Hello, is there a way to rate images in camera.. so when I import into Lightroom or Capture One they're already starred?

Long story,

The photographer I work with uses Fuji, but there are "key shots" that only he and the client knows about, images they like.

If these images are so key I should be able to spot them in the culling process, but the photographer wants to sit down and go through the images and say this one, that one, etc. Effectively wasting my time as I'm just the retoucher, and these images I'm talking about are just party shots, corporate events, etc.

So in order to simplify the selection process, I wanted to suggest the photographer sets a rating on images that are important, by pressing a custom button it would 5 star the image.

That way I wouldn't have to waste time, I could copy the files and deliver when I'm done.

Tldr;

Is it possible to rate images in camera and assign a custom button?

It depends on the camera and the firmware level.

Most Fuji X series cameras have had the ability to rate images in Playback mode but before firmware version 4.00 in the X-T3 the rating was stored in a Fujifilm specific area of the metadata and not visible to tools such as Lightroom.

That has changed and now the most recent cameras (and X-T3 post firmware 4.00) store the rating as XML which is much more widely accessible by viewing and editing programs.

When in Playback mode there is a shortcut to the rating screen by pressing AE-L. Its not exactly a custom button to set a specific star rating but its close.

    • The Laowa 65mm is a solid choice for product work; it's sharp, has minimal distortion, and offers excellent close focus. If you ever decide you want AF down the line, the Fuji 80mm f/2.8 is excellent but a lot pricier. For your budget and needs, I recommend the Laowa.
    • That sounds frustrating, especially after sticking with it since launch. Have you tried the latest firmware updates? I’ve seen a few XT5 owners say it helped with shutdowns and AF quirks, though low-light still seems to be a weak spot.
    • I've got a problem with my X100VI. Even if I change the name of the Bluetooth and try to pair it still comes up with please delete X100VI on the smartphone and when I go to unpair it and start the pairing procedure gain it tells me to do the same thing again it never seems to get rid of the name X100V. This is only happening with my oppo phone and there doesn't seem to be a problem with my other Android device or my iPad. Have been on to FF Australia and ever since they did an update to the latest firmware I just can't pair. It's a real joke
    • Thanks, my friend, you are kind as always, even though you didn't see my Edinburgh collection yet. I am afraid my post is not helpful to those who have the issues and I do not want to argue with them, I am just genuinely baffled why they have so many problems. Maybe my style of work is slower, taking more careful and deliberate shots. I do not need eye tracking and subject tracking that much, I don't do action often. I am used to focusing old-timer style. All my Fuji gear has worked perfectly ever since my X-T10, except once I had my (then new) 90mm f2 replaced by a better copy, which Fuji did in a very prompt and helpful manner. Before Fuji I had Canon full frame. I was so thrilled by the image quality of the X-T10, that I switched completely to Fuji and I am very happy still. Thank you, Fuji, for many happy moments.
