Good evening,

 

What is the forum view   or experience on :

 

The introduced regs, that cameras should be in the hold from a limited number of countries & cannot be carried in the cabin

This will expand to all voyages ( prediction )

 

  • Is the Camera stout enough
  • What is the insurance position
  • what special packing is required   # remember the box it came in
  • if we use original packaging as guideline you will have little room for anything else
  • who kept all them boxes

 

I have seen how suitcases are treated!

 

I have never seen security regulations relaxed even if they make no further sense

 

You can see through a lens

What travel regulations are you referring to that specifically affect travellers between UK and US and vice versa?

I refer to regulations that limit the size of any electronic gear to the size of a smart phone from certain countries ( 6 ) so far

 

These restrictions affect inbound flights to the UK from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

  • Cairo International Airport (CAI) in Egypt
  • Ataturk International Airport (IST) in Turkey
  • King Abdul-Aziz International Airport (JED) in Saudi Arabia

  • Dubai International Airport (DXB) in United Arab Emirates
  • Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) in United Arab Emirates

 

What is included in the ban?

Any electronic device larger than 16cm by 9.3cm by 1.5cm.

 

  • Laptops
  • Tablets
  • E-readers
  • Cameras
  • Portable DVD players
  • Electronic game units larger than a smartphone
  • Travel printers/scanners

I'm not sure what I'll do if this restriction spreads. I just returned from Bali and I would hate to have to leave my Xpro2 home or risk losing it to theft. Taking photos is part of the reason i travel. I hope Canada doesn't follow along.

It is not clear whether you can bring any electrical device without batteries because the article makes special mention of items containing batteries.

 

Also it is absolutely pointless because all and any only applies to direct flights , if you have a stop over or simply change plane somewhere you may never be affected.

And here's the real reason for the ban as mentioned in tbe CNN link:

 

"Global hubs affected

The new ban affects some of the largest airlines at the busiest hubs in the world"

 

US airlines have been losing business to Emirates, Qatar and Turkish Airlines for years, now they've managed to inconvenience their passengers with a pointless 'security' measured based on 'trumped up' fears about terrorists who are apparently unable to figure that taking a connecting flight through Europe will get them around the ban.

Good evening,

 

Well I fly to Uganda via Dubai and would not be happy putting an XPRO2 & 100 - 400 lens in hold luggage

 

If the camera flashes up and works it has no space to put the ingredients required for an explosive device in,  

noting you cannot take a device on board without batteries as it must flash up on test

 

and having worked with security before I know these measures propagate, the simple philosopher rightly

figures out that if his security is not at the top end of industry practice he is screwed if it goes wrong

 

It will propagate to other flights on the just in case principle until internal flights are affected

 

We have trains that carry +500 PAX without the fuss and I an sure other nations multiply that number

 

An example is security took of me a jar of crystallized solid honey claiming it was a threat whilst clearly not a liquid

and you cannot question them or you will be "offloaded" &they just give a knowing look when they know it is bs

 

Watch the space,  airlines will require the equipment to be specially packed in flight cases, and an additional charge - noses will be in the trough

      I use a TECHART ring to mount Canon EF lenses on the GFX 50S-II and 100S-II, maintaining image stabilization and autofocus. The only limitation are lenses with a small rear element diameter that make it impossible to cover medium format. Fast lenses like the EF 85/1.2L or the 100-400L, however, work great.

      I also use a Nikon to GFX Fringer and it works very well.  24mm f/1.8 vignettes so best used on 35mm mode.  50mm f/1.8 covers the entire frame very well with no issues and is a superb little lens. 105mm Sigma vignettes slightly but is perfectly usable. 300 f/4 likewise the 105.  I have a 70-200 f/20+.8 incoming to test so will report back but I'm expecting a little vignetting.  Even in 35mm mode the image is still 60MP and if you're prepared to manually crop and correct you can get 80-90 MP images.  I also have a C/Y to GFX adapter.  The 24mm Sigma Superwide vignettes strongly. Ditto 28-80 Zeiss Sonnar. 80-200 f/4 Sonnar is perfectly usable. All work fine as 35mm mode lenses.  I also have an M42 adapter which I tried with the Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm f/3.5 with good results.

      Ahh, the infamous brick wall photos… 😀 According to internet lore, if the dng converter does not properly apply the corrections, you can have it apply custom profiles that should work for you. How to do that is waaaaaay outside of this comment’s scope, but there are plenty of sites listed in the search engines that step you through the processes. Best wishes.

      Jerry Thank you very much. That is extremely helpful. It seems that the camera and the lens have the latest firmware update, so it appears that the corrections should be applied automatically. The lens arrived this afternoon and I took some quick test shots, in which the correct lens information appeared in the EXIF files, so that sounds good. I used Adobe DNG converter to convert the Raw (RAF) files, and then opened the DNG files and saved them in PSD format. However, with a beautiful, clear, cloudless blue sky, there were no lines near the edges to check if distortion had been corrected. Another day I plan to photograph a brick wall. Thank you for your help.
