I've tried it, don't like it. You have go super-wide and often it errors if the camera isn't perfectly level during the sweep. I think to consistently use it, you need to use a tripod. And the resulting pan is reduced size and as you say, not a RAW file. When the C1 pan works, its much better. Unfortunately, it a "when" situation.

Hey all, I love stitching photos to get big wide views. I'm using Capture One and seems to have ran into a known problem with it for panoramas. When the shots have lots of green and blue in them, the stitched panorama end up with crazy white balance and heavy blue/green tint. Its sometimes possible to tweak things back but often not completely. I say a known issue as I found it noted on Capture One's site but no fix given. I don't want to switch to Lightroom just for this function. Anybody using a stand alone stich software they like that is compatible with C1 Raw files? Thanks!

I've heard great things about the 16-55 but it is a porker, especially for hiking trips. You could have both the new 8mm and 16-80 for the same weight and similar cost. 16mm doesn't seem wide enough for hiking to me, my most used landscape lens is the 10-24.

Fuji 16-55 mm f2.8 vs 35mm f1.4 and 16mm f2.8 and 10-24 mm f
SGinNorcal replied to chanta_sun's topic in Fuji X Lenses
Well, I believe the 16-55 and 50-140 were developed to match up with each other covering a large, useful focal range. But 16mm is not wide enough for landscape in many cases for me, and 140 is not that long. The 10-24 really shines in the wide end. But I am almost exclusively shooting landscapes so your mileage may vary. Those that crave detail usually aren't happy with the 10-24. There may also be better choices for astro but I would only be repeating what I have read. Research is great, but you might find that your needs might be more clearly in focus (pun intended) once you start shooting with the XT4. It certainly did for me, I started with zooms but find shooting with primes is really fun. The great part of purchasing used lenses is that if you don't end up liking them, you can resell and only be out some shipping. I would say the closest thing to a guarantee as lenses to suit all is the 23, 35 and 50mm F2's. They are cheap and easy to find used, optically awesome, durable, tiny, and useful in many scenarios. They are plenty fast enough for portraits unless you really got to have pro level bokeh, all the time. I would recommend grabbing one of those along with your zoom of choice then going from there. -
Image Stabilization stops : a marketing hype ?
SGinNorcal replied to Sandro_gsp's topic in Fuji X-T4
I guess I'm willing to let it go. I assume there is some scenario where what they claim is possible. Like mpg rating for a car or the 2 person tent. I do find stabilization to be really helpful and find it pretty reliable to push the rule of thumb to half of the focal length and still get a clear photo. -
Image Stabilization stops : a marketing hype ?
SGinNorcal replied to Sandro_gsp's topic in Fuji X-T4
You mean the Marketing people were stretching the truth? Inconceivable! From this Fuji article: https://fujifilm-x.com/en-us/exposure-center/image-stabilization-explained/ The OIS systems in XF and XC lenses offer varying levels of image stabilization. Some lenses, such as the aforementioned XF50-140mmF2.8 lens, offer up to five stops of compensation, while others offer less than this. But it’s down to the individual photographer to ascertain how much compensation they can actually achieve. -
I don't there is an answer for this question that works for all. Either are good multi-purpose lenses and aren't miles apart. You could look for a good, used example and give it a try. Or buy both used and resell the one you don't like as well.

Ultra-Wide Angle Fujinon XF8mmF3.5 R WR
SGinNorcal replied to FX Admin's topic in Fuji X Rumors & News
The 7mm design patent might have been written to protect a feature of the 8mm patent and they have no intent to make a 7mm version. Not sure if this happens in the lens world but it probably does to avoid another company making a slight change as a patent work-around. Yes, it is nice that Fuji is filling out the family of lenses. Now that the roadmap is complete, I wonder what's next? -
Ultra-Wide Angle Fujinon XF8mmF3.5 R WR
SGinNorcal replied to FX Admin's topic in Fuji X Rumors & News
That's probably true and probably why the price is a bit higher than other small Fuji primes. Its going to take longer to recoup development cost than a 35, 50mm or other really common, multi-use focal lengths. -
Ultra-Wide Angle Fujinon XF8mmF3.5 R WR
SGinNorcal replied to FX Admin's topic in Fuji X Rumors & News
I have not yet ordered it but doing so is probably inevitable. Maybe you guys will say its crap and save me some money! I love the 10-12mm range on the 10-24 so pretty curious about this lens. I've heard some complaints about the f3.5 but I rarely have my 10-24 at f4 so I doubt it will be an issue. Although double duty as an Astro lens would have been nice. -
Guess the list price on the Fuji XF 8mm F3.5 lens?
SGinNorcal replied to Astigmatism's topic in Fuji X Lenses
Its leaked at $799. Its probably going to be a low volume, specialty lens for Fuji and they don't expect to sell lots of them. -
PRICE LEAKED for Fujifilm X-S20 and XF8mmF3.5

Looking forward to hearing more about the 8mm. -
Camera takes photos BY ITSELF, and other weird behaviours.
SGinNorcal replied to Valve's topic in Fuji X-T5 / Fuji X-T50
I expect that like most warranties, Fuji's gives them the option to repair or replace at their option. -

I'm sorry to hear of your experience. But do you really think Fuji or any other company has some priority list where those that bought direct are treated better? That's a pretty slippery slope. And why wouldn't you want your camera repaired? When your car gets a warranty repair, do you expect a new one? Pretty much any company only replaces an item when the repair costs more than replacement. The QA on a repair likely exceeds the original anyway. With reference to Amazon, I've not shared the positives people seem to heap on it. Often these days, return shipping is on you. I currently have a chair I'm reselling because returning it to the manufacturer costs early as much as the original price. Amazon was only helpful to the point they pointed out return shipping was on me. They took a cut of the sale and did nothing about the items misrepresentation. I truly believe that more people should cut Amazon out, leaving more profit for the manufacturer, making a healthier company with better wages and staying power. Amazon is just another layer of profit taking fueled by our desire for convenience. -
As a longer term follow-up to my post, I really like the 2nd copy of this lens I purchased. It appears that the first one was de-centered. The 2nd, a WR version, has become one of my favorite lenses. Especially at the wide end, it gets a perspective that I really love for shooting landscapes.

Exposure Preview randomly stopped working
SGinNorcal replied to jake774's topic in Fuji X-T5 / Fuji X-T50
Are you talking about the vertical bar that shows where your exposure compensation is set? That graph displays whatever you have set on the exposure compensation dial and has nothing to do with the automated exposure of the camera. If you are using manual settings that lead to over exposure, that is still going to happen if you dial down the exposure comp dial. Its more of a fine tuning adjustment. -
Don't own and haven't used the 16mm. But I wouldn't take to much stock in "the list". The only two I have on it are the 33f1.4 and 23f2 and they do produce sharp images. I also have the 10-24, 16-80, 55-200 and they are excellent lens as well. Also, while the 18mm1.4 prime is on there, the 18-55 is not and most people find the 16-80 to have equal or better detail than the 18-55. Its usually safe to assume that a compact zoom is going to have slightly lower IQ at the same focal length as a prime. I haven't seen anything the disrupts that simplification. For me the bulky zooms, 16-55 and 50-140 don't fit the form factor I am after and I'm not going to lug them around so I don't have them. The compact zooms fulfill a need when you know you will be shooting with a variety of focal lengths or simply don't know what to prepare for and don't want to be constantly swapping lenses. In my case, the 10-24 is the most extreme example. If I pixel peep, its not that impressive. But shoot a beautiful wide scene at 10 to 12mm and it can provide an awesome shot you wouldn't get with a more general purpose lens. Maybe find a used f2 lens with the 18-55 range that suits you and play around with it. You will see what I am referring too. Picking a lens is always a compromise.

Cool shot. I'm curious, at the time, could you see the stars with your eyes or is this a case where the camera was willing to stare into bright light where your eye would not. I wonder if it would have been possible using an ND filter of similar to slow the shutter speed low enough to get star tracers.

What was months in planning and prep came to fruition.
SGinNorcal replied to Edp's topic in Fuji X-T5 / Fuji X-T50
Beautiful stuff, I really happy to see what my camera is capable of in expert hands. Excellent detail without being clinical. What other lenses than the Viltrox? -
I have the 33f1.4 and like it very much. I also like the little f2's, I have the 23mm. My logic was the 23 is most likely to be used outside in good light where the 33mm would double up as a portrait lens indoors or other potentially poor light uses. I don't plan to use this FL in my hiking kit so the larger size isn't a concern. I don't have and haven't used the 35f1.4 and have heard about its "character". But to me the 33 is an ideal blend of IQ w/o being clinical, awesome light capture, and great color rendering. I don't really notice AF which I guess is a compliment to not think of it. I recently had the 33 on and took some wide open shots of plum blossoms to see the bokeh. Pretty awesome results IMO with stunning details corner to corner. I may also end up with the 35f2 for size reasons but can't see parting with the 33.

I believe you are correct. The new one has no issues and I like it very much. It still doesn't match a prime for ultimate detail but I think this lens strength is the ability to capture a wide angle scene. For that function it works very well.
-
I think it depends on what and where you are traveling and what you plan to photograph. I have the 10-24, 16-80, and 33f1.4. For straight up image quality, the 33mm is in another league, I'm blown away by it. But when I'm hiking and shooting landscape, I really like the 10-24. When the shot is about the scene rather than the details, its really nice. I feel like the 16-80 is similar in optical quality to the 10-24 maybe slightly better. I bought it as an all-around lens for traveling in cities and mixed use when a larger range of focal length is nice. I don't like changing lenses on the fly so I put one on for the day and usually leave it. I like the 16-80 more than most it seems and it is more versatile than the 10-24 unless you are shooting large scale landscape. The 16-55 is maybe the best of both worlds but too bulky for me.

I'm four months in and love my X-T5, no problems at all. For me it came down to format choice, APSC. The brand choice became Sony or Fuji as Canon lens selection seems lacking. Then read up strengths and weaknesses of the two. But physically looking at the camera made the difference. I have XL hands and the Sony actually felt too small to hold. I preferred Fuji handling but the big difference was the dials. I could see how to adjust ISO, aperture, and shutter speed without instruction. Took me back to days of shooting film. I just wanted to use it. I don't like wading through menus and I don't have to with this camera. It has a ton of features I haven't used but I appreciate that I can go out and have fun, taking great stills, and learning the advanced stuff at a very slow pace. I've only shot a couple videos and have no idea what to do with the histogram. I'm not sure I care, love the camera. As for 4 vs. 5, that's hard to say. I don't want to video of myself so I prefer the tilt screen on the 5. The resolution increase isn't a bad thing, I trim my shots quite of bit and more res helps with that. I kinda wanted the latest and hopefully greatest. But if the dollar savings is enough to help out your lens budget then go for it.

As a follow-up, I just purchased a new version of the 10-24 and it has none of the issues I found on the older version. I know they are supposed to be the same optically but between these two copies, the new version is better.

Thanks guys, I've attached a heavily cropped version of the file to show what I mean. The left side of the shot is blurry where the left is sharp to the edges. On left, there are things closer and further than the building on the right and both still sharp. This was common over several photos. So not really soft edges but a whole soft right side. I read through Dennis's blog post and I think I'm convinced to purchase a new version of this lens. Actually, even the original photos are better than those I was getting from the copy I was using. If I can get similar results to those, I'll be really happy. I love the ultra width this lens has, what epic expanses! I really appreciate the discussion. Have a great day.
