X-T1 FW 4.0 BETA: I have it and share my findings soon ;)
heliosfan replied to Patrick FR's topic in Fuji X-T1 / Fuji X-T10
Being a Mac owner, I am well versed in the fanboyerisms. Oh well, Fuji fanboys seem to be in a different league altogether. Coming up with sinister conspiracy theories regarding Fuji and what they are thinking etc is just pure crazy talk. Can we just enjoy ourselves and go outside to take pictures? -

I normally don't care about theclock either, but I've been through 3-4 firmware versions without them adding such a basic functionality, then it just gets annoying. BTW I was more thinking about support for the mythical new remote (?) flash system /flashes that's coming and wasn't thinking HSS in particular. -

Let's hope they have time to add a 24 hr clock (do they really use am/pm in Japan???) , 3 step bracketing and a (proper) flash system before they call it a day. All possible w firmware updates only. 4.1 or 5.0? -
X-T1 FW 4.0 BETA: I have it and share my findings soon ;)

Hmmmm....I can see a potential problem when the official firmware is released. I don't think Fujifilm is prepared for angry forum members not being able to install it because of the leaked beta.... -
I agree, but since mirrorless cameras have their sensor exposed to the lens at all times, oil from aperture blades can really mess things up. Warning to all old lens lovers out there! Clean out the oldlube and re-lubricate your helicoid with a modern grease that hopefully won't separate....

Love Your Fujifilm Lenses? Keep Away From DUST!
heliosfan replied to Aswald's topic in Fuji X Lenses
For those who think weatherproof also means dust-proof, they should read the aforelinked story about the fly. It was found inside a WEATHERPROOF Canon L lens...... -
I can't see any other "solution" than contacting Fuji for repairs. It shouldn't behave like that.

Is this also referred to as "shutter mash"? Do you set AF to "release" or "focus" in the menu?

Whoa! My head is ringing....

3rd one really wowed me! Brilliant!

Happy turbo boosting(?), also: M42 on Pentax K on Fuji X
heliosfan replied to Casa's topic in Adapting lenses to Fuji X
Hmm....since flange distance is the same for M42 and Pentax-K (45.46 mm) I don't think you will find an adapter that will work with both (you will at least lose infinity focus). Personally, I would go for the SpeedBooster with the shortest available flange distance (which currently is the Canon EF version - flange distance 44 mm). That way you can adapt all your lenses (and most future ones) by using cheap M42->EF, Pentax-K->EF etc "dumb" adapters (which are basically washers of 1.46 mm thickness). I know, it sounds like a bit of a hack, but it would barely be noticable on the camera. Canon DSLRs are the most "adaptable" of the big brands, and in my Canon days I used this all the time for my Pentax/Takumar lenses. They are so cheap you can just keep them permanently on the lenses. It also has the advantage of being faster to attach than the M42 screwmount. However, I have not tried the SpeedBooster (but want to!). Sharpness is, from what I have heard, equal to the unadapted lenses, with exception of the corners. In fact, the extra stop of light and that full frame depth-of-field is probably too tempting to resist for me in the long run.... You can read about version 1 adapted with a Helios here (MD version of SpeedBooster w/M42->MD adapter): http://jonasraskphotography.com/2014/05/26/helios-turborized-the-helios-44m-4-w-mitakon-lens-turbo-review/ -
It all depends on what you are looking for. 1) The subject separation you only can have with a f1.2 aperture (limits your choice) 2) A good, fast 50 (of which there are plenty) I have quite a collection of vintage 50ish lenses and this is my quick take on (some of) them : Takumars (M42) - I don't really like the bokeh, can be quite nervous, blooming highlights and softness wide open, low contrast. Handling is excellent with both, I thought they were pretty smooth until I tried the Minoltas. Anyway, the 50/1.4 is better than the 55/1.8 IMO, but more expensive of course. Minoltas - I LOVE the 45/2 (cheap, tiny, unique look and smooth focus), the 50/1.7 is even smoother (the smoothest focus ever!) and sharp!, the 55/1.7 unfortunately is in pieces at the moment, but should be similar to the 50/1.7 in sharpness and handling. Same bloom and slight softness when wide open, but different "look" that I like. Canons - nifty fifty 50/1.8 II- wouldn't recommend it, even though I loved it on my Canons, the reason being the electronic aperture, which forces you to either shoot it wide open (or whatever aperture it was last at) or buy an adapter with a built-in aperture ring. The FL 55/1.2 - exquisite! My poor man's 56/1.2 (paid about $100). A lot of glass - a bit heavy. Focus ring is (on my specimen) too stiff for it to be comfortable. Perhaps re-lubing it will help? Doesn't look too big on the camera since the FD adapter is shorter than the Minolta/M42 adapters, which I quite like. Lovely colors and bokeh, but same problem with highlight bloom and slight softness wide open. Razor sharp from f2.8 onwards. Helios 44M - This used to be on my Canon all the time. For some reason, I just don't find it compelling with X-Trans. Don't know why. Also a bit of a long throw and heavy focus ring. Fun bokeh though, sharp, low contrast. Max.aperture of f2 might not be that fast. Pentax-A 50/1.7 - Also sharp etc. Virtually indistinguishable from the Minolta, was my favourite until I got the Minolta (as you might have noticed, I am a Minolta fan). Different colours. I would recommend either the Minolta MC Rokkor PF 50 f1.7 (cheap, razor-sharp and ultra-smooth handling) or a Canon FD/FL 55 1.2. A Minolta 58/1.2 would probably also be great. The MD Minoltas should be similar, but more plasticky than the MC generation.

Great pics! Are they all taken wide open?

The oldest Fujinon lenses are M42 (old Pentax screw-mount) as far as I know. There's plenty of adapters available on ebay. If it is a bayonet-type mount, there is at least one adapter available: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kiwifotos-Lens-mount-adapter-FUJI-X-FUJINON-Lens-Fujifilm-X-Pro-1-/261194903718?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3cd06df0a6 Do you have any details/pictures ?

Acronyms ( use them sparingly!) Glossary needed!?

The topic says it all....has anyone seen any mention of whether the EVF "Auto brightness" feature and the small UI changes in the X30, X100T and the X-T10 will be carried over to the X-T1? The X-T1 4.0 firmware announcements only talk about the AF system, of course this IS the big must-have feature, but Fuji's firmware seems to be in constant development I don't know whether Auto EVF brightness is a feature I would appreciate or not (haven't seen any shops carrying Fujifilm cameras around here, so haven't been able to try it out..). From what I have seen the new parts of the UI obscure less of the EVF when changing film simulation mode etc. which seems handy! Can anyone explain whether this is at all useful and whether the UI from the newer X cameras differs significantly from the look of the X-T1 ver.3.x ? Better/worse? It would seem strange if the flagship model would have an outdated UI, especially when compared to its long lost twin X-T10 (the "lesser" camera).

Lexar Image Rescue 5 licenses free
heliosfan replied to photog's topic in RAW Conversion Fuji X Photos
I would like one Mac license, if you got some left still. -
I'll chime in, since I have the XF18-55 that came with my X-T1 kit and I am pleased with it, although I am more of a prime guy. The OIS is good to have and the f2.8 at the wide end is also decent. Definitely better than my 18-55 II from my Canon days!! But it doesn't excite me that much. It's sharp, got that Fuji look, excellent build quality, but I guess the range just isn't that interesting to me. It now serves as my poor man's wide angle. In a dream world, I would rather go for a 16/1.4, 35/1.4 and a 90/2 and a lot less money in my pocket. Anyway, I found out I needed something a bit closer to a 70-200, so I bought an XC50-230 on a whim, got it for next to nothing and...well...my excuse was that I needed something with autofocus for my son's soccer matches. Trying to capture anything moving with an old 135 mm Takumar was just too much work. I wasn't expecting too much, just happy that I wouldn't have to worry about the constant focus hunting. But honestly it BLEW ME AWAY. Not only does it have (to my eyes) the same IQ as the rather expensive XF equivalent (55-200), but I kind of like the lightness and the plastic doesn't bother me. The compression makes it a very good portrait lens to boot. In good daylight it even manages to catch decent action shots (the new firmware update will probably make it even better). In fact, I have never had any plastic mounts break on me (Canon has a whole range of lenses with plastic mounts), but then again I never dropped my camera onto concrete. Roger Cicala at LensRentals, an authority on the issue says there is no indication that lenses with plastic mounts break more frequently than metal ones, so I think that point is less important. http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2013/12/assumptions-expectations-and-plastic-mounts Turns out, Fuji CAN'T make a bad lens!! From my experience, the XC zooms are seriously underrated and you can pick them up for next to nothing. If you can live without an aperture ring (and rather use the rear dial, which is not so bad if you are used to DSLRs) and the extra stop I say go for the XC16-50, IQ-wise you won't find much of a difference. Not only are you getting those 2 extra mm at the wide end (which actually makes a difference), but you save money that you can put towards other, stellar glass (I know I would). I think it would be a great combo with the X-T10! But don't take my word for it, here are a few comparisons of the XC and the XF zooms: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHoI2U4v2mc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAvIaiIbv2Q

Yeah, tell us more flysurfer

Weather sealing, unified design and updated focus motors in the entire current lineup !! For instance, why doesn't the 56 1.2 have a clutch and WR ? Just weird (unless it is an actual engineering issue that prevents it). Some consistency Fuji, please!

Sorry, I don't know what happened to my reply. I will try to recap what I wrote. Short version: No, I am not accusing anyone of condoning piracy, that is trolling. I am just blaming Fujifilm for their POOR POOR communication around this Lightroom/other tethering software issue. Yes, the tethering plugin is in theory FREE, but it is only distributed with the Windows software, which costs money. So copying it is not right, but who would know ??? Fujifilm sure won't tell us!!! So for us poor Mac users, we are therefore kept in limbo until it shows up in Adobe Exchange "soon". BY THE WAY, does anyone know whether this only works with the CC version or can you buy plugins for the standalone version of LR as well?

+1 for this! Fuji, are you listening ?
