Hi All,

In my quest to improve my skills and reduce my reliance on Lightroom I hope you can help me with something.  My goal is to produce photos I'm reasonably happy with directly from the camera's jpegs.  To that end, I wonder if the following tone curve adjustment is something I can achieve using some combination of the in camera settings.  Below I've shown a before and after adjustment that I sometimes make in Lightroom.  Basically, I'm forcing the blacks to be brighter.  I'm aware of the shadow and highlight adjustments but they seem to adjust different points on the tone curve.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

There's no in-camera curve tool and I don't personally think it's necessary. Giving the info I have of what you want, I would try the following settings:

  • +1 stop (or more) exposure compensation
  • -1 (or -2) Shadow adjustment
  • -1 (or -2) highlight adjustment for saving the highlight depending of the scene contrast
