I’m not sure about single shot focus, but in servo mode with Pre-AF On enabled, the camera focuses constantly, even if you have not activated the focus system with the shutter button or a back button. Does this mean you never have to activate the focusing with the back button or shutter button? And if the answer is no, you still should hit something to activate the focus, what does that do that is not already being done by the Pre-AF On setting?

You won’t get subject tracking with pre-af until you half press the shutter button

No, that is exactly what the pre-af setting does—the camera focuses constantly.
