I take a picture. That picture is now locked on both the viewfinder and the LCD. Locked like a Ferrari is fast. At the bottom of both finders are three choices: Next, Retry, Exit. The Next selection (OK button) gives me a double exposure. Both Retry (Left Arrow) and Exit (Back) unlock the image. I'm back to normal viewing. Everything is peachy.

But I can't push the Back every time a take a picture. I've been through the menus over and over and I can't find the cause of this behavior. The reset button is looming in the distance. But I don't want to go there. It's an awful place. Can anyone help? Please? You'll have my undying gratitude, whatever that's worth.

It sounds like you have the option for shooting multiple exposures turned on.

This is turned on / off in the Drive menu setting or the Drive dial setting:

(you did not mention which camera you have).
