With a budget of $2k, would you buy the xt2 with the kit 18-55 @$1900 or an xt1 @$800with 16-55 2.8 for $1200?

Get the Xt2 and 18-55.

 

The body is a significant upgrade on the xt1, especially focus ability.

 

You will add extra lenses later when you decide what you need, and the body will keep you happy for several years.

 

Also, the 18-55 is an excellent lens that will cover all needs except long telephoto. I also think extra lens are a distraction and an unnecessary additional variable when getting to know a new body. Take the 18-55 to its limits before you decide on your next lens (which will be prime by the way!).

 

And final thought.... the 16-55 is just too big!

Agreed. The X-T2 is superior in performance to the X-T1 (I own both).  The 16-55 is huge compared to the 18-55 and in all honesty the sharpness is inconsequential - at least for me.    My 18-55 is my "don't leave home without it lens"  Period.
