I don't there is an answer for this question that works for all.  Either are good multi-purpose lenses and aren't miles apart.  You could look for a good, used example and give it a try. Or buy both used and resell the one you don't like as well.

Both! How is your comfort zone with getting close to strangers? How tight do you like the framing? I personally love the 40mm full frame perspective (27mm on Fuji crop) and believe it's a fantastic semi wide for street and environmental portraiture.

There are as many answers to this as there are photographers in the world. It's a matter of personal preference. In the analog/full-frame world, there are probably as many who prefer the 50 as the 35. When you get right down to it, the difference between 23, 28, and 35 comes down to just a few steps. You can rent all these lenses for cheap: use them for a bit and see how they feel.

I think of those sample photos where it shows the different focal lengths and the field of view of each.  It seems like nothing.  Yet in use, it seems a much bigger difference.  For me, I haven't found the need to try a FL between 23 and 33, but those two seem like distinctly different choices.  I think you have to get a feel for the difference.  If you want more background info go wide, more detail close up go tighter.
