Digital stills cameras generally have a 29m 59s limit imposed on their video recording capability. This isn't a technical limit but a tax limit. If the camera were allowed to take videos longer than 30m then the camera would be classed as a video camera and would be liable for a higher rate of tax on its retail price. Most manufacturers avoid the tax by limiting the recording to just under the 30m threshold.

See page 324 of the manual, it tells you there that you can't record longer than 30m. Although it doesn't take the trouble to explain why.

Ya, this is a valid question that seems to hit the forums every now and again.  To use the still camera as a video camera (say record a concert that is 60min long) ... it's the wrong tool.  A proper video camera is required.  But to use the still camera as a video camera ... it works great, just have to work with its limits.  I've done that a couple of times.  For example, during a pause in the show do a quick stop and start recording to reset the 30min limit.  Of course it requires minor work in post to put back together, but it's a work around.

If you watch most movies there are very few, if any, takes longer than a few minutes. Most professional movies have many short clips pieced together.

It's mostly amateur movies with their interminable long sequences showing travelogues, their children's nativity play, or concert goers recording the act instead of watching and listening, which require 30 minutes or longer :)

Dear All,

My question was: how many mins not consecutive I can record in a 64gb card. If I change from 4K/30fps to FullHD/30fps the record time available doesn't change and it seems strange because the 4K files are bigger than FullHD files.

I wish you all Marry Christmas.

Thank you, glad to have (not) helped.

Out of interest what is the record time that is showing and not changing?

BTW - can someone tell me how X-T2 writes down the recording? Is it a single file or a number of files? I'm asking because I have discovered that mine writes a number of 5-minute files regardless if I set 4K or FHD. I wonder if this is normal or I do something wrong?
