GilBarib got a reaction from PeterWL in Fuji-X Sport: X-T2 and Pro Cycling at the UCI World Tour's Grand Prix de Québec
    Hi

    Thanks !
You're right about the X-T1, Ive shot a pro cycling criterium this summer, the T1 + XF50-140 combo did quite good: https://flic.kr/s/aHskywHsoS

First, I shot the whole event on boost, did not even try the regular mode yet,  the T2 is a lot really a lot more snappier, not in the same class at all.
Startup, AF acquisition, AFC tracking, shot to shot, Ch at 11 fps, EVF, everything is on steroids compared to the T1.
Also, important to me is the bigger PDAF area coverage, it is a lot less limiting, finally letting you compose more freely and the focus joystick makes it very easy to access all these AF points.
The 24 mp are very nice for cropping compare to the 16 mp, kind of useful for sport pictures where you can't control as much your framing.

Did I mention fast ? Very fast !

This was my first outing with the T2 and the overall speed of the little beast just amazed me,  I'm really looking forward to use it in situation where the T1 would struggled: indoor sports and the likes.
But that being said, I'm keeping mine as second body, now my old X-E1 can finally retire in a museum !

    Hope it helps

Here's some motorcycle road racing images from yesterday. X-T1 with 50-140/2.8 and 1.4X teleconverter. American Federation of Motorcyclists (aka AFM) club race at Sonoma Raceway, September 4, 2016, Sonoma, CA, USA. The "ole warhorse" X-T1 can still deliver the goods...

    Hi !

While looking for something sporty to shoot yesterday morning, I found out  that we had here in Québec City a Gaelic Football Team and that they were hosting the Eastern Canada 2016 Tournament.
Nice I though, but may all the Irish readers of this post please forgive my total ignorance, but before yesterday I had never heard of the sport, in fact I had to look it up on Wikipedia to figure it out !

The Canadian league is still quite small and the sport not so well known here, really nothing compare to the popularity it has in Ireland. So no big crowds and some
very nice access for the photographers, I ended up spending the whole day there.

They also had a demonstration match of hurling too, now that's a super rapid sport, this little ball really does flies fast and far, quite hard to keep up with it at first.

    Oh yeah, the technical details:
    X-T1 + XF50-140 +XF1.4TC,
    Drive on CH (8 fps),
    AFC,
    Focus on Zone (3x3 grid),
    RAW, LR6.6.1 + NIK

We had a cycle race in town the other evening and I wanted to grab a few images using the XPro2+16-55mm.

My intention was to capture some sharp images and also some images with movement and blur.

I am more than happy with camera performance and the results - they are what I wanted.

It has been just few days since I left Rio and I had a day to recharge my batteries (my own one and also all of my Fuji ones) and now I'm shooting Summer Biathlon World Championships in southern Estonia. Fujifilm Estonia is again helping me and gave me one X-T2 with battery booster for the event (first camera here in Estonia) and let me keep X-Pro2 also which I had with me at the Olympics. So now I can compare them side-by-side and show you pictures from both cameras. When I have time, I will post my first remarks. After first day at least I can say that X-T2 suits my style much better. Bigger EVF, battery booster (which really boosts the camera) and faster AF are the first things to mark down, where X-T2 is kicking X-Pro2s butt

    Hi !

Here's a few pics of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup from last week-end at the Mont Sainte-Anne ski resort in Québec, Canada.
It was the 26th edition of the Velirium, a great event that brings all of the best riders from around the world to compete on very technical and steep 2.9km course. The winner did it in under 4 minutes, so at a average speed of 43.5 km/hr but in some section of the course they reach top of 80 km/hr....they are fast !
My X-T1 and XF 50-140 combo did quite good, even with the riders coming out of shaded area into the bright sun, lost frames from AF errors was under 10 %, just about the same as the number of frame lost because of framing errors when trying to follow the riders with the EVF.
I know I'm going to love my X-T2

GilBarib got a reaction from Fred G. Unn in X-T1 and Sports: What settings get the best results?
    Hi Mike !

I gave a look at your web site, nice !!!
What lenses are you using on your X-T1 ?

Here is a copy/paste of my X-T1 settings for sports from a previous post:
    High Performance Mode is On,
    Pre AF is On,
AF-Mode mostly on Zone, 5x3 grid or 3x3, and only the central PDAF points are used, I'll use Single Point if the subject is a busy pack of athletes to keep the AF from jumping from one to the other, it really depends on de type of sport. I dont use Wide, since it uses the slower CDAF points
Release/Focus Priority is set to Focus (both for Af-S and Af-C)
    Face detection = Off
    Eye detection = Off
    Shutter on MS only.
AF is on Continuous and the Drive Mode is on CH (8fps),
My EVF is set to Normal, not Full
LMO is On (even if I'm shooting RAW only)
OIS at Off most of the time since I'm shooting with SS usually above 1/500 of a second, OIS at On (mode 1) would give me a stabilized view in the EVF, but I find it induce a little lag when trying to quickly center the subject in the af zone (that little white cross in the middle of your Zone or the Single point square)
I'm shooting RAW only with a 300mb/sec 64gb SD UHS II, no problems with the buffer.
I always aim and follow the subject, half-pressing the shutter while tracking it, keeping the white cross in the middle of the Zone on target, I'll then fire a short burst when the subject is close to the optimum distance/spot/framing.
The hard part is aiming during the black out, practice and anticipation is the key!
Here is a important trick to get the best possible results: dont let the lens "wonder around"[
I got PRE-AF at on, so the X-T1 and XF50-140 are always trying to focus, if I take my eyes off the EVF and let the camera point to the ground it is going to focus there.
When I'll lift it to my eyes to quickly take a shot it is going to have to focus from somewhere like one or two meters to 10 meters (where my subject is), same goes with far-away backgrounds, dont let it go there!
Make sure it's always around the right focus distance, aim at something close to your optimum spot or the place were you'll start your burst, the ground, something on the side of the tracks.
By doing this, acquisition time will be faster and in my experience once the X-T1 gets tracking on a subject it won't let go too easily.

So for race type sports like MTB or Skiing I always aim at where the subject is going to come into the frame, a curve / bump/ feature by the path the subject should follow.
For more random sports like soccer or football it is better to follow the action in the EVS while half-pressing the shutter.
The AF system on the Fuji likes to have a subject with good contrast too, I've shot enough speed skaters to notice a slight difference of performance depending on the patterns and color of the bodysuit (all black suits being the worst). With the Single Point AF make sure the AF box size is: as big as possible but cover only the subject.   One last thing I kind of feel that the XF50-140 is a big part of the equation too...makes a difference, I did not try it but the XF90mm with it's quad Linear Motors seems good from the result I've seen.   The Flickr Fuji-X Sport and Action Group: https://flic.kr/g/quLzW My Album of AFC Tracking examples on Flickr: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjVwSDVD   Good luck (and good light ! ) too you Gilles

GilBarib reacted to czechappleguy in XF200mmF2 Lens Rumors
The great thing about all of this talk about a 200mm f/2 is the fact that Fuji wants to "play ball" with the two big boys. If they add this lens and they also introduce the 33mm f/1.0 then they are completely ready to do battle and I think a lot more people will follow and help them achieve this.

I have shot pro Lacrosse and Hockey with both Canon and Nikon and when I first put the X-T1 in my hands about 3 or so years ago I hoped that some day soon we would be talking about exotic fast lenses and flagship cameras that could use those lenses perfectly.

Well that day is getting closer. Fuji is doing what the other two big boys aren't doing...listening to it's customers and putting out products for the most part of what we want. We are asking, they are giving.

It's not the other way around...

Two very large groups thought were left out of the picture up to this point. The birding, and sports photographers. When the X-T1 was introduced and released it had pretty good focus but not to the levels of the Pro DSLR's by Canikon. When firmware update 4.0 came out it made the X-T1 an even better camera. With is 8fps speed it also gave us more value because it was a sub $2000 camera and not many other cameras we're out there that could do a lot of the same capabilities (definately not in Nikon's world).

Heck Nikon just finally introduced the D750 to replace its ancient 8 year old model D700.

Now with the release of the X-Pro2. One of it's many nice features, the small joystick on the back allows us to move the focus points around as quick as the high priced DSLR's which has improved the capabilities of a camera that not only did the two left out groups of photographers want, but everyone will benefit from.

So now we are getting whiffs of rumors about the longer glass and I am glad that they are talking about it because it's a need that will really bring Fuji up to the table with the big boys.

Canon and Nikon don't want Fuji at that table because they have always been the only ones sitting there.

When they introduced and released the 50-140 Fuji fans were happy. When they introduced and released the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 Fuji fans got even happier. "When" not if Fuji releases the 200mm f/2 lens I will be there waiting to swipe my CC with no hesitation.

What that also means is they will release a 300mm f/2.8, and then the 400mm f/2.8 and again you will probably see me swiping my CC for the 400mm f/2.8 because it probably by that time will have the X-T3 or X-Pro3 camera body to be attached to the back end of it.

At that point you will also see me at the X in Minneapolis shooting for the NHL so come tap me on the shoulder and ask me questions about if I like the setup!

GilBarib got a reaction from elmacus in X-T1 and Sports: What settings get the best results?

    Hi !

I went to one of the local ski center last Saturday with my X-T1 and XF50-140 + XF1.4TC combo to shoot some university level FIS sanction Slalom race (they are fast!).  There was also a Free Style event on the slope right by the slalom course so I was able to get a few SIF ( Skiers In Flight) pics as well.
