all based on its use on a full frame, while using this on a Aps-c, some of the vignetting and swirl will simply fall outside of the sensor. In fact, reading this review https://photofocus.com/2016/05/16/lens-review-lensbaby-twist-60/ has confirmed to me that the “ swirl” will be almost invisible on a crop sensor. I already have a lens that can be used for its soft qualities when shooting at 1.8 and at F8 is as sharp as you can possibly get, but it has no swirl which made me hope I could find something to get this effect. Oh well, maybe I’ve just saved €300 then -

Nice, didn’t know this lensbaby, the price looks also enticing. The only problem is that it appears this lens doesn’t come with a Fuji bayonet I suppose this means I could buy one with a Nikon bayonet and an adapter? ( the picture is from the advertising material by lensbaby) -
This is my X-T1 with an adapted 50mm Meyer Oreston f1.8 at f8 with the aid of a Kipon Tilt Adapter and a bit of post processing in NIK.

X-pro 2 sooc waxy skin?
milandro replied to petergabriel's topic in Fuji X-Pro 1 / Fuji X-Pro 2 / Fuji X-Pro 3
I think in most western countries the typical Fuji user is someone over 50 or a much younger hipster. I’ve compared my X-T1 to a X-pro 2 and couldn’t really see any significant difference but maybe others have better eyes and/or different expectations. Up until this point I haven’t seen any reason to upgrade, maybe will do so by the time the next generation of sensors will come to us -
the 18-55 is not WR ( the 16-55 and the 18-135 are WR) http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/x/fujinon_lens_xf18_55mmf28_4_r_lm_ois/specifications/ as for the rain, you can rainproof anything with something as simple as a plastic bag or something like this

X-pro 2 sooc waxy skin?
milandro replied to petergabriel's topic in Fuji X-Pro 1 / Fuji X-Pro 2 / Fuji X-Pro 3
Poor light existed even before digital photography, and you couldn’t shoot portraits with film at Asa/Iso above 1600. No box contains chops. In any case, it is what it is. -
X-pro 2 sooc waxy skin?
milandro replied to petergabriel's topic in Fuji X-Pro 1 / Fuji X-Pro 2 / Fuji X-Pro 3
There is no account for taste, but why? I simply don’t understand it. When I started taking pictures, a very long time ago, nobody in his right mind would have shot a portrait at 1600 ISO and above. We all dealt with films that simply could have not been used that way and we didn’t. At some point “ beauty “ photographers ( those whom shot make up and things like that) used to overexpose 3 stops and underdevelop two stops. This made sure that the skin tomes were pastel and the surface equalized ( I am talking of times before the widespread use of any computer!). But again “ unicuique suum ” -

what I really don’t understand is that this supposed “ problem” appears only at high ISO and I really don’t think that I shoot portraits at high ISO so what is the problem? However it is what it is. If one likes the rendition of colors and surfaces by Fuji one likes it, if one doesn’t one doesn’t. Fuji has had plenty of time to give this a thought and if they didn’t do anything is either because they don’t want to or can’t or, more likely, because they don’t see, as I do, the problem. -
Petzval 58mm Bokeh Control( adapted to Fuji?)
milandro replied to milandro's topic in Adapting lenses to Fuji X
I’d rather use the new lensbaby trio because at least one of its lenses has a decent swirl and it costs a lot less than a Petzval. The only real drawback is the fact that the trio lens is only a 28mm with a fixed aperture of 3,5 and that it has three effect soft focus lenses but I would only use this one or maybe another one of the 3, the plus side is the price. for a mere € 300 you get this lens and the other two are a bonus. Maybe. just maybe I could find one secondhand because I am sure that some buyers will enthusiastically buy but very quickly realize that they use it only sometimes. -
Petzval 58mm Bokeh Control( adapted to Fuji?)
milandro replied to milandro's topic in Adapting lenses to Fuji X
you probably mean to” invert” ( rather than rotate) the last lens ( the first will be generally called the front lens) and yes, it would be cheap but it doesn’t necessarily work with all versions of the Helios lens. I think that you are referring to the content of this video. However I tried it on my copy of the Helios 44-M and it couldn’t work as simply as shown in the video because more than just the last lens came undone ( it was a group of lenses not jut one as you see in that video). However even then the results are not quite the same as with the Petzval. They are, in my opinion a lot “ softer” overall while the proper petzval shows a sharp-is picture in the center with a degree of swirl depending on the adjustment and the aperture tabs. I agree that a lot of the “ mystique” of this lens is jut expensive look material and a generous amount of “ hot air” but there is more to it that meets the eye (if you look only superficially). -
Petzval 58mm Bokeh Control( adapted to Fuji?)
milandro replied to milandro's topic in Adapting lenses to Fuji X
I have a number or original and non original fuji lenses, including the 8mm and the 12mm Samyang. I also have 3 adapters ( normal, tilt and focal reducer) which I use for M42 lenses which are obviously meant to make the use of non Fuji lenses on a Fuji camera. The Petzval does something (one thing, really) that is otherwise impossible with any of the original fuji lenses. See the change of swirl and bokeh here. It does that at a considerable price though. This lens costs an arm and a leg even though this lens is produced in Russia ( and supposedly now even cheaper than it could be with a very low ex-change rate of the ruble at the moment). I don’t know If I would ever want to buy such a one pony trick but I am considering it. -

here what it looks like if you don’t know -
I have, unsuccessfully, started a thread on the 85mm Petzval some time ago. Unsuccessfully because I asked the members to share for their pictures but unfortunately nobody appeared to have such a lens. One of the reasons might be that the Petzval 85 is a really long lens on a APS-C format for the ideally intended purposes of such a lens. So I wonder whether anyone has bought the NEW 58 version of this lens in its “ Bokeh control” version (Which I believe to me so much more useful end easy to use) Please share here your pictures.

The humble (though honorable) XC 50-230mm f 4.5.-6.7
milandro replied to milandro's topic in Fuji X Lenses
mine is 2 years old and still perfectly working and looking -
I have owned the X10 and was happy with it. I bought it from a young man who had bought it and hardly ever used it, he did everything with the phone. Sold to another young man whose mother came to pick it up and she said she didn’t understand why her son bought a camera since he had a phone. The problem of these camera was precisely that they don’t really have a large customer’s base. That is why Fuji is no longer investing in them.
