  1. Since the RAW data would be identical, you could do the same processing in a RAW converter. Of course, you'd have to lower or raise exposure after import to normalize the brightness between the two different (but actually identical) RAWs, but apart from that, the processing would be identical. We are doing this all the time to demonstrate how the DR function works.

  3. Iridient offers the Extreme Highlight Recovery slider. As mentioned before, it works very much like the DR function of the camera, using a similar tone-mapping scheme. Of course, you need a RAW with DR200%/DR400% to retrieve the highlights. LR is pretty good at recovering highlights that aren't in the RAW (but Photo Ninja is even better most of the time). The thing with LR is its use of adaptive tone-mapping, which may deliver nice results (especially for landscapes), but simply doesn't match the mechanism used bei Fuji's built-in RAW converter.

  5. Didn't notice this difference in my test, X-T10 and X-T1. However, Fuji says that ES uses different shutter speeds than MS (despite what's indicated), so there may be differences. Since ES JPEGs and RAWs tend to be 0.1 EV brighter, that would indicate a longer SS, hence actually better shadow DR for ES shots. Sadly, Fuji did not indicate in which direction the exposures differ.

  8. Well, then get one. I actually like its warmer color temperature. That came in very handy for wedding party shots on the dance floor.
  9. Nothing gets more complicated with firmware 4. Actually, it gets simpler as MACRO is gone, so less thinking and less button pressing. And no more forgetting to exit macro mode after shooting close-ups. Apart from that, everything can be used like firmware 3. Everything. Nobody needs to use any of the new modes, one can simply forget about them. I often do. The old Single Point AF (aka Area AF) is still available, only faster and more reliable. Which tends to be a good thing for most people.

  11. HSS should be easy to implement via firmware. It's already there technically, as the Nissin i40 works with HSS in manual mode. However, you need a strong flash for HSS, and since Fuji still has to provide new (stronger) flash hardware, the software apparently has to wait until the hardware announcement. Fuji wants to sell Fuji flashes, not Nissin flashes after all.
  12. I'm not sure that MFT is dying. Their sales numbers are still solid. Nikon's 1" system may be short-lived, though. I haven't read much about it lately, especially wrt new lenses. Lenses are the center of every camera system.
  13. The shadow slider has nothing to do with the DR function. DR function is about adding highlight DR, not shadow DR. The difference between DR100% and DR400% is like this in the JPEG: It's very hard (basically impossible) to get the right-hand image (colors, contrast, brightness levels) with LR from the RAW. It's much easier with Iridient Developer.
  14. You can always change the white balance after the fact. It may be worth exploring custom white balance before the fact, though, at least for those 20% of cases where AWB is off (or simply not meeting your taste or your vision of the scene). Or maybe use one of the WB presets after the fact...

  17. I already got some, but as I said, they are only half the story, as there is something going on in different RAW converters. So even though DR is perfectly the same in MS and ES (at least according to Tokyo), users may see differences based on using different RAW converters and pushing them literally over the limit.
  18. AF-C works perfectly with ES. Tracking in burst mode doesn't, but there is no "tracking in burst mode" button.
  19. Depends on how you set the TC in Iridient. Greenish shadows were also part of my LR CC tests with ES RAWs pushed +5 EV. It could be corrected by moving the Shadow Tint slider to +5 in the Camera Calibration. It's an interesting issue, I have already been in contact with the tech guys in Tokyo to understand it better, as it's easy to be mislead by thinking the camera is doing something "wrong" (like using 12 instead of 14 bits in ES), while it may indeed only be how the RAW converter is handling things. So I'm very glad the topic was brought it up, even though the conclusions are off. It's interesting, and I'll keep an eye on this.
  20. Since FD always "breaked" PDAF, I don't see the connection to firmware 4. Nothing changed here.
  21. It appears to be a Lightroom issue. There is almost no difference when pushing MS and ES in Iridient Developer. Oh, and we often use DR400% for portraits. It's part of our workshop schedule.
  22. RFC EX 2 has decent Fuji film simulations. I wrote a column comparing them. Since the DR function is automatically emulated, the look is mostly okay. Lightroom doesn't emulate the DR function, so results may be way off, and there are differences with shadow contrast and orange/yellow tones that turn red. Also, the blue sky can be off. The best Fuji simulations I know are the current v3.3 simulations for Iridient Developer. Plus, Iridient perfectly emulates the DR function, so the results will look quite similar. Colors may be a bit different, but that simply means that they may even be nicer. The Fuji sRGB simulations for Capture One Pro 8 are usable, too.

  24. You can use all 49 AF points in 5 sizes, that's a total of 245 different AF frame options in MF mode.
