If the lens don't have a clutch mecanism, setting the "M" mode (manual focus mode) in the X-T1 allows the use of the AF-L button to automatically focus (instant AF) AND lock the focus, but you still can use the focus ring to change the focus manually. It is more a way to instant AF in manual focus mode than to "lock" the focus. If the lens have a clutch mecanism, this procedure only works if the clutch mecanism is set in the AF position (the camera always in "M" mode); in this case, we only can focus using the AF-L button, and this is a very effective way of locking the focus because the focus ring can't move and the shutter don't focus in "M" mode. Hope this helps!

The Intstant Focus worked that way also in fw 4.0 (just without Lock), and I was using that all the time.

New thing in fw 4.20 - Lock is added to Instant Focus in M mode. If you keep holding AF-L after Instant Focus - Manual Ring still can not be used.

Also you can choose if Lock is applied to AF or AF+AE in this case.

Very good clarification point about the lens with clutch-focus ring BTW, thanks.

I guess this only works if instant AF method is set to AF-S

Yes, that's why listed conditions was important to mention:

Sure, it's also quite simple improvement, but it works in specific conditions.

CONDITIONS:

Lens has Autofocus ability

AF mode  = M

INSTANT AF SETTINGS = AF-S

AE-L/AF-L BUTTON SETTING = AE-L AF-L

And I'd add one more important condition here from JRphoto - if lens has focus-clutch ring, it should be in AF position.

For this feature you can also:

Lock focus by hold AF-L or single press (AE/AF-LOCK MODE)

I can't say now how it worked in firmware 4.20 because I already "upgraded" to 4.21, but regarding this "Instant AF Setting in manual focus" issue, independently of what one sets in AE/AF-LOCK MODE menu item ("AE&AF ON WHEN PRESSING" or "AE&AF ON/OFF SWITCH"), it works in the same way, locking only when pressing, and unlocking after releasing the AF-L button,  as if this menu item was ever in "AE&AF ON WHEN PRESSING". At least mine is working in this way now.

Awesome! Now we have great chance to clarify all the fw 4.20 changes comparing to 4.10 , as I don't plan to "upgrade".

Just checked what you wrote - you are absolutely right. No matter what is set in AE/AF-LOCK MODE the button only locks focus until release.

Looks like it only affects AE-L button in these conditions, but AF-L only locks Istant Focus until released.

That actually makes more sense. I can't imagine good use case where I want to keep the focus locked for long to prevent manual ring influence. I can just not use MF ring and it will stay.

Thanks for noticing this mistake.

Indeed, I agree. And you're welcome!
