Focal reducers?

I recently started reading about focal reducers and it sounds like an interesting concept. But I can't find any information about when it can be used and when not and what the drawbacks are. In particular I wonder about:

- Does the lens have to be a full frame or can you use an APS-C lense?

- Could you make the Fuji 10-24 into a super super wide angle 2.8 lens?

Does anybody have a link to an article that explains the basics or can explain here? The adapters I have found a re a little too expensive to just try out.

focal reducers, as you call them, are meant to adapt old lenses on cameras with a sensor smaller than 24mm x 36mm so that there is no magnification used on a smaller format compared to their original one when used on a larger format

They gain you also a stop.

They don’t work with all lenses because a lens protruding too much inside will touch the optical elements which they contain.

You cannot use it to make a fuji lens wider than it is.

just google  the words focal reducer and fujifilm X, you will find plenty of information

Thanks for clarifying. There is a lot of information on the web but none as concise as your response :-)
