Film Simulation Custom Settings

OK, I have a complete noobie question (X100F). When I’m making changes to a custom film simulation attribute like SHADOW and I go in the plus (+) direction, am I lightening the shadows or am I increasing (deepening) shadows?

Plus adds more of whatever you are adjusting and minus reduces whatever you are adjusting.

+ shadows adds deeper shadows, + highlights adds brighter highlights 

- shadows lightens shadows, - highlights darkens highlights

Thank you very much for the clarification. I'm trying to develop a look (in small steps) to my photos that I find pleasing and wanted to be sure I was making adjustments in the direction I intended. Subtle changes are not always immediately observable.
