I have the 14mm f2.8, 23mm f2 and 18-55mm f2.8-4 and am looking for a lens longer than 23mm for pictures of family the members. The 23mm is great but I want another lens with a bit more compression.

56mm and 50-140mm are too expensive and too big.

60mm is too slow.

I was thinking 35mm but hesitate if it's not too close to 23mm.

Then there's 50mm f2 but I haven't used a 75mm equivalent before.

Generally the longer the lens, the less mobile I am and the more specialized and less flexible the lens becomes.

So it's either 35mm at the risk being redundant, or 50mm at the risk of being less usable.

What do people use for photographing family members (usually indoors) ?

If you have the 23mm, get the 50mm. They work great together (I could shoot most jobs with just those two lenses, and could be totally happy travelling with that setup). 50mm can be totally useable for upper body portraits indoors, and would be even more flexible dealing with small kids.

50 is a great focal lenght for family/children outdoors, too tight for indoors but you have the 23 f/2 for that.

I have the 35 and use it for both indoors and outdoors. Works great, a bit tight for indoors sometimes though.

I'd get the 50 if I were you as you already have the 23. Great combo

Have you tried the 60?

I've had it for a couple of weeks and have been surprised at its AF speed.

It's only slow at close focus.

We took the grand kids to the park on Sunday and out of about 150 shots only around 10 were either out of focus or had camera shake.
