Back focusing button X-E1 ??

I was reading an article in AP regarding rear focusing and the X-T1:

It mentions rear focusing via a button on the rear so that the shutter release is just for that but I've tried it on the X-E1 and cannot get it to work?

 

Am I doing it all wrong or can the X-E1 be used with a dedicated rear focusing button for street work ??

Do you have your focus set to manual?

I just put my x-e2 on manual focus and just press the AF-L button to focus.

Set to manual focus, my X-E1 does this trick, but the AF box does not light up in green to confirm focus. Seems to work fine otherwise. Good to know!

I tried it for a bit but found it much slower to focus on the x-e1. Might have been in my head though?
