Even in macro mode, the X30 is not achieving AF in fairly close distances.  I was trying to focus on a flower, but got the red AF warning, and this occurred no matter what the zoom setting.

Any suggestions?

you should have two settings, one macro and one super macro. if none works as explained here below, there is a problem and you camera needs servicing.

The following restrictions apply in super macro mode: the lens must be zoomed out until the zoom bar turns white and the flash can not be used.

Use of a tripod is recommended to prevent blur caused by camera shake.

The shadow cast by the lens may appear in photos taken with the flash at very short ranges. Zoom out slightly or increase the distance to the subject.
