The display button gives you several options for the viewfinder (and independently for the LCD).

I'm shooting in Aperture Priority but seem unable to display shooting info in eyepiece....I don't use the LCD to take photos

Thanks,  I don't really get why they would make similar cameras work differently... Even the older X-E3 worked with the double tap to reset

It was the same with the X-T30 - agree the quick press on the joystick is more convenient - one of the things that annoyed me with that camera. Later cameras (such as X-H2S, X100VI) have the press joystick to center option.
