X-T2 not seeing external mic

I've just acquired a Boya BY-MM1+ mic, but my X-T2 (firmware 4.40) isn't seeing it.  I'm using the supplied TRS cable (there's also a TRRS for use with a phone which works), but so far no joy.

Are there any in camera settings that need changing?  Raking through various guides some show a microphone menu, but I'm not seeing that (also the guides don't specify which camera it's for).  Most sources say bus power can be supplied for this type of small shotgun mic, but others are saying only mics with dedicated power will work, so which is it?

Any advice and help greatly appreciated!
