Spain in September. My turn to ask advice on travel kit.
Tom H. replied to marcelo_valente's topic in General Discussion
18-55 35 12 All the rest I'd leave at home. With thus setup you have 2 good portrait lenses, a wide angle, an excellent walkaround lens and a fast prime for after dark. -
Putting the new Fuji XF 16 1.4 to use. Love this lens, just what I needed for when the X100T doesn't give me the wide angle I need. Both shot with the X-T1, 16 1.4, manual speedlights via 60x60 softbox.

Some shots I did for the daughter of some folks whose house I sometimes use for shoots. She told me she fences, so I suggested doing something with that. Both shots taken with the X100T and generic manual speedlights. The colour one is a 60x60cm softbox and a reflector for fill. The b&w one a MagMod MagSphere and a MagGrid for harsh, directional light.

Nice use of natural light, Wampo. Lovely portrait.

Great off camera flash setup for X-T1
Tom H. replied to Antony's topic in Flash Photography with Fuji X
I use the Godox V850's, with their FT-16S remote trigger. Works great, I hate AA batteries, so the lithium cartridges give me excellent portability. They are sometimes a bit iffy, I find they drain quickly when not in use. So not great for people who are on the go for a few days without charger. Or people shooting a few images at the time. I use them mainly for portrait work in a controlled setting. I have four batteries, four speedlights and one trigger. I usually only have 2 lights in use, sometimes 3. So I always have at least one battery charging. That suits my needs just fine. I usually get 200-400 shots out of one battery, which is just fine for most uses. Although I must say that if given a choice now, I would probably go for the Cactus system. But no regrets so far with my Godox stuff. If now only Fuji would come with a great TTL system for more "on the move" work... -

DOWNLOAD NOW X-T1 Firmware 4.0 ! Share your first impression
Tom H. replied to Patrick FR's topic in Fuji X-T1 / Fuji X-T10
Well, the topic is called "share your first impression" for a reason, no? If it can't lock onto an eye at 60cm, on a static subject, in a very well lit room at noon, I'd call that anything but impressive. I shoot mostly portraits, if eye detect is that unreliable, for me, it's unusable. Tried again today on my wife, the 50-140 does ok, but still 60% of shots fail to detect an eye. On the 16 it's nearly 85% that don't... -
Yes, normal. Don't worry too much about it.

APS-C is good enough for most purposes. I too like to pixel peep, but don't kid yourself, in print you can hardly see the difference anymore... Sensors have just become that good nowadays. I too get GAS when I see the new A7R II specslist. But thinking of my old Canon lenses, I can't see myself going back to that size and weight anymore. I already felt the X-T1 +56/16 was too big for holiday purposes, and envied my wife taking the X100T every day... Now dynamic range and ISO performance, that's where still some nice work can be done...

Lovely shot. I find my X100T is very soft at f2 though, I rarely go below f2.8. Yours looks tack sharp though, nice.

Thanks! Good tip, it is indeed much better that way.

Danke schön!

An XF18-35 1.8 WR OIS, as fast all purpose lens. An updated 35 1.4 or 1.2, with WR and fast autofocus. Please, Mr. Fuji?

long travel combo advice - xt10 or xt1?
Tom H. replied to andrzejbe's topic in Fuji X-T1 / Fuji X-T10
My kit would be X-T1, 16-55 WR (or 18-135 WR) and one fast prime. The 35 is the best all purpose low light lens, the 18 in my mind is best for inconspicuous street shooting. Take at least 3 batteries, a few lens pen kits, at least a 16GB card a day and for the rest, try to travel light. I travel a lot, and my all year kit would be only an X100T with the TCL, or an X-T1 with a 16-55 and a fast prime. Never would I carry two bodies and I would try to limit lens switching as much as possible. Focus on experiences and people, the shots will follow :-) -

First impression of the face and eye detect features? Meh... Tried 30 selfies with the 16 1.4, only 2 shots detected my eye. Taken from close by, but far enough for it to focus. The rest remains to be seen. Continuous seems faster, but still nowhere near DSLR fast. Single AF point will remain my go to mode I guess for the time being. -
Naddan28, for a great lighting tutorial, check out One Light 2.0 by Zack Arias. Well worth the expense. Or check out Strobist 101 on strobist.com, they have a free pdf book.
