Autofocus Problems on X-Processor 5 Cameras After Firmware U

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out to see if anyone else is experiencing the same issue.

I own a Fujifilm X-S20 and recently updated the firmware to version 3.10, which includes changes to the AF algorithm. Since the update, I’ve been having major autofocus issues with my Tamron 18-300mm lens – the camera often struggles to focus, even on static subjects.

What’s strange is that the same lens works perfectly on my older X-S10, which hasn’t received any similar AF updates (X-Processor 4). So this clearly seems to be a compatibility issue introduced with the latest AF algorithm changes in X-Processor 5 cameras.

I’ve confirmed this across multiple bodies:

  • X-S20 – firmware 3.10 – autofocus issues

  • X-T5 – firmware 4.10 – same problem

  • X-H2 – firmware 5.10 – includes the same AF update

  • X-H2S – firmware 7.10 – also mentions AF revision

  • X-T50 – firmware 1.10 – same story

  • X100VI (X-M5) – most likely shipped with the new AF system pre-installed

In contrast, cameras with X-Processor 4 (like the X-S10 and X-T4) still work flawlessly with the same lens. That pretty much confirms the issue lies in the updated AF logic, not the hardware itself.

My partner owns an X-H2 and is now hesitant to update the firmware because of how badly my X-S20 now performs. We’ve both contacted Tamron and Fujifilm support, but haven’t received any real solution so far.

Is anyone else dealing with this? Have you found a workaround or received any response from either company?

If Tamron doesn’t release a firmware update for this lens, it may become unusable on the latest Fuji bodies — which is incredibly frustrating.

Tamron have a page that states there may not be full operational compatibility with a long list of Fuji X cameras.

Some of the Fuji X cameras you list have had more recent firmware versions, but not your X-S20.

Thanks for your reply, but I’m already aware of those links.
The issue I’m reporting is not about general compatibility or outdated firmware on the lens. The Tamron lens worked perfectly with older Fuji bodies like the X-S10 and X-T4.

The problem started only after Fujifilm introduced changes to the autofocus algorithm in the latest firmware updates for X-Processor 5 cameras (like the X-S20, X-T5, X-H2, etc.). This is a recent issue and it’s unrelated to Tamron’s last firmware update in 2022 — which is exactly why I'm trying to raise awareness and push for a new update.

I’ve tested the lens across multiple bodies and firmware versions — this is not a one-off issue, but a clear compatibility gap created by recent Fuji firmware updates. Tamron simply needs to update their lens firmware accordingly.

I'm torn between a Nikon Zf, Nikon Z5ii, and an XT-5 because all fall in similar price range. I'm gravitating towards the XT-5 for the form factor and lens choices, but the autofocus issues I keep hearing is holding me back. So would like to know more from real users on your experiences?

My use case: Street, and Landscape photography.

The X-T5 is fine for that sort of use with the current firmware, use it in AF-S and either a single AF point or a small zone. It's in AF-C that the issues are more apparent.

Hi, just got a Tamron 18-300m yesterday and found this forum.

It worked well on my X-T2. On the X-T4 it would not focus between 60-299mm.

I bought if for an Iceland trip and was mad. Happily i had some hope after reading this page, I have changed the settings to use a Zone AF and turned off face detection. It now focuses on the X-T4. Both lens and X-T4 are on the latest firmware.

Just joined the forum, not sure if this is the best thread to ask on, I searched. 

The Tamson 18-300mm seems very unstable at 300mm, I know its long, are you guys using a tripod at that length for stability?

I am planning on taking it to iceland for tele shots, but if its this unstable at 300mm, i will have to get a lens collar and another tripod for it to get sharp images.

Does anyone have any experience / advice in the field with this lens? My old Canon 70-300mm IS lens seemed more stable hand held. 

I dont want to come back from Iceland after using it and binning all the shots from it due to the IS not being great handheld.

Update, seems the focus went on each body again. 
turning it of and on again on the xT2, and it’s working again. 
I  wonder if it cannot handle a focus mode switch? Or some other setting changes while it is on?

Did anyone check this? 
obviously it’s not acceptable, but it seems to be linked to some change during use. If I work it out, at least I can mitigate its problems.

      Hi, I'm researching a gimbal to get someone as a present & they use a Fuji XS-10. I did a quick search of previous threads on gimbals but all of them seem to either get no replies or spammed by a link to an Amazon list. I'd appreciate any comments from folks who've actually used specific gimbals with the XS-10. I'm aware that some, such as certain models from Zhiyun, DJI & FeiyuTech either don't say that they are fully compatible with the XS-10 but other sites say they do work ok but some functions don't. It's quite difficult to work out which functions work & which don't. Thanks.

      This was snapped during a lunch.  Total shooting time—a few seconds. We so often read that a proper "portrait" should be snapped with a longer than normal lens, a low ISO to get lots of detail, and have a soft light held up above the head, and slightly to the side. The key, in my opinion, is always carry a camera.  Have your camera available to capture candid, authentic photographs.  Available light, no posing.   This portrait used 2000 ISO, the lens wide open at f4, and 1/100 sec. to stop any movement.  I didn't even take time to compose—I just snapped.  I leave the "Face Detection" on unless I'm photographing a landscape or subject other than a person. The GFX100RF has the equivalent of a 28mm lens.  The large sensor renders fine detail even at fairly high ISO ratings.  And the drawing of the lens is just perfect in my opinion.  It was set to B & W, with slightly reduced sharpness and clarity (set in-camera).  Ideal for "portraits."  Now, for some subjects I will likely increase the sharpness and clarity to the normal setting.  The camera is new, and I'm still experimenting with it.

      Back on page three of this thread is an image and mention of those mythological and astronomical twins, Castor and Pollux. They are back for your viewing pleasure in the night sky with Jupiter joining them, an added bonus this year. At least for those stargazing in the Northern Hemisphere anyway. For right now, you will need to wait until late at night, Very Late. or Very Early in the morning if your clock works that way. A little after midnight. Look a little to the left of Orion and there these three will be forming an arc.

      Procyon is along for the arc ride... As long as the clouds are not too much, the arc is visible even in cloudy, light polluted skies like the one shown here. This is the equivalent of a just almost but not quite ten minutes stars exposure with a five seconds clouds exposure.
