Lens Advice Please

Well, to each his own.

I have never used the novoflex on a modern digital camera but I did use it on an analog camera, hand held and no stabilization, they were usable and much used (many sport photographers used them) in the late ‘70

These guys ( from a German Nikon site) seem to like them enough to use them and in so far as I can tell, use them very well in some case even with a focal multiplier (2 x ). ( if you read German)

Feast your eyes on the pictures here! I am sorry that I cannot link them in this page because the system won’t allow me to do that!

Hi!

I have a X-T1 and a nikkor 300mm f/4.5 ED-IF lens and I use a K&F concept adapter found on amazon for few weeks.

Here is a sample on flickr :

Photos of the falcon and great horned owl are straight of the camera jpeg. The others were a bit cooked on lightroom (cropped and some adjustments).

This lens weight less than one kilogram and I shoot handheld. I choose this lens because a good lens stays a good lens : it is free of distorsion but can bring some CA in weird lighting, especially on distant white small objects under strong light (nothing insuppressible).

It can do the job that for sure. Results depends on me and I try to improve my focus technique. Sometimes, I miss some shots because my eye is distracted by red dots in the EVF when the switch is on MF.

I can shoot to 2.5meter to infinity, but the closer I am better result I get.

I also own a TC-14B converter, which gives me a 420mm lens. I feel uncomfortable with it, because images are less sharper. With no tripod and stabilisation it is too shaky and frustrating at the end of the day.

I am thinking about adding some grip on the camera because of this lens. For now, I imagine taking a J.B. camera designs wood grip.

I once did a comparison between upscaling an image from a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L lens to the equivalent taken with various old manual focus 400mm and 500mm lenses. The Canon lens produced better images.

I suspect the same will be when comparing the FUJINON 55-200mm with old lenses.

  • 4 weeks later...

The Nikon 300 4.5 AI-s looks like a good option. However, I am not a nikon knowledgeable person. What is the difference between  the AI-s and say an ED version. I see nikon made a 300 f4.0 D ED lens. Will this work with the nikon-fuji converter?

And that leads to the suggestion about the sigma - I see there are other sigmas "x" -400mm. They can be obtained in nikon or canon mount. 1. would they also be able to be manually focussed (that is not a problem - I am expecting to do this) and 2. is it better to get them in the nikon mount with nikon - fuji adapter or canon mount with canon - fuji adapter?

Thanks for the advice.

In the mean time, could anyone start a fuji rumour that the fuji XF 100 - 400 is to be released by the end of 2015 AND MAKE IT HAPPEN?

Cheers,

Mark

Nikon AI-S lenses are simply lenses with a slightly different bayonet than other types, ED refers to low dispersion lens elements so the two terms don’t have much to do with one another.

The 300 f 4.5 en the 300 f 4 are different lenses, (both can be used with a Fuji by means of adapters )

    • The Tentacle Sync Timecode tool is the one I tried. I couldn't get it to work. But that is probably my fault, not the software. I seemed to get a file, but I couldn't turn it into anything meaningful.
    • I am glad to read you are able to get this up and running. Pretty much as long as you connect the camera and turn it on and wait a few moments for the computer to register the connection, you can then use Image Capture (which actually is a very decent program with a lot of options for transferring images from cameras to the computer) or Lightroom or other programs to move the images to your library. There are some drawbacks; connecting to the computer while it is in sleep mode will waste your time, the connection will not get recognized— you will have to unplug the camera, wake the computer and start over. Trying to connect while the screen saver is running may work, it may not, often not. If the computer goes into screen saver mode while the camera is connected and sitting idle, it usually stays connected when coming back out of screen saver, but if the computer mputer goes into sleep mode, the connection gets dropped and you have to unplug it and start over. I suggested having the camera turned off while connecting, this is to lower the possibility of static electricity discharges frying either the camera or the computer or both. A lot of times you can connect while the camera is turned on, but not always, sometimes you have to unplug, turn it off, reconnect and turn it back on. A lot of this comes from Apple’s approaches towards keeping USB devices from hijacking your computer, some is just hubris and some is from the vagaries of chance. p.s. Your laptop should be able to connect to the camera.
    • Hi Chas, I am just fallen into the rabbit hole of investigating how to upgrade my X-T4's video sound... Loving the idea of time code sync, I am now quite concerned that the X-T4 doesn't support it, although I have already seen different statements on the net, like here:  https://youtu.be/xja27RmvbhE?si=hIch3Tu_MH_pWSBH&t=571 I have to admit, this guy's "explanation" gets quite confusing in his further discourse ...:) BUT, as you wrote that you use Tentacle Sync for Windows!, did you also try with their windows-only software "Time Code Tool" which you find here?: https://tentaclesync.com/timecode-tool   Would love to here if you found a workaround with the XT4 Best, Simon
    • It occurred sometime when I focus. It is not silent
    • This is the video for the focusing sound. Anyone can help?🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻thanks a lot IMG_3226.mov
