I know that most of you are professionals, but I am not, so I'm hoping someone will help me out with what I think might be simple problems.

First of all, I'm on a cruise ship at the beginning of a 4-month trip so I don't have access to a lot of help.  I have an XT-1, update 4.2, that I can't get to go into flash mode.  I have the EF-X8 and EF-X20.  I've consulted the manual and Phillips' Complete Guide.  The camera is not on silent mode, but the flash won't come on.  What am I doing wrong?

While I was trying to get this working I did what I swore I'd never do again:  I pushed the view mode button.  As always, disaster.  The green level went into the eye sensor and I can't get it to go back to the LCD screen.  Is there some trick I'm missing?

Sorry for not knowing enough to get into the OVF, EVF war, but I would like to take some photos.

Thanks to anyone who replies.

First thing first, make sure you are on Mechanical Shutter, not Mechanical + Electronic.

Second point, try to be on single shot and make sure the speed doesn't go higher than 1/180, turn the dial and block it there if needed.

As for the view mode, just press it again and it will be back on the back LCD instead of the view finder.

Thank you!  Mechanical shutter worked.  I got a flash.  But I have pushed the view mode button a hundred times, changed the level in the menu at every push, trying to get the level back on the screen, but no luck.

This is very kind of you to help with this simple problem.

Just to be certain, are you using the regular eye cup or the long one ?

The default one that comes with the X-T1 has a nasty habit of moving around and can sit in front of the eye sensor, which makes your camera thinks your eye is over there.

It happened to me a couple of times before I noticed it and pushed the eye cup into the socket and kinda sorted out the issue.

Well, I think it has nothing to do with the viewmode. When in shooting mode, push DISP/BACK button and set the display to CUSTOM (this justify the "DISP" in DISP/BACK).

(the options are INFO DISPLAY,  STANDARD, INFORMATION OFF, CUSTOM, and DUAL)

Whoever you are, I love you!  Thank you.  It worked.

Now if I could only fix the other 2 problems that have started as soon as I got out of the US.  The 18-135 lens makes round corners at 18.  And the focus assist button quit working.

But thank you for the level!!!

The FOCUS ASSIST button doesn't work in two conditions: 1) if you're shooting in focus mode "C" (three options, lever in camera lower front: "S", "C", "M"); 2) When menu item AUTOFOCUS SETTING -> PRE-AF is "ON".

I must have accidently turned to C.  I wish I could put you in a bottle and carry you in my camera bag.  Thank you so very, very much!!!

Haha, very funny, but you don't need to: I'll be around trying to help whenever I feel I can. Good cruise and photos to you! :)
