The 16mm VS 23mm for streets

How could we know your focal length preferences?

Personally i won't give away the XF23 ... it is such a good lens!

I wondered whether i should sell XF18 and FX14 to get the resources for the XF16 ... but i won't ... i like them both for several reasons.

For sure the XF16 is very tempting, optically very good and weather sealed ... but for street i prefer XF35, XF23 or sometimes XF18 (and for sure the X100) :-)

hello,
I love my 23mm but the new 16mm look good , shortest focus distance , WR ,same aperture.

Do you think i can leave my 23mm

and you what do you do ?

I would keep the 23 and try to acquire the 16 too. They are both great lenses for street as they present different perspective.

Changing the focal length changes the kind of photographs you take. Even the difference between 16 and 23 (or 23 and 35) changes the way you see street scenes. If you're willing to adjust the way you shoot to accommodate, or exploit, a different focal length then the 16 might well work for you. If you do want to start shooting a little wider why not get the 18 for now and see how it goes.

For me, 16 is just a bit too wide for the way I like to shoot on the streets. Right now the 23 is the one I use most.

I would (and actually did) sell the XF23. (Great lens!!!! but...) For me it was too big for an all time carry around lens (on X-E2).

My plans now are grabbing the XF16 for kinda "special" needs and also purchase the X100T (for all time carrying around). I think, that's a good compromise.

If you just want to carry around one camera then think of combining the X100T (or S) with the WLC-X100 so you're coming close to 16mm.

But in the end it's all according to your personal needs as Don said before.

It's all up to your own... eye. It's like cooking: some prefer more salty.

Personally, I started to shoot street photography with the 18mm. A bit too wide for me... Then I bought the 35mm: too narrow. Then Fuji released the 23mm, it's now always mounted on my X-Pro: street, portrait, it is to me the most versatile Fuji lense (and really good quality too).

I own the new 16 1.4 and the X100T. For street, 16mm is too wide for my taste. It tends to capture everything, makes it more difficult to draw focus into a certain area. I think the 18mm would be the widest I'd go personally. I tend to keep the 16mm for environmental portraits, but that's more my thing anyway...
