Soviet Jupiter Lens on XT-2

I'm looking to get into some manual focus lens and have always been interested in the Jupiter's. I'd like to buy a Jupiter 11 135mm f/4 lens but was hoping to get some insight on how to mount it and still be able to focus correctly? The lens is listed as having an M39 mount. What adapters/modifications would need to be made to allow this to work correctly?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have that lens.  Bought it when I was playing around with film.  I have mounted it to my XT-2 with an adaptor I bought on ebay.  Have no idea who I bought it from it was several years ago but the adaptors are very simple devices - no magic to them. The only marking on mine says L39-FX.  It works fine on the XT-2; if you set manual mode, you have the focus assist features available.  Compared to the 55-200 at 135, the Jupiter lens is pretty soft.  It is pretty small and light-weight, so it does have that going for it.

I agree with Arthur. The Russian lenses are soft and lens copies have wide variance in quality, chromatic aberration, ghosting, distortion and sharpness. Most of these lenses are sold from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Two popular Russian lenses are the Helios 44M 58mm f2 (swirly bokeh), and the MIR-1B 35mm. The Jupiter 9 is 85mm and has 15 aperture blades but lens copies have a lot of variance.

If you want to experiment with some vintage lenses you could probably get some sweet deals on Takumar M42.

The Auto Chinon 55mm f2, Rikenon 58 f2 and Nikkor non-AI 58mm 1.2   produce nice soap bubble bokeh.

As for mounting, you could always get and M39-FX adapter from Rainbow Imaging for less than $15.00

If you want to see the characteristics of different lens, just go on Flickr, search the lens you are interested in and view some of the pictures.

Hope this helped.

    • Hi Guy, I need a secondary Fuji X to back-up my X-H2 cheeply.   I sold my X-T2 to get the X-H2 beause I wanted to increase my AF hit rate. That being said, can you comment on the hit rates between X-H1, X-T3, and X-T4 in 2024? With all having the latest firmware, is there a big jump in AF performace between the three? Thanks, Tomek
    • oh wow, that is very odd.  Can you not simply put any version you want onto a formated SD card, and install it like every other priece of hardware on the planet?   @botty have you tried a different lens, or updating the firmware on your lens (if thats the only one you have one)?
    • A while back Apple put a security update in its operating system that requires users to give permission for USB C or Thunderbolt connected devices to transfer data back and forth between the device and the computer. If the user did not give permission, the  device could only use the USB or Thunderbolt port for battery charging. Initially, this update was only for laptops, they may have brought it over to desktop computers later. As far as I know, if the user accidentally does not give access permission, there is no easy way to reset this for a single device, but there is sort of a work-around described in the release notes: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/macos-release-notes/macos-13-release-notes Does this help?
    • Unless this has changed - its never been possible to revert back to a prior firmware version on Fujifilm cameras
    • Has anyone else noticed that since one of the recent firmware updates: the GFX 100s will not connect to a Mac of any age via USB cable. I am currently on FW 2.11 on my GFX 100s. Using USB-C the camera will connect to both iOS and Windows and we can see and download image files. But now when connecting it via cable to a Mac - the camera will not show up at all.   I have been reporting this to Fuji support but it has not gone anywhere for months. TIA. John
