So, I got myself a barely used XF90 a few weeks ago. I really love this thing. The sharpness at f2 is just mad!

I noticed one problem however, and I'm not sure if it's the lens or a body firmware thing: If I have focus close to infinity, and want to focus on something close (using zone focus), the camera appears to grab focus on the close subject, but the subject remains out of focus. A repeat focusing does not fix this. Change focus mode to single however seems to fix the problem.

Did anybody else notice this?

How wide is the zone ? 3*3 ? 3*5 ?

There is a slight out of focus issues with zone focusing on Fuji bodies, sometimes, it will rather grab the focus on a point that you really don't want to use.

I have seen that happening with pretty much all lenses, it's not a common thing tho, it just happens every now and then.

My workaround for it, is to change to MF which is set to a single point focus, and use the AF-Lock button at the back to nail down the focus to at the spot I need and recompose the framing.

No, it's not an issue with the zone itself. The camera thinks it has focus lock, actually shows the focus point green on screen, at the spot I want focus, but focus is still way off. The times en encountered this, I had it on 3x5 mode.

Just for my understanding, the focus is off on the ViewFinder only ? Or is it off, on both the LCD and output file ?

If the later, then yeah, could be something wrong with the lens.

Could you be focusing closer than the minimum focus distance? That catches me off-guard sometimes - I'll be just a bit too close and it'll incorrectly confirm focus.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case, but no, the subject was several meters away.

Just went out again yesterday, Didn't have any trouble so far, but didn't used zone focus very much this time.

I don't know.. I don't make a photo of something if it's not in focus ;)

So, I went out yesterday to get some shots of the 3rd Giro stage and found some things out. So it looks like, the AF problem only occurs in AFC mode. If you focus close-up, and then focus far away, it is quite slow compared to AFS, and its also very unreliable. And that is even when using the middle points. After reading some more, I guess that MS+ES mode also has some influence on this. I'll try again in MS only mode next time.

Double check the auto focus setting for the AFC mode, if it is set to release or if it is on focus ?

The AFC mode is known to be quite a bit slower than AFS but it can follow a moving subject, the AFC is also expecting a moving subject too, so if you are static or if the subject is not moving enough, you will get out of focus picture on very regular basis.

The AFC behavior is VERY different than on DSLR and can be counter intuitive if you aren't used to it or know how it works/behave.

Yep. If I set my Camera to AF-C and Zone-AF 3x5 (although different lens, 100-400) and try to shoot a sitting water frog, when half-pressing the shutter, the image shown in the EVF is out of focus constantly. But all the images taken, either in CL or CH, have something sharp in them where the focus zone was. And usually, it's the frogs face.

Hmm, I'm still not sure. Last week tried to make some close focus images indoors with quite a lot of light (5000 lumens of LED and some daylight), but focus was still slow and tricky, even with AFC. In comparison the 16-55 is a speed daemon :) . The XF90 feels more like the XF35f1.4. Judging by reviews, I think it should be way faster than that. But since I can't compare with another one, who knows..

Images are very sharp though :)

I just received my 90mm today and appear to be having a similar issue. Getting AF confirmation when it is clearly not even close, it gets it on the third attempt and the image is great. The lens hunts a lot and then snaps into 'focus'. Going to give it more testing tomorrow. I was expecting this lens to be not sluggish judging by the reviews.

A buddy of mine rented the 90mm f/2 and I was using it on my X-E2 and kind of what Kim was saying that it would hunt and then snap into focus. But I've also had plenty of moments where I would miss focus like 3 times in a row and I was in great available light trying to focus on a contrasty edge and using center point focus. I'm looking to rent the lens out myself and test it on the X-Pro2 to see if that makes a difference.

Used it to shoot today in daylight and all good. That thing is sharp!

Will test again tonight once the light drops a little bit.

Any more low light tests? I've been to a zoo and it worked fine basically, but light was good.

Not had it out in the dark since but planning on a gig shoot shortly so will report back once that night goes by. That lens is replacing my Canon EF 135L f/2 on a 5D3 and that is my all time favourite lens, but now I think it might be the 1.2/56. So perhaps I was just caught up in the likeness. X-PRO2 arriving on Monday so be interesting to try it on all three cameras.

    • I use a TECHART ring to mount Canon EF lenses on the GFX 50S-II and 100S-II, maintaining image stabilization and autofocus. The only limitation are lenses with a small rear element diameter that make it impossible to cover medium format. Fast lenses like the EF 85/1.2L or the 100-400L, however, work great.
    • I also use a Nikon to GFX Fringer and it works very well.  24mm f/1.8 vignettes so best used on 35mm mode.  50mm f/1.8 covers the entire frame very well with no issues and is a superb little lens. 105mm Sigma vignettes slightly but is perfectly usable. 300 f/4 likewise the 105.  I have a 70-200 f/20+.8 incoming to test so will report back but I'm expecting a little vignetting.  Even in 35mm mode the image is still 60MP and if you're prepared to manually crop and correct you can get 80-90 MP images.  I also have a C/Y to GFX adapter.  The 24mm Sigma Superwide vignettes strongly. Ditto 28-80 Zeiss Sonnar. 80-200 f/4 Sonnar is perfectly usable. All work fine as 35mm mode lenses.  I also have an M42 adapter which I tried with the Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm f/3.5 with good results.
    • Ahh, the infamous brick wall photos… 😀 According to internet lore, if the dng converter does not properly apply the corrections, you can have it apply custom profiles that should work for you. How to do that is waaaaaay outside of this comment’s scope, but there are plenty of sites listed in the search engines that step you through the processes. Best wishes.
    • Jerry Thank you very much. That is extremely helpful. It seems that the camera and the lens have the latest firmware update, so it appears that the corrections should be applied automatically. The lens arrived this afternoon and I took some quick test shots, in which the correct lens information appeared in the EXIF files, so that sounds good. I used Adobe DNG converter to convert the Raw (RAF) files, and then opened the DNG files and saved them in PSD format. However, with a beautiful, clear, cloudless blue sky, there were no lines near the edges to check if distortion had been corrected. Another day I plan to photograph a brick wall. Thank you for your help.
