Easy flash question

I'm not usually much of a flash user, but last night, Christmas night, I was taking family photos and because it was so dim, I stuck that little flash that came with the X-t1 on to the camera. What I found was that i would get a preliminary flash and then like a second and a half later, the image was taken with flash again. Needless to day, with children in the mix, pretty much nothing came out like I saw it. I'm guessing I have some setting wrong, but not sure what. Suggestions?

Check for the Red Eye setting.  Red Eye setting will pre-flash to close the pupils which reduces the chance of reflected red eye.  

 

Could be focus assist too, but my money is on Red eye.

Perhaps it's just the TTL metering pre-flash you are seeing?

 

I'm not sure about your flashgun, but my Nissin uses a pre-flash when used in auto mode to set the aperture. This needs to be switched off when using a slave flash to prevent it setting off the slave unit too soon (or some slave units can be set to fire on the second flash).

 

I may have got this wrong as I rarely use TTL flash, but try manual or Commander mode?

 

I can't see the first flash in practice with mine but perhaps you have faster eyesight?

(at least from my previous experience which I admit is minimal). As near as I can tell, there are no TTL or manual options for this little flash, As a matter of fact the only options I can find are red eye reduction and commander mode.

I just tested the little EF-X8 flash on the X-T1 and it only behaves as you describe when RED EYE REMOVAL is ON (note that red-eye removal only works if FACE DETECTION under AUTOFOCUS SETTING is also ON).

Anyway, at page 37 of the X-T1 manual, on reads: "Except in commander mode, the flash may fire several times with each shot. Do not move the camera until shooting is complete."

 

What really intrigued me is that you're saying you can only find the flash modes red eye reducion and commander. In first place, if you're seeing RED EYE REDUCTION in FLASH MODE menu, it means that RED EYE REMOVAL is ON,

and FACE DETECTION is also ON!

 

In second place, in any shooting mode I see in FLASH MODE menu the options FORCED FLASH, 2ND CURTAIN SYNC, COMMANDER and SUPRESSED FLASH; under aperture-priority shooting mode, there is also SLOW SYNC (or

RED EYE & SLOW) option available; when the shutter-speed and aperture are in "A" (P mode), AUTO (or RED EYE REDUCTION) option is also available, exactly as you can read in the manual at page 133. I hope this helps!

I apologise. Can you confirm a few things to try and troubleshoot your issue? When you experienced the preflash at your family party did you have face detection on or off. If it was on, when you turn it off do you experience the same delayed preflash?

      All three of my bodies (X-E2, X-T4, GFX100S II) have shoot without lenses enabled and they have all had it set since I bought them.  No harm in it at all. Just remember to set the focal length when you fit a manual lens with no electronics otherwise the IBIS (if you have it) goes nuts. I regularly use vintage film lenses from Minolta, Zeiss, Mamiya, Rollei and others on my X mounts along with more modern manual focus stuff from TTArtisans. I also use Nikon AF-S lenses with a Fringer so the world is your oyster! Vintage lenses can be an absolute bargain too - For example the Zeiss 135 f/35 in M42 is as cheap as chips and very sharp as is the excellent Minolta 35-70 Macro (which is also rebadged Leica).

      I'm not exaggerating when I say that I have searched with great vigor (and at great expense) for a way to capture IR images with a Fujifilm camera for which I didn't have to use major amounts of sharpening to bring out the best. Zooms, primes, Fuji, Tamron, Viltrox, Sigma, Zeiss ... probably 20 lenses all told. Plus multiple IR converted Fuji cameras, X-T1, X-T3, X-T5. I even tried different ways of filtering IR, such as using the Kolari clip-ins and lens-mounted front filters. I was ready to give up until I almost accidentally tried one of the cheapest lenses out there -- the little TTArtisan 27mm F2.8. No hotspots that I could see, and best of all ABSOLUTELY SUPERB SHARPNESS across the entire frame. It's this attribute that I search for, and until now, never achieved. In my prior attempts, I listened to the advice from the "pundits", picking up a copy of the venerable Fuji 14mm F2.8, the Zeiss Touitt 12mm F2.8, Fuji 23 and 35mm F2.0, even the very similar 7Artisans 27mm F2.8, and none of them come even close to the TTArtisan for edge sharpness in infrared. Incidentally, I'm using a Kolari 720nm clip-in filter. Sure the TT has its issues -- vignetting at 2.8, tendency to flare with sunlight nearby, but all in all, this lens is glued to my X-T5 for now. This image was taken hand-held with this lens -- completely unedited!

      Screen is flipped with fan001

      Hy there When Im using the fan001 on the XH2s and I flip the LCD Screen vertically by 180 degrees then the image flips vertically, what is good but it also flips horizontally. The clean feed on HDMI is not flipping horizontally but its also flipping if the HDMI output info display is on. When I unmount the fan then the image flips only vertically. My firmware is updated to the latest version. Any ideas if there is a fix for that?
