I’ve only had my XT30 for a week so forgive me if I’m missing something. The Q menu seemed like a great idea. I’ve set it up with the settings I want quick access to, but the camera only stores a few of these. Ie if I set the focus mode to spot on C1 then wide on C2, when I go back to C1 the focus mode will have changed to wide. It makes the Q menu seem almost useless.

I assume you mean AF Mode not Focus Mode?

There is a difference between the Quick Menu and Custom Settings.

The Custom Settings (C1 etc) are a set of Image Quality settings that you can change as a set.

These settings include ISO and Film Simulation but not AF Mode.

The Quick Menu is an easy way of accessing a whole bunch of settings (that may include Custom Settings but others as well - such as AF Mode). The AF Mode is changed independently of Custom Settings.

That is why you can change the AF Mode in the Quick Menu but changing the Custom Setting has no affect on AF Mode.

It took me awhile to figure this out on my XT3 (currently on my 3rd week of ownership) as well. Drove me nuts that the setting would reset each time switching to another custom setting. To setup custom settings you have to go into the I.Q. menu. The very last item is edit/save custom settings. This is where the Q menus custom settings are setup, not by pressing Q and making changes.
