I inadvertently put an SD card in my camera which already had some 24MP Nikon images on it. They can be displayed on the screen but very pixellated as if they were blown up from about 4MP, despite being larger than the X-Pro 1's own images. Secondly, they are displayed with a small icon which looks like a Christmas present with a ribbon and bow.

Can anybody explain these mysterious phenomena?

It's normal for an image taken with a different camera (especially with a higher megapixel count) for the images to be pixelated. The X-Pro1 is expecting 16MP images and it's processor and LCD are unable to correctly display the larger image size.

The 'present' icon is advising you that the image the camera is displaying was not taken with that particular camera. (It's a 'gift' from another camera).
