http://www.fujirumors.com/new-source-unveils-why-sigma-will-not-make-x-mount-lenses-and-what-fuji-did-wrong-according-to-sigma/

It got me thinking, as someone who is relatively new to X mount (coming from Sony E mount)

One thing Sony's line up has that Fuji's doesn't is different tiers to the prime lenses, to match somewhat with the different bodies

for example Sony offer, Sony branded lenses, Sony G, and Sony Zeiss, which are all priced accordingly

If you spend £200-£400 on a Sony body, they have 2 cheap Zoom (Kit) lenses, and 5 cheap Primes, all under £360.00 (3 under £200.00) each, zooms cover 16-50 OIS, and 55-210 OIS, the primes are 16mm F/2.8, 20mm F/2.8, 30mm F/3.5 (Macro), 35mm F/1.8 OIS, and 50mm F/1.8 OIS.

I'm not claiming these lenses are world betters (although the 50mm F/1.8 is a fantastic lens for £199.00), however they have a place especially with the entry to mid level bodies. On top of this you have the 3 Sigma art lenses at 19mm F/2.8, 30mm F/2.8, and 60mm F/2.8.

The Sigma lenses make less sense on the Sony E mount than they would on the X mount, as the 20mm, 35mm and 50mm Sony lenses are optically better for not a lot more money.

The only sub £400.00 Fujinon lenses (on Amazon) are the 27mm F/2.8, 18mm F/2.0, and the 60mm F/2.4 Macro primes, and the 2 XC zooms.

If you pick up a Fuji A1/A2 or other body up to and including the £499.00 X-T10, there is not a great deal of choice in the Fuji line up or any other brands with auto focus at entry level prices.

I believe there is a market for Prime lenses that are better than the XC zooms (not that they are bad) which has a lower entry level cost.

I know personally as I do not shoot a lot wide (less than 35mm) when I changed to Fuji (X-T10), I did not get the XC kit lens or the XF Kit Lens, and I would not spend several hundred pounds on a wide lens, but prefer shooting with primes (at sub 100mm focal lengths) therefore I may consider buying a cheap carry around wide angel lens if it was available.

It's a condivisible analisys, but I think at Fuji's headquarter they decided to bet on providing the best lenses possible, in order to differentiate themselfs from other manufacturer. I remember

reading an interview some time ago, in which they responded in merit of the characteristic of the XF 16-55 f2.8, and why it was so big and without OIS. They stated that they are seeking for the

best optical performances, sacrifying other aspects, like portability.

Probably the have see that the xc zooms don't sell very well and don't want to invest money in a risky field... maybe in if the new 35mm f2 will sell well they may try to taste the situaton with other cheaper,

smaller version of some of the existing lenses.

Unlike what Sony has done, Fuji has a plan to populate their lens line up before anything else.  They are still working on this goal, however once this goal is accomplished, I feel you will see them doing something very similar here.

I find it odd that Sigma chooses to make lenses for Sony E Mount, given their reasons for not making them for Fuji X Mount.  I looked at Sony, and the lack of lens choices and the choices that are available made my decision to go for Fuji very easy.

There are enough people on the Adapted Lens Forum using old 50mm F1.8 lenses to suggest that there would be a demand for something similar in the X Mount, provided it was priced at around £200. Maybe even without an Aperture ring, made of plastic and labelled as an XC lens if it would keep the price down!

Until then my default lenses will be an old Olympus 50MM F1.8. and the XC 16-50. The Fuji XF 56MM F1.2 is waytoo expensive for my budget.

edit.

I confused the converted mm lenght with the actual lenght read more carefully, my fault

In the range fo 50 mm range there is also the xf 18-55, and it is one of the cheapest lens in the line-up (now is around 350 €). Not so fast as the Olympus,

but faster than the 16-50. I have it and it does an increadible work for a kit zoom.

    • Autumn is hanging around ready to take over summer's job. Locally, it will be  at least a month or longer before widespread fall colors are ready. But it is officially Autumn. And some flora are not waiting to show off their pretty colors ...

    • pw pix, thanks for your sharing your experience, and I am happy to know I am not the only person whom this has happened to. I held the X-H2S and really liked it, so I wonder if that may be a better camera to switch to ...
    • Thank you Abmet. 1/480 of a second at f 5.6, ISO 80. Focus point is dead center.
    • It's a problem with the camera and phone not agreeing on how to manage the pairing. It appears to only affect phones from Oppo, OnePlus, and any other brand that uses the same oppo/OnePlus version of Android. My xt-5 was broken by a recent firmware update in exactly the same way. As far as I'm aware it's a problem with the camera firmware NOT the X-App. It's disappointing (to say the least) that this isn't going to be fixed. Also the remark that it only works with stock android is nonsense, since there are plenty of people out there with Samsung phones. What they meant was, we can't be bothered to test it on ColourOs. It would appear that Fuji are, gradually ensuring that ALL their cameras don't work with ColourOs which doesn't seem like the smartest move...
    • That is typical for the X-T5, I was having a significantly worse hit rate before the last two firmware updates. A non-moving scene with a clear, central subject, plenty of light and contrast, single point AF in S mode, completely out of focus (even though it gave focus confirmation in the viewfinder) . That was with modern lenses like the XF 18/1.4 and Viltrox AF 13/1.4. It was occurring more like one in 20 photos. I still have wildly varaiable results with the XF 150-600 and C mode AF when shooting birds, sometimes it's better to have subject detection (bird) off, sometimes on. It's very frustrating out in the field and has lost me several lifetime opportunities. I like the 40MP sensor and the results when it works well, but I contemplate selling the X-T5 and purchasing an X-H2S in it's place. That seems more economically sensible than a wholesale switch to another brand for bird photography. Additionally, the recently publicised tech documents from Fuji about the AF and settings for various subjects and lens types seems to have made my X-T5 and XF 150-600mm slightly to moderately worse for bird photography.
