Had exactly the same problem after I decided to get smart and installed first the thin Hoya UV filter straight on the lens, and then - the adapter ring and the lens hood. The reason was very simple - I wanted a bit more protection against the flare off the large filter. This was the first answer that I found and, indeed, after inspecting the contraption on the lens, it was obvious that the filter restricts the focusing movement of the lens barrel. To much of my chagrin, had to change the order, and the problem disappeared immediately.

Thank you very much, SpaghettiPaparazzi
