Those who have been so patient and have indulged me in reading my thoughts about te pointlessness of discussing things before they do actually exist, know that I am not really and generally very charmed by this modern trend.

However I couldn’t help notice that the rumors section of this very site has published what it obviously believes to be the new and yet again reformed road map for the Fuji lenses to come and it has included an XF 8mm lens ( the picture is so tiny that it actually might not be the one of this particular lens but just a black undefined lens shape).

It is set to be introduced in December 2017 ( whatever these things are worth because I’ve grown to think that indications on things like this are generally very imprecise especially when things are yet to materialize)

This got me curious more than anything else on the road map because this was a sudden and unexpected addition since all the rest was talked about before but I don’t seem to recall ever any reference to this particular focal length.

Would this be a fish-eye or an incredibly wide, angle lens?

Probably, at this stage there is nothing else than this, otherwise PatrickFR would have been all too eager to tell us some more, but I thought of asking anyway.

If this is a fisheye I don’t think I would be tempted to part with my Samyang which gets already very little use as it is but I am very happy with.

I bought that one second hand (first series of the 2.8 type) and I am very happy with it, nevertheless I’d like to see it head to head with the Fuji.

Well, they will have to do exceptionally well if the want to compete with the Samyang.

Seen that the autofocus here is completely useless the only added bonus would be a serious correction of the natural fall-off and a better anti-reflections treatment, but I seriously doubt that image quality could be improved in terms of resolution spectacular (for this kind of lens) at f8

I would welcome a fast rectilinear ultra wide angle prime from Fuji. I hope it is a 8mm f/2.0-2.8. I do also shoot with full frame systems, but I would prefer to have an APS-C wide angle for a number of reasons. The first of these is that when you go landscaping you need to carry equipment in a backpack. APS-C systems have an automatic weight advantage. Secondly, Fuji APS-C wide angles lenses seem to enjoy a one stop reduction in vignetting at the corners compared to their full frame rivals. This is even true when you compare the Fuji XF 16mm F/1.4 with the Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 when shooting at maximum aperture (judging by the published performances).

I had been thinking that I wish Fuji (or Zeiss) would release a fast high-end rectilinear ultra wide angle prime lens that would give the full frame Zeiss options a run for their money. Then presto this rumour comes along.

I think it is a good move, one that might attract more landscape photographers tired of lugging heavy full frame equipment up the mountains to the Fuji X system.

The problems to make such a rectilinear lens ( and still be affordable ) are very serious and the question is always whether the investment wouldn’t come to such a cost in terms of quality and money that the results of de-fishing the image made with a fish eye with a program which would use all of the frame wouldn’t make it cheaper and not worse.
