I am using a X-E1 camera with a vintage Canon FD 50mm F1.8 lens.

When I take an image the result is always soft, even though the viewfinder or screen show a very sharp image, however as soon as I press the shutter pre-view the image is soft, and when I take the photograph, the result is soft - like it is very slightly out of focus. I have used this with focus peaking and everything looks sharp. Am I correct in assuming that images seen on the screen when focusing is via the lens? is it the lens? or my setting or my manual focusing ability. some help will be useful, TIA.

Thanks for the reply. I think 1 found 2 issues,

1. The FD mount defaulted to fully open position, I did not realise the outer ring on the adapter should be set to lock. This allows the aperture to be set.

2. On the tripod the sharpness was better. Hand held shots suffered from some camera shake.

I have turned off focus peaking, however I still believe I am not getting the full sharpness of the Canon FD 50mm lens and would be grateful for any further suggestions on how to improve the images, esp when hand held. TIA.

The vast majority of the photos I take with my X-E3 are with manual lens. I do not like the peak focus setting, rather I opt to move the joystick focus point to the area I want to make sure is in focus, then press the dial wheel which zooms in on the selected area for fine focusing.

I agree with mdm that blur will be due to shutter speed, and since I use Aperture Priority setting, if with my chosen stop  the shutter is too slow, I change my ISO to suit.

On a wider angle lens like my TT Artisan 17mm which has a very wide focus range at f/8, even f/4 is pretty good, I just point and shoot.

I hope this helps.

    • OK, they aren't real.  It's a shark exhibit at my local museum.   Very dark in there—I had to rate the ISO at 6400 and 8000. GFX100RF.

    • Well thank you all for you reactions, I haven´t found a lot of options to buy a used Mark I and the Mark II seemed expensive even though I´m sure its a very good lense. So I ended up getting the Sigma 17-40 which I have found for a reasonable deal and so far I am very very happy with it. Weight is good, size is definitely ok for me and I love the internal zoom and weather resistance. The sharpness is very good for my taste and the autofocus works awesomely fast for me. Plus the 1.8 is great to have, I really like that option and shoot wide open in a lot of instances.   So in combination with my 50-140 I have no a combination of lenses for concert photography that makes me very very happy currently.    So thats my update, not sure if its of any interest to anyone but I thought since I opened that thread I wanted to give it its due diligence.
    • Big congratulations! I think the XT-5 is a fine camera you can really sink your teeth into. I bought one recently. And I retired a couple years ago, revitalizing an old photography hobby like you. You have a great plan taking shape. It's amazing how much they packed into this camera, and it's amazing how many of the mundane challenges of photography years ago have been fixed or improved. I also bought "The Complete Guide to Fujifilm's X-T5 B&W Edition" and think it's a fantastic book, way way better than a few other books I tried. It's a big paperback and the author also lets you download a PDF version which is great for searching. I have had a blast with it. Happy hunting!!
    • My rear Command dial now only gives 2 shutter speeds, but the Front Command dial allows full shutter speed range. The rear command dial is set to Shutter Speed and top dial is set to'T'...this has worked perfectly for 2 years but now only allows 2 shutter speeds. SS Operation set to ON.Firmware 4.31 Help please
