Why JPEG files are suddenly good enough for me.
flysurfer replied to abjurina's topic in General Discussion
You can simply meter the DR expansion that's required if you want to know "exactly" which DR mode to set (200 or 400). There are more detailed instructions in my book. Basically, you meter the scene for the highlights and the shadows/midtones, and the difference tells you which DR setting to use. As for the fringing: It's really pretty obvious. For example: -

The shots in scenario 2 look nice to me, but I'd still enhance some of them with the built-in RAW converters to create better SOOC JPEGs. Scenario 1 includes several shots with heavy highlight clipping and severe CAs (or green fringing). Different DR settings would have mitigated the issue, and external RAW processing would have helped even more. -
X-T1 FW 4.0 BETA: I have it and share my findings soon ;)

Not a problem with my pre-release version of firmware 4. It works like it should. I can move and resize points and zones as I please with FD on. Maybe you are using an older beta? -

F4 had to be announced before the X-T10 to avoid a shitstorm of epic proportions. Fuji knows very well that many of their customers are quite unreasonable and complain about everything, not only the what, but also the when. Whatever they do or don't do, it's always wrong. Just think about the endless complaints about the "missing" X-E2 update, or the X100S firmware update whining. -

And for testing them before release. How dare they...?! -

Sadly, I have lost plenty of time wiping cameras totally clean to make them accept production firmware. Hopefully, I won't have to do it next week when I want to install the release version of F4 over my pre-release. As of now, there are mixed messages from Tokyo, maybe it depends on which version was leaked. They certainly didn't expect this to happen, so who knows what happens now? Hopefully nothing. Of course Fuji could in theory release a F4 that installs over everything, but they wouldn't do that, because that very F4 release would then also install over F4.1, F5 etc. That's not helpful, because there are plenty of folks out there who need all the help they can get to update their cameras. Safety features are part of the release firmware process. Such a "special" firmware would also have to erase all settings, so you have to start from scratch, selecting the language and setting the system time. After all, there's a reason why rollbacks aren't allowed (at least not w/o blanking the entire camera memory): They could interfere with feature settings from a newer firmware that was on the camera earlier. It could basically fry the camera or introduce weird behavior, as camera registers are used in different ways. -

After user complaints about bugs in new firmware releases, this was the first time Fuji decided to hand-out a pre-release version of a firmware update to selected photographers in order to collect feedback (in a 2 week long period), then take another week to apply any fixes based on this feedback. Before this, Fuji simply released software that was only tested within Fuji (and maybe a few trusted "buddies" like Zack Arias). I recommended a change of this restrictive policy, because it sounded reasonable to beta-test pre-release firmware in the field for a few weeks. Fuji listened, but I'm not sure if they will ever repeat this "experiment" after what has happened here. -

Honestly, why would they even care? They stated that installing the pre-release version is not recommended and at your own risk. Now, I am personally taking this risk every day, as I am taking more pictures with pre-release hardware and software than with production samples. I don't have sleepless nights about it, because I know that in case a camera or lens is fried, Fuji will replace the hardware and send the broken products to Tokyo for analysis. This happens, I still remember my first case before the X-Pro1 was announced at CES, when a new lens firmware for pre-production 18/35/60mm lenses fried many of them beyond repair. In the internal document for the firmware, Fuji forgot to mention which PP serial numbers the firmware was suitable for (and which not). So yes, even the serial number and production date of your camera and lens can make a difference, that's why pre-release testing is not public. -

That's rarely the case, only in very early betas. I remember using 3 different T10 firmware versions with internal version numbers showing on the outside and at least 2 later ones with 1.00 showing up. I reckon that the internal 1.36 version eventually became the 1.00 version in the first batch of production models. Of course, I usually know the internal number and usually have read a document stating bugs and omissions (and improvements over the last version). I also have methods/software to wipe cameras clean so that I can reinstall ANY firmware version when the camera wouldn't let me install the final firmware (it sometimes happens). For the evaluation version of F4 that I have been using since early June, the document clearly stated that it would display 4.00 even though it isn't the final version. Then again, what do I know, you made it clear in your posts that you know more about Fuji's firmware than I or Fujifilm. So I'm sure that you are right, I have no clue and Fuji is lying (as usual). -
Wireless TTL flash with Fuji X-T1
flysurfer replied to rjmvandermeulen's topic in Fuji X-T1 / Fuji X-T10
John Poremba (Roboshoot) is a delegate at my workshop in Santa Barbara. So those who take part at this event will have the opportunity to personally ask him about his Fuji-compatible wireless TTL products. I assume he'll also bring a demo unit. -
I have installed Fuji's new grips on the black production X-T10 (black) for my dad and my silver PP X-T10, and it's the "game changer" I was hoping for. Highly recommended. Btw, the Arca Swiss grip is bow attached with a coin screw, so no more Allen screws.

Amazing how the experts here know more about Fujifilm's products than Fuji themselves. Of course it's an evaluation version. And the feedback deadline was today, so my job is done. As for any changes and bug fixes in next week's final version: Fuji will of course never publicly disclose this information. -
Question regarding flash sync speed on X-T1

Wow, quite a long explanation for something that isn't correct, but who cares, anyway. (If you know German, have a look at the Wikipedia article covering the topic.) -

Of course. It's cumbersome, though, and it can't be done w/o technical support from Fujifilm. -
Kaizen - Why Doesn't FUJI Add This Feature Enhancement....

The cameras are not that different. The X100T is just easier to use, with better performance and more convenient features. -

Sensor DR and Histogram DR (JPEG DR) are completely different things, so the light meter is perfectly okay to measure ± 3 zones. -

X100T Firmware Update

You can put that on a Fn button, at least with the more modern, better, state-of-the-art, cheaper X-T10. -

My emotions will soon turn to "angry" if Fuji doesn't update my X100T with the new AF system, eye detection etc. -

My camera only has 7 custom settings, and I know exactly what's in them. In case I forget, the Q menu immediately shows me. Labels to name different settings would be nice. Fuji knows about this, but they don't seem to care. Since custom settings are excluded from USB tethering, I doubt that it would be even possible to remote control them with the current SDK. -
"Future" may mean that I'm long dead when it happens. I'm happy with the color fixes we have now, because those bothered me more. Especially the blue sky halo issue.
