X-Pro 2 Video and WiFi: flickering video

Recommended Posts

EDIT: Solved (root cause banding due to crappy App), see post #5, http://www.fuji-x-forum.com/topic/3290-x-pro-2-video-and-wifi-flickering-video/?do=findComment&comment=29803

Hi everybody

I did some experiments with video today, as I did have some weird effects when I tried video the last time...

It seems that Video works fine when you start it directly on the camera and the WiFi is turned off. When I started video via the Fuji App from a phone connected by WiFi (using it as a remote release), the video was exceptionally badly flickering (and half the size only, it seems to do full 1920x1080 without wifi, 1280x720 with wifi.

Wifi on: https://youtu.be/ky0yDR2Cwxo

Wifi off: https://youtu.be/vhB49Xyz5V0

Did you experience something like that? Anything to get the video working?

Best regards

Nils

That is interesting to see that guys results with lights and shutter speed.  I found when doing my own casual tests that I couldn't really tell the difference in video quality when I shot at 1/30 or 1/60 on either my past Nikon D610 or my current Fuji XT1.  Since I was shooting in poorly lit areas, I used the 1/30 which gave me that extra stop of light I really needed and was still happy with the results.  Since then, I usually shoot at 1/30 and since my subject matter usually isn't moving too quickly, I have found it to work well.  I expect the speed of the movement of the subject could affect the results, and for casual, non-sports use ... I've been OK.

Seems you are right, it's not visible with sunlight. But why does the camera choose different settings when I start via the App? And how can I change these?

EDIT: Setting shutter speed to any manual value allows me to set the speed via the app (to values different from what the dial says, which confuses me). Setting the ISO to Auto via the App sets it automatically to the max of the Auto-Range, no automatic adjustment whatsoever. Setting it to a fixed value works. So: Setting everything (shutter speed, f-stop, iso and focus) you can actually use the WiFi triggered video, except that it is 720p despite the camera being set to 1080p.

Adjusting the shutter speed to slower values (1/30) removed the flickering, which was banding as milandro pointed out.

So, I hope for some KaiZen time for the app (and the corresponding part of the firmware) ...

Thanks for the help!

Happy shooting!

the problem is not the camera but the light source. fluorescent light is no good for these things, it’s the nature of the beast.

It was always like that even with normal filming. If you had a television in the shot you had to chose an obligatory shutter speed otherwise the picture of the screen shows bands.

The only thing is to use a shutter speed longer than the flickering or one light source that isn’t a form of intermittent light and you should have no problem. The Youtube video and the link are “ illuminating “.

It wasn't even flourescent lighting, but normal halogen lamps... what confused me is that the camera/app chooses different settings when you start with the App or with a button. I wasn't expecting this, so I thought it's something more serious. But thanks again for the help!
