Fuji XT-2 not working with EF-X8 flash

Hi,

 

I have a very new XT-2 that appears to have a flash issue. It seems as though the camera does not "see" or recognise either the Fuji supplied EF-X8 flash nor my Nissin i40. I understand that there are potential issues with the i40 and have sent it in for a firmware upgrade but the EF-X8 behaves the same way. 

 

Difficult explanation - when I attach the flash to the camera, the camera's exposure status remains exactly the same as without the flash. Assume that in a darkened environment an exposure of 1/8 sec at say f5.6 were required to produce a decent exposure and a visible image on the LCD screen. Anything "faster" than that would result in an underexposed image and a dark LCD screen. So, typically this is potentially when one wants to throw a flash on at say 1/60 sec at f5.6. When I do this and at these settings, the image on my LCD will darken completely even though the flash does fire and does produce a decent result.

 

If the camera is unable to detect a flash unit and in so doing compensate what is visible on the LCD screen, then how is one supposed to see what one is doing? I've tried every conceivable setting that I can imagine and still no joy. Am I doing something wrong or are there other such complaints - otherwise, whats the point of a flash??

You need to have the Mechanical shutter on!

There's nothing wrong with the flash, it's a settings issue. You need to have the "Preview Exposure in Manual" menu option set to OFF. At the moment it's previewing the manual exposure which, as you say, is black. Turn the preview setting OFF and the image will gain up so you can at least see what you are taking.

 

Also shutter has to be manual or manual + electronic, not just electronic.

 

But the Preview setting is what is making the image black. It's in the manual (page 211) where the setting is, or a good look through each setting, probably a screen setting (setup menu screen settings), will find it.

If I understand you correctly, you are getting the flash to fire, and are getting a decently exposed image. But the issue is that you have a dark viewfinder prior to exposure, which keeps you from composing the image, correct? If so, you need to go in to the menu, and turn off the exposure preview for the EVF. When exposure preview is on, you see what you would get without flash. But if you turn that off, the EVF increases the gain of the EVF independent of the pending exposure.

Are you in single shot mode, rather than a burst mode? Are you in mechanical shutter mode rather than electronic shutter? Do you have the "preview exposure in manual" mode turned to off?

 

I wish Fuji would tell you WHY things aren't working on your camera rather than just making you feel like it's broken.

Hey there!

I'm having inconsistent flash issues. Sometimes when I attach the EF-X8, everything works fine and TTL mode turns on. Other times, the camera (X-T2) doesn't recognize the flash at all, and the flash button in the quick menu and in settings is just deactivated. But, the camera still recognizes when the flash is up and when it's down (when up, the button is deactivated; when down, the button allows you to switch between M and Off). So I don't really think it's a problem with the sensor... but I don't know. Any ideas on why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't?

Also, my preview exposure manual mode is off; my shutter is always either mechanical or mechanical + electronic; and I'm in single shot mode.

have same issues with my Xpro1 + EF X8 flash and other flashes. its in off all the time. how to turn and sync with all flashes. how to configure MS and ES shutter and change it.

I am 4 years late to the party, but it is most likely that you are on continuous shooting modes, i.e. CH and CL. You need to be on single shot mode for it to pick it up usually.
