Erikk, the GW690 would be fantastic. At an even better price you could get an Olympus 35RC or the Canon, Nikon or Ricoh equivalent. They were all great cameras, and you'd be looking at under €150 in mint condition. You could then spend the rest of your budget on a dark bag, developing tank and a few chemicals to develop the film yourself, and a decent film scanner. The GW690 is a beauty, but it's heavy and bulky, and you may end up choosing not to take it out with you for that reason. One of the smaller, lighter ones, such as the 35RC would be much more tempting to carry around.

Have you looked at the Epson R-D1s ? It's digital, but it's like using a film camera. There are only 4 ISO settings: 200 400 800 and 1600 and with its CCD sensor it produces images that exactly match those ISO settings on film. The R-D1 has a cult following, and even though it is now 10 years old, pre-dating even the Leica M8 by 2 years, its 6.1MP still produces wonderful images that can be printed up to A2 without loss of definition. I still take mine out and use it from time to time, and it is one of the most enjoyable cameras I've ever used.

The 27mm lens is certainly Fuji's smallest offering. It focusses quickly and accurately and produces sharp and nicely contrasty images. For me it's a valid, compact alternative for the 35mm, and can be found on eBay at very interesting prices. The 27mm has no lens hood, and fitting one would only make it into a non-pancake, but without a hood, just occasionally, you may see a bit of flare. If you fit a protective filter, you will see flare more often. Great lens for street and travel photography, and worth buying.

15 JULY, FORTY YEARS AGO On 15 July 1975, aged just 16, I became a photographer with my photographic coverage of the "Point Law", a Shell-Mex & B.P. coastal tanker that ran aground at full speed on the southwest of the island of Alderney. I was there when it happened, with my Halina Paulette Electric camera, and I scaled 60m cliffs in very windy conditions to capture close-up shots of the helicopter and lifeboat rescuing the crew of 12, who had been drinking heavily. I was able to sell the photographs to many British newspapers, which were then further syndicated worldwide. I was in the right place at the right time with a very basic camera, but no matter how basic, it was the best camera in the world because it was there when I needed it. Two weeks later the story broke again with the news that the captain had taken his own life. If I had not been there when it happened I would certainly not have become a photographer. Not taken with a Fuji camera, but despite the Ilford film used for the photo montage, I used Fuji film.© © Paul Crespel 1975 - All Rights Reserved
