As I commented somewhere else, since I thought of using a smaller bag for things not requiring me to take the whole of the lens panoply I bought a very small insert from Aliexpress for about $10 shipping included. Comes in many colours, mine is orange. It fits my Crumpler Weenie ( which I had already) and transforms it into a bag for a body and two lenses, at a pinch, maybe 3 ( the picture with all the dividers in makes you think that this is huge and it isn’t!)

...and they have done this from before some of us were even born ( the Kern Macro Switar above is ancient) , and unlike people talking the talk, lens makers know about lenses generally more than the rest of us. Macro is a relative concept let’s leave it to that.

I am staying with it, I don’t use AF-C. When the next firmware will come it will correct the problem. I don’t understand being “ proud” about the fact that Fuji provides free firmware updates. I understand being thankful about something that I receive “ for free” but proud? I understand of being proud of your kids and wife, your job or anything that you have achieved in life. I also understand about the proud owner of a Fujifilm camera but if someone gives me something I am, in the first place, thankful then when it is mine I might become proud of it. Kia, the brand of my car, organizes once a year a Kia day. I take my car there, they give me a cup of coffee and cake while I wait for them to check my car and make some small repairs ( change the windshield washer fluid or a burnt lamp) if needed, in the meantime I am there and I am browsing in the showroom with the new cars for sale, being told of the possibility to trade in my car and get a new one. They also used to give soup and presents before but they have now reduced the expenses I suppose due to some austerity. Nevertheless I am thankful of this customer care, I am proud of my Kia, but I am thankful for this act of customer care, an investment on their side, into making me feel a valued customer. They also send me a Kia magazine every so often. It is the way you market cars to people. Updating the camera firmware for free is as much a part of the marketing strategy as it is to provide a strap with the camera or a lens with soft cloth bag ( the more expensive lenses the cheaper ones don’t get this because this is not factored in their cheap price). Strictly speaking they could give you a camera and a lens without any of this and charge you for the strap and bag, but they elect to do this in the hope that this act of customer care would enhance the customer satisfaction. I’ve never used the original strap or the cloth bag of the lenses but I have them and I am happy to have had them. But they didn’t come for free. Nothing that a company does is free, someone always pays for it. Since no business can afford giving things for free, its cost is factored in the camera exactly like Fuji advertising costs are factored in the camera too. I regularly read the Fuji magazine and I am thankful for it and even read it and take part to the competition to win cameras or lenses. If one wins a camera or a lens, one receives it for free, and you are right one should be thankful, but the cost of that camera is born by all the Fuji buyers. But I digress. I would be happier if, in future, there would be less pressure on Fuji to release firmware only after it has been fully and completely tested. The sequence of events that I described before tells me that the camera firmware was not ready the date that they had said it was going to be ready ( hence Fuji USA saying that the firmware would not be released the 17th) but the customer’s pressure was so big that they decided to release it all the same in the hope that everything was ok and then it wasn’t. Better late & safe than sorry. The license agreement says what you wrote because this is a standard disclaimer because, if by installing this software something goes wrong they are not responsible for the damage that it could have happened. It is very fortunate that this can be simply helped with taking out the battery and resetting the camera but it could have been worse and now you could have been sitting with your pride and joy and a camera which was locked shut just on Xmas day, with the Fuji repair shop closed and your kids opening presents in a ceremony that you might not have been able to photograph. That, your family and kids, you can absolutely be proud of. Be thankful to Fuji and the fortunate fate that our cameras all still work. But be even more thankful of health, serenity and prosperity which I wish for all of you. Be well!

since drsnake has replaced the screws he can answer this. Hol long is the thread of the screws? If the thread is very short and all it takes is a couple of turns to tighten the screw to the end then this might be too little if you shake and rattle the camera a lot. The fact that the screws under my camera are firmly in place might be due to carrying the camera in a bag and always with a grip attached to the body by means of the “ tripod” screw, so my guess is that this could have been preventing any vibrations. As for the loctite. Loctite threadlocker, as remarked above, comes in many types and it hardens into a substance that is more or less resistant or brittle. Loctite purple or 222 is supposed to be the least resistant to being removed, this means that by using some force and a tool one should be able to remove the seal. However this might void your guarantee. I’ve used a similar product to lock my Lolumina soft shutter release. The traditional method before loctite was introduced was to use a tiny drop of nail varnish ( with a pin) on the thread of a screw then tighten, this would work pretty much the same as loctite does ( and be very much cheaper) but the downside is that it’s resistance to being removed is an unknown quantity unless you have experience with a particular brand.

semantics. The new firmware overwrites the new one with a version of the old one, in practice, uninstalling it. But yes, if you like it better that way... Are all the dots now firmly and positively on all the i’s?

I am not putting down anything or anyone, I am just saying that this will surely put an ding into their track record. If you think otherwise, it is your prerogative to differ. Since this bug was not found ages after the firmware release, and it wasn’t hidden in a minor deep menu performing a function which nobody uses , I think that this means, in my book ( obviously a different book that yours) that it could and indeed should have been eas-y(ier) to spot during the trial phase. One more consideration, hasting or being hasted into doing things is never a good thing. Perhaps, being put under pressure from customers expecting firmware updates, updated that at this point some particularly needy customers are vociferously demanding rather then thankfully welcoming ( and one should question how wise this was to create this level of expectation among the customers... Things like this can backfire. As we’ve already seen from the wave of hostility which quickly arose (although now seems to be quiescent ) among the ranks of a part of the Fuji users after the lack of X-E2 firmware updating, following the introduction of the X-T10 and introduction firmware 4.0 for the X-T1, an update that the X-E2 has yet to receive... . Although that update (or another?), we were told, should now come in January 2016... therefore after a a long, long testing time... ) Who knows.. Fuji might have been mobbed by the high expectations into releasing this firmware before having the chance to fully test it. Remember the fact that first the date was set , then it was declared that the software wasn’t yet ready and would have been delayed, then it was released on time ( when it probably shouldn’t) because of not disappointing the people who had been promised a date already and then it was pulled back because there was a problem. I know a proverb saying: “ The hasty cat delivers a litter of blind kittens"

everything happens but with the introduction of a new firmware of a camera I would at least expect that they had tested it with several people before introduction date and testing all the functions of one camera alone,. However many they are it involves a limited amount of operations and permutations, this is nowhere near the complications of a computer OS! Also they made modifications to precisely the CL mode to enable flash bursts if there was anything that had to be tested very much and well would have been precisely that! Again it is not what happened but the fact that I might no longer trust the firmware updates tout court, since there is no guarantee that, like this bug, there wouldn’t be some other problem. What about what another member got when he tried to download the update at work and he was told by a probably to sensitive firewall that the file contained a virus? I dismissed it as a freak event due to the firewall being set too “ high”, so to speak, but once the trust receives some damage ( despite the immediate action) and generates suspicion, it is difficult to re-establish it.

“ We have found a malfunction in the firmware ver.4.20 launched on December 17 2015, which rarely causes freeze when shooting in AF-C mode. So we will suspend the disclosure of this firmware right away. We apologize for your inconvenience which this may cause. We will post an upgraded firmware around the end of January 2016 to solve it. As a tentative solution for customers who have upgraded their cameras to firmware ver.4.20, we have prepared the new firmware version of 4.21 whose functions are same as the previous version of 4.10. Please update your cameras to ver.4.21 to avoid the malfunction...." Positively the last time ever that I upgrade a firmware without waiting for the others to discover all the malfunctions ( how to trust that this patch would not cause any other problem? It comes from the same people who told us to upgrade with co nfidence in the first place! ). This was NOT a beta version, nor was there a contractual obligation to meet a certain deadline. I am very surprised too but also disappointed.

yesterday I told a friend ( my former business partner in a photographic studio which we had together years ago) about this thread and he burst in laughter at the suggestion that a macro lens is defined by being able to reach 1:1 and , I am quoting, he said : “ these folks have never heard of medium format? How about the Pentax 135mm macro of our 6 x7? A 1:3 lens " Yes, I know, ancient lens.

Fuji is about all the dials! That’s what attracted me and ultimately made me buy few Fuji cameras. If Fuji camera would have operated only by menus I would have bought one. If you want a camera without dials and buttons, that camera is not a Fuji!

I have found my own solution for this “ problem” albeit a very complex one.

I am afraid that you are not considering a few important things. The shipping charges from Malaysia + the 21% VAT ( applied on top of the price+ shipping) + the forwarding through cusotms fee of the post or courier would vanify any advantage. International Fuji guarantee is recognized for one year instead of two but again, it would be pointless for other reasons. Besides any rebates or cash-backs only ever apply to residents. I’ll wait, sooner or later they will discount it here too.

yes, it looks like a camera

is not the amount of pixels but what they do.

At this time of the year, with the new year approaching, there is a solid, millenary tradition of predictions for the coming year. Traditionally this was the territory of the astrologers who, looking at the stars were able to predict (or so they thought) the future. Nowadays a new generation of “ augures “ ( the Roman priest who, by examining the entrails of the sacrificed birds, pretended to predict the future), people whom look at the entrails of their old camera and make predictions on how the new one will be. Amazing!

since that picture above I’ve rearranged my lens kit. I have sold the 10-24 and the 35 and bought the 12mm samyang and the 18-55. So, now, I find myself sometimes wanting to go out with one small bag alone containing one lens or two at most because I might not need the 12 or the 8mm fish eye. I’ve had a look around in the small leather bag market segment and found a few to my liking ( the fuji bag by the way is not bad at all, just small) but wasn’t prepared to spend the money that bags command these days (and , as I said Jill.E has considerably upped their prices!). So I have considered to use something which I have already ( best way to save money is not buying anything new) . Years ago I have bought a bag made by Crumpler ( but could be any other messenger bag really) de Weenie model and have used as a “ messenger" bag for general purposes. In order to re-purpose this bag into a photographic one I’ve bought an insert on line ( I am still waiting for it) which will add some padding and help dividing the space allowing me to safely carry one body and two lenses. But really this is a concept that can be applied to any bag and that’s why giving out names has little purpose. When giving any type of advise I’d rather share the process which brought me to chose for a particular solution rather than saying buy this that or the other because at your end you might not always have the same thing available to me but you might apply the thinking process to your particular situation and what’s available to you. You can look around the house and see what you’ve got or perhaps go to a thrift store and see what there is in the bag department. You may find something really nice or stylish (whatever your style is) and re-purpose it by adding ( or subtracting) things. A new insert with dividers will cost you a small amount of money, unless you decide to buy one from a famous brand. You can still bring something like this with you in a bigger bag when you travel and use it locally or just the times that you don’t need all you have with you. The large leather bag I’ve shown above for example, has the capability to hold my camera and all my lenses but still has enough space for a number of extra things ( like a couple of change of clothes and my medicines, things I always take with me in a bag that I will bring as a cabin bag when I fly because, as I said before, it has happened to me that my luggage was delayed or lost, like that time that I came back from Shanghai and my luggage was “ lost” .... they have found it one month later in the same airport where I had arrived and discovered that the bag was never lost in the first place but simply arrived late and was then misplaced... when they found it it was to sow me that it wasn’t there... and there it was!).

dictionaries report what people say, if enough people say the wrong thing over and over again dictionaries will take the definition and report its use among people, right or wrong. Languages are full of inconsistencies and arbitrary choices. Next time we meet Johan we will have a conversation about this.

it would cost a more to make anything out of standard and for any minority market. They do it with the IR, and it cost about $2,000, which is not so much more, but it cost more

I took off the camera from the grip to check the screws. One of them had probably lost a bit of the black paint covering the head because of the screw of the grip but none were lose or damaged or missing. I checked the tension they were all as tight as need or could be.
-
I don’t know what type of screw this is or their exact size ( by the way, mine are covered by the grip that I use) but they don’t appear to be particularly rare or strange screws. I have a couple of boxes of small mechanical odds and ends salvaged from other defunct mechanical appliances for when this kind of thing happens. I am sure that you have something similar in one of your drawers. What from the situation looks like on the picture, it might be possible for you to try to pull back the plate and bring it back into alinement then I would try several small screws ( In Switzerland, the land of watchmaking small screws like these should be pretty common and I am sure that you know someone who works in fine mechanics somewhere) and I don’t think that they would use anything that isn’t metric. Good Luck.

The aperture ring of my copy of this lens works fine performing 1/3 stop intervals throughout the range. Warranties vary throughout the world. In the EU, with the possible exception of the UK alone ( but really it shouldn’t) there is a mandatory minimum of 24months ( in the Netherlands, theoretically guarantees are for as long as it is reasonable to expect that a product will perform its useful function) but in many cases around the world the warrantee is only limited to 12 months for body and lenses.

well, the at least 3 of the 4 screws (one looks like it is still there) are no longer there to hold the plate that appears to have been has rotating or has shifted sideways, or so it appears to me from the picture. This cannot have happened without something which has physically removed the screws. Besides, the remaining screw appearing in your picture appears to be bronze or brass color, while the original screws are black. Something has screwed 3 or 4 screws off. Alternatively the peak design screw has pushed the plate from the bottom plate and dislodged it ripping the 4 screws off. Either way, short of taking the blame for something that happened outside of their responsibility, this could have not happened because of Fuji not placing the screws there. Something or somebody has removed the screws or ripped them off their position. I am afraid that this might be all be caused but that peak design thing. I would be most surprised if they would take responsibility for something like this.
