Warning - Continuous focus with ES or MS + ES mode

I noticed a strange thing happening earlier. It's not a fault, as it's mentioned in the fine print of the Firmware updates, but it's counter intuitive in a way, so I thought I should warn you guys.

 

The problem is with Continuous focus. What I have noticed is that continuous focus does not work as normal when the shutter mode is set to ES or MS + ES mode. If the camera is in CH or CL, instead of refocussing for each shot, the focus remains locked throughout the burst. So if your subject is moving towards or away from you, only the first shot is in focus. This happens even if the mechanical shutter is being used in MS + ES mode. Not sure why they wrote the firmware this way!

 

So if you're a wedding shooter using ES during the ceremony to keep quiet, make sure to switch back into MS for the aisle shots.

Hmm. I have not experienced this. It tracks subjects for me. When shutter is less than 1/40000

Here's the firmware notes (version 3, the later updates do not change this as far as I can see). If your camera isn't doing this I can't think why. 

 

*Some functions are restricted when the"ELECTRONIC SHUTTER" or "MECHANICAL+ELECTRONIC" is selected.

• The shutter speed and sensitivity are restricted to values of 1/32000-1 sec and ISO 6400-200 respectively.
• Regardless of the option selected, the mechanical shutter is used for motion panoramas.
• In the burst mode, focus and exposure are fixed at the values for the first shot in each burst.
• In the range where the electronic shutter works, the long exposure noise reduction doesn't work.
• When the "ES ELECTRONIC SHUTTER" is selected, the FLASH MODE is fixed to the "SUPPRESSED FLASH".
• When the "MS MECHANICAL+ES ELECTRONIC" is selected, the mechanical shutter is automatically selected for a TTL flash to fire if flash firing is required. With a non-TTL flash, the flash doesn't fire in the mode. So use the flash in the "MS MECHANICAL SHUTTER" mode.

Firmware 4 displays a warning if you set the camera to CL or CH with ES (or MS+MS) and AF-C.

I haven't seen firmware 4, but I have an X-T10, so...same same, but different.
