First impressions with the XH1

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

(Hmm, somehow I thought the photos would show up with the text...)

Received my XH1 today. I am still going trough that phase where one holds it as Gollum holds his precious... so I won't be criticizing it much (and given the paid price, I'll probably be in denial about some of its faults for a while...)

So, it is bigger, but not that much either. Same for the weight (without grip, but I think I'll add a base plate, my pinkie still lacks some proper resting space).

For once, my first photo made with it is not of my feet, a plant, or bookshelves.

I had to process it using their raw file converter which I really don't like. Waiting on LR and Iridient. But now that at least it has the camera film simulations in it, it is usable.  I find the in camera settings are (as with previous models) slightly different, so my usual settings didn't yield the results I usually get. Though it was pretty cloudy and flat, not great for BW.

and the basic raw conversion

I also tried the panorama function (I some times use it prior to making a stitched panorama, so I have a good reference). Auto-stitching errors were few and discrete

Being alone, I took the opportunity to test the remote app. It worked fine, but it was a lot less smooth than with my other fuji cameras (maybe it was a problem with the phone). Less smooth is me in the grips of denial. It was super laggy. , I need to test more

I then took another photo through the window, because street lights were now on (and the tower's). I then noticed the shutter speed was dropping a lot, so I tested the IS
with the 16-55. 1/12th sec

That made me ambitious and I tried the 90mm. 1/8thsec

That was the lowest speed I managed handheld. I need to work on the proper technique, it has been sometime I didn't tried this handheld.
1/8th and 1/12th sec photos seem more than acceptable to me. Not all were good of course, I'd say 3 out of 7. At 1/30th sec they were all good.
Strangely enough between 1/15th and 1/20th sec I only got blurred photos. I was really surprised to have more sharp shots at a lower speed. It is possible that I was just in a better stance and less movements. I wonder if keeping it half pressed for a bit before shooting also helped a little (so the system can better compensate for movements ? I don't know, but 1/8th usable photo clearly IBIS also works fine).

All in all, satisfied. Big user manual to read ahead of me, and a lot of video features to get familiar with.

(I filmed a little bit, to my eyes it was marvelous, but keep in mind till then my reference were cell phone videos... so my amazement is of little use for others)

    • So I ended up getting and X-H2 over the X-T5 because of a good deal that came up.  Needing to buy a card, I needed to figure out,  what is the real impact of a card's speed for photos?   In particular, I'm going to test how shooting at 15 FPS will differ between: Angelbird - AV PRO CFexpress B SE - 512 GB and Angelbird AV PRO CFexpress SX - 160 GB. How many shots can I get off before buffer fills, and how long does it take for the buffer to clear?    MOP: X-H2 Factory rest, card formated, no lens (body cap on), performance boost on, manual exposure, mechanical SS @ 1/8000, IS off, Shoting RAW Compressed Lossless with only one card in. Held shutter release till buffer filled, and used stop watch to see how long for buffer to clear. Subtracted two frames from total taken as that's how long it takes me to release the trigger once the buffer is full. Repeat 2x for sanity check.   ***TEST RESULTS***   ~~~64GB Lexar Pro SD 150MB/s~~~ 75 shots to fill buffer, 36 Seconds to clear it   ~~~Angelbird AV Pro SX 160GB~~~ 251 shots to fill buffer, 5 Seconds to clear it   .~~~Angelbird AV Pro SE 512GB~~~ 232 shots to fill buffer, 4 Seconds to clear it     ***Conculsion***   If burst shooting an X-H2 at 15 FPS is your thing, buy the Anglebird 512GB SE for the same price as the 160GB SX.   Below is a shot on X-T2 w/ the Fuji 70-300. I manged to fluke it off with a dead battery by turning the camera off and on again, and squeezing three more shots out (this was the last shot).   Ta for now!

    • Xt5 firmware updated and now cannot see pics taken on lcd when pressing playback. Any ideas please? Elie
    • Have you tried a factory reset? Maybe you changed unintentionally a setting?
    • Hello. I have a x-s10 that I use multiple lenses with. Yesterday I noticed that with the Fujinon 16mm lens I'm having issues auto-focusing. It works on video but not for still images. When I half press the button it focuses a bit then when I release the button it snaps back to the previous focus point. Even though it manages to focus the image is still blurry. Any ideas please. I already did a a major google search and nobody has mentioned this issue. Thanks, Etienne
